Football Silly Season

Whilst all may be quiet on the Football/Soccer fields at the moment there has never been so much activity off the park. A whole new organising body has to be found from President down to office cleaner, but that is a saga for another day.

What is of more interest to the punters and especially players is the musical chairs game of name a Coach for next season, with the possible scenario that not one of last year's incumbents from Champions to Promoted being the same in 07.

Two clubs that have however got themselves organised and appointed guiding lights for their Premier players are Northern Storm and Sawtell Scorpions.

After years of distinguished service at the helm of Sawtell, Ian Glover has accepted a new challenge north of town with the Storm. All coaching positions come with a "use by date", Ian has shown great character in appreciating this and leaves the Scorpions with nothing but their gratitude for a job well done and best wishes for the future.

This of course left vacant, because of the nature of the club and the plethora of young talent in the ranks, the "plum" coaching job in the league. Judging by the number and calibre of candidates that expressed interest this would certainly seem the case. However once a particular aspirant stepped forward the succession was never in doubt.

Mark Hayes has been a stalwart of the club for 25 years both on and off the field, a winner as both player, last time the Scorpions won the Premiership and highly successful coach of many junior grades and including Premierships with U17s and Reserve Grade.

Highly regarded by all current players, a smooth transition is ensured and what a squad he will inherit. Northern NSW representatives Danny Clements and Rory Goddard about to tour Malaysia are just the tip of the iceberg that has been added to by a recruiting campaign that has already born the fruit of two ex professional players from Canberra and the UK as well as being replenished by a yet again winning U17 team as well as the return of a few old faces.

Apart from additions of new faces, a major improvement to the scenery at Sawtell will be the installation of the best new lighting system in the League, matched only by the International Stadium and well up to the new standards required by O H and S regulations, something one wonders if other Clubs have budgeted for, if they wish to continue the trend of more night fixtures, not to mention training. Whilst on the subject of training the highly credentialled Scott Quarmby a has been appointed as Director of Coaching, guiding not only all grades of coaches but individual players as well.

A meet the new team BBQ has been arranged for Saturday 16th Dec, 12 to 4pm at the Sawtell Hotel. All are welcome including the Ladies, 3rd Grade as well as any new to town. Contact ph# 0437 304 964.

Gold Coast Panthers
claim over 35s Title

By BRAD GREENSHIELDS
Coffs Coast Advocate

THE bones and muscles of the combatants may be a bit sorer today but the Over 35s tournament proved to be a hit once again with the footballers who took to the International Stadium. In warm conditions the veterans of the game showed that speed may have proven to be only temporary but class lasts forever.

High standard football was played all weekend before the Gold Coast Panthers claimed the title with a 2-1 victory over The Johnnies. With only four minutes remaining in the final, the Panthers made the sealing strike to take an unassailable 2-0 lead before The Johnnies scored a very late consolation goal.

Auckland based team Waitemata NHK claimed the Shield 1-0 over Armidale while Bathurst 75 which was made up mainly of Sawtell players lost the Plate final 1-0 in extra time with both sides only having six men on the field each due to the drop-off rule which was used in added time.

NBN PL Grand Final Men Report

Urunga Raiders 2 Coffs City Utd Lions 2

(after extra time: Urunga won on penalties 9-8)

Last weekends events could almost begin with 'once upon a time' as Breton's brigade of Raiders made their way to the Coffs Harbour International Stadium but that would not do justice to both sides that have been the pre-eminent teams in the competition this past year.

With two wins apiece in the competition it was more of a showdown than a Grand Final but I tell you it will be forever etched into the hearts of all Raiders players and supporters as for the first time in the club's 26 year history they cheered on the maroon and whites to victory in not one but two grand finals, both at the expense of the Coffs Lions. Now Coffs have had plenty of finals experience cupboards full of silverware and a player squad list that would be the envy of most clubs but this was not to be one of their happier finals experiences.

