Round 2 Preview

Round 2 of the Champion of Champions State Knock Out competition this Sunday 21st September,
has 5 Holiday Coast teams progressing, while 3 were eliminated last week.

Fortunately for our players and soccer fans locally, Round 2 is again being played on the Holiday Coast.

Korora under 11's and Woolgoolga under 15's play teams from the Far North Coast at Korora, while Boambee
under 16's, Coffs United Men and Boambee Women, play sides from Granville at Ray Marshall Reserve.

These games promise to be a great spectacle of top level soccer, while all teams are expected to be tested, all
have already proven they can compete with the best in the state successfully and are again expected to do
well this weekend. Far North Coast sides are traditionally very strong teams and historically have been the
bench mark competition wise at representative level in the region. They would still have you believe this, but
recent Northern Youth League Success proves that Holiday Coast has eroded that urban myth and is set to
create its own legend. This should be a fiercely competitive local derby.

Granville is also a very strong association traditionally and is the region where current Socceroos and English
Premier League superstar Harry Kewell hails, coming from the Smithfield club. So do yourself a favour and come
out and support our sides this Sunday and provide the crowd support that gives teams that old home ground
advantage, as the visiting teams will certainly have a band of loyal supporters with them.

Round 1 Match Reports

All Age Men
The Holiday Coast Champions Coffs City United overrun the Eastern Suburbs Champions Heffron Hawks 6:0 on
the weekend with a ruthless display of lightning fast attacking, backed up with good defence and calm position
football in the middle of the park.

Right from the start the Lions made their intention clear with Ben Mackay and Nick Lambert skinning their
markers and getting to the by-line and either just missing themselves or having the cut backs narrowly missed.
The chances kept coming and it seemed just a matter of time before the Lions scored. With about five minutes
to go in the first half, the Lions had a setback when Dion Ball injured his knee in a challenge with the
goalkeeper and had to be substituted. Andrew Want came on and moved into defence pushing Chris Werrell up
to midfield. Then the Lions were given a bit of a scare when a Hawks player met a high cross at the far post
and it took a good save from Stewart Cook to keep the ball out. The Lions finally broke the deadlock with a
stunning individual goal from Ben Mackay. He collected the ball on the halfway line accelerated past his
defender as if he wasn't there, got to the by-line cut back in himself and riffled a right foot shot past the
keeper. Almost from the restart Ben was put through again, he left the defenders in his wake and rounded the
keeper who brought him down inside the box. The keeper was lucky to get away with just a yellow card and
Ben took the kick himself scoring to make it 2:0 at half time.

The third goal was a classic, a long throw down the line found Chris Werrell who in turn found Ben Mackay,
who slipped the ball on to Nick Lambert who smashed the ball into the net without a Hawks player ever looking
like getting close to the ball. Tyson Barry then came on for Tapps Dintwa who had a fantastic game on the
right defending and pushing forward well. Nick got his second shortly after when the keeper couldn't hold a
fierce shot from Nathan Hansford and he buried the rebound. The next goal was similar in the fact that the
keeper saved well from the initial shot, but a Lions player calmly put away the rebound. In this case it was
a fine shot after a great run by substitute Grice Reid that was blocked and Pete Bayndrian slotted home the
rebound. Both Nick and Ben were unlucky not to get their hat tricks and Tyson Barry was also very unlucky
not to get a goal, hitting the woodwork and narrowly missing with a great chip. The scoring was completed
with another breakaway goal, Chris Werrell skipped through the defence calmly side stepped the keeper before
rolling the ball into the empty net.

The Lions looked good all over the park and were a class above the disappointing Eastern Suburbs
side who never looked like they were going to stretch the Lions.
- Report by Roy Miller

12 Year Boys
Boambee Bombers Champions of Champions tournament was unfortunately snuffed out by an aggressive and
physical Heffron Hawks team from the Eastern Suburbs.

In a game that started out promising for the Bombers when they went ahead early in the first half when a
goal mouth scuffle resulted in the ball crossing the line, momentum seemed to be with the home team. Several
other scoring opportunities were squandered in the first half which would prove to haunt the Boambee team.
Heffron, undefeated in the past 2 season then came back hard at the Bombers trying desperately to get an
equaliser. Unfortunately a dive of 'Olympic Proportions' inside the box gave them the opportunity to score,
which they converted. The intensity then lifted to a level the Bombers had not experienced before as the
Heffron side began to out muscle the locals, the physical aggressive nature of their play seemed to unsettle
the Boambee players which took them awhile to adjust to. The visitors who had the support of a dedicated and
parochial band of supporters began to lift their team and they responded by scoring another two unanswered
goals before half time.

Boambee, not believing a come back was out of the question, lifted themselves in the second half and tried
desperately to score early and put pressure back on the visitors. Unfortunately, strong defence and inaccurate
shooting conspired to deny the Bombers the goal they desperately needed to get back into the game. With a
better then even share of possession and field position in the second half, Boambee were unable to recover,
though they were on the attack when the final whistle blew, goals seemed to abandon the side who can be
proud of their effort and commitment.

The score did not reflect the closeness between the two teams and the boys felt on another day the result
could very well have been different.