The Reserve Grade grand final offered up a taste of what was in store as the sides took the field with a cool southerly blowing and a threat of wet weather on the way. The Raiders in the early stages strung together several passing moves that although looking promising resulted in shots on goal that didn't really trouble the Coffs defence.
It was a confidence boost for the Raiders who were soon to be tested as Coffs began to get into their stride and only good defending from Andrew Pettit and Matt 'I should be striker' Endemi kept the Lions at bay. Things began to look decidedly ominous for the Raiders as the Lions gained a greater than even share of the ball and after one failed attack Endemi's quickly struck clearance hit Pettit's arm. The Lions were duly awarded a penalty kick which they failed to convert.

It should have gone in perhaps it was the look of Raider's keeper Stuart Wallace or was it that demon of Grand Final pressure? It didn't matter though as the Lions were to score soon after when Glen Williams tossed a high ball into the Raiders penalty area for the mercurial Grice Reid to swoop on and deftly chip the advancing Wallace to make the score 1-0.

To make matters worse for the Raiders, Harry Gale had to be replaced by Damian Fuller as he experienced the rigors of returning after a 6 week break and Matiss Thiering replaced by Ben Dooley after he had expended too much energy in his u/17's grand final the night before.

The Raiders stuck to their game plan and even though they were stretched at times the efforts of Pat Myles and Jai Waddick were creating opportunities for the maroon and whites at the front. The score was levelled 5 minutes before the half time break after Myles burst out of defence and was fouled outside the Coffs penalty area. Andrew 'the white feather' Pettit took the ensuing free kick and found big Matt Endemi on the far post who was able to equalise with a well placed header. It had been mostly attack by the Lions and with that bit of luck the Raiders were able to go the break at 1-1 and knowing they had a strengthening breeze at their back in the second half.

Jacob Lancaster who had worked tirelessly at the front for the Raiders in the first stanza, was replaced by Toby Francis at the start of the second half. Now they say that Toby can get out of bed, turn out the light and get back in before it gets dark such is his speed - well Toby tormented the Lions tiring back three creating that much needed forward pressure for the Raiders and after Toby intercepted a mistimed Lion's pass, he was able to flick the ball on to Jackson Lindsay who neatly threaded a ball through to a rampaging Sam Ireland, his shot cannoned off the woodwork and into the net to make the Raiders 2-1 leaders with 30 minutes to go.

The Lion's stuck at their task and mounted wave after wave of attack and even though their commitment was undoubted they could not break the Raiders tight defence, probably on another day it would have been enough, but not this day. The Raiders had a hold of that lead like it was life itself and as the clock wound down ran out 2-1 winners.

Tremendous efforts by all the squad saw the Raiders take out the Reserve Grade Grand Final for the first time since 1993. It was an exciting match and was a fitting prelude to the main game that would eventually start at 8pm... yes it was a long day.

By the time the First Grade took the field the rain that had been threatening had arrived in gusts and swirls, this had the effect of concentrating the expectant crowd of about 2000 into the grandstand and made for albeit wet, an electric atmosphere.

It was a case of fasten your seat belts when Phil Payne blew time on as both sides that had been waiting for 1 hour in the sheds hit the ground running and mounted fast early attacking raids at both ends. It would be only superb last ditch defending by the Lions Peter Bayndrian that defused the first really promising raid by the Raiders, as Trevor Sparkes took possession of the ball and drove through the heart of the Coffs defence for goal, as Sparkes pulled the trigger Bayndrian put his body on the line and blocked the shot.

Exceptional piece of defending that was to be repeated soon after as Dion Ball released Ben Mackay who had his forward run terminated by the Raiders left back Bradd Danzey. It was uncompromising play that would repeated throughout the first half, stuff that only a Grand Final can extract from teams. The Lions were first to score though after Nathan Hansford did enough to make space on the right flank to fire in a cross that Nathan Silvey was able to head home from close range.

The Lions they roared here we go - they'd won the last two encounters against the Raiders, you could feel the self belief of the side grow with Silvey's strike. The Raiders were left to wonder what they had to do in the second half to get through these feline warriors.

The second half was equally as fierce with fast attack from both teams confirming the fact that the result of this match was definitely in the balance. The game turned in the Raiders favour after Lion's Brent Turner was sent off for a tackle of dubious intent on Kale Hopper. At ten men and 30 minutes left the Lions were to be given a thorough workover by the Raiders as they held the ball for longer periods of play and mounted wave after wave of attack.

The breakthrough that looked imminent came after Mick McCormick who been playing solidly for the Raiders at the back dispossessed Coff's Anthony Wiseman and fired out a ball to Jaxen 'the mailman' Heward who then passed on to Grant Homes. Homes was able to weave around Mick Smith whose desperate tackle felled Homes and a penalty kick was awarded.

Up stepped Raider's captain Trevor Sparkes who smacked in the equaliser. The largely pro Raider crowd went berserk! You might think that at ten men and 1-1 Coffs would lose their taste for the match. That was never in their plans as they surged back, brilliant fast attack from Nathan Hansford and Nick Lambert was causing the Raiders concern at the back and only laser like tackling from Dominc Kelly and Mick McCormick kept the Lions at bay. The match ended in normal time at 1-1.

Two 15 minute periods of extra time were now to played and in the first period of that Urunga looked to have the match sewn up after great work from Dominic Kelly saw him release Kale Hopper on the right flank. Hopper was able to feint his way around a tiring Mick Smith and drive in a shot that was too hot for David Craggs from 20metres. The largely pro Raider crowd were on their collective feet, surely that will do.

Coffs though were able to equalise in the second period of extra time after a fast break by Wiseman saw his pass to Silvey neatly deflected onto an unmarked Ben Mackay, his shot too good for the diving Raider's keeper Jakob Campbell. 2-2 was the final score and now for that deciding passage of any drawn final - the penalty shootout.
In a reflection of the match the first 5 penalties by both sides found the net, neither side willing to give ground. From that point on the first miss with the other side scoring would decide the result. It was not till the 8th kick by both sides that the result was to be confirmed as in a moment of sheer brilliance, Jakob Campbell who'd already almost saved a couple of penalty shots, stood off centre in the goal. Coff's Peter Bayndrian must have thought 'this is ok, I'll just smack it into that gaping hole'. Unfortunately for him his shot cannoned off the woodwork and Campbell's tactic worked.

So at 11pm (yes you read that right - 11pm) on Sunday 9th September the Raiders won their first First Grade Grand Final in 26 years - I have to say it was an epic game. As the Lion's left the field to lick their wounds the Raiders shed reverberated to the sounds of 'are we good, are we any bloody good...' Well boys this year you are the best!

Football is not over for the Raiders though as they now take part in the Champions of Champions competition the first round of which will be played at Urunga this weekend with Raiders up against Sydney's Barnsten FC. This match will be at 10:30 at the Morgo St complex on Sunday 17th, hope you can be there to cheer on the the Champions... go U Raiders!!

- Report by Tom Campbell
Urunga Raiders SC

Coffs City United Football Club wishes to congratulate Urunga Raiders on their initial NCF premiership win over the weekend. Coffs City were attempting to win their third sequence of 3 crowns in a row but this was not to be.

A final score of 2-2 and then 9-8 on penalties is amazing and football supporters should be impressed with the commitment and skill shown by both Urunga and Coffs City to achieve these levels.

Well done.

3rd Div North Grand Final Report

Westlawn Win Local Grand Final
On Saturday afternoon at Barnier Park, the undefeated Tucabia Bears and the Crown Hotel Westlawn Panthers fought it out for the North Coast Football third division north grand final title. The Bears had youth and speed on their side, but the Panthers had the experience part wrapped up with some players more than double the age of the Bears oldest.

It was a great day for football, the sun was shining but not too hot and the field was in superb condition after being closed the previous weekend due to the weather. A excellent crowd of about 200 in good spirits were in attendance after the junior grand final titles had been settled earlier that day.

The opening 15 minutes was a tight and fast battle with the football moving quickly to both ends of the park. About 15 minutes in the Panthers opened the scoring when Scott Butcher slipped a ball through to "Sneaky" Pete Taylor who was unmarked in the box and made no mistake, slipping the ball past the keeper for a 1-0 lead to Westlawn.

Both sides had their chances throughout the rest of the first half but the defensive lines held fast. Tucabia came out revived at the start of the second half with an opening blitz but were held out until they had a counter attacking opportunity which caught the Westlawn defence up too far. Despite a scrambling defensive effort from the Panthers, Brody Albiston was able to kick the ball across goal into the far corner of the net to bring the scores level with most of the second half still to play.

Westlawn were able to go one goal up again soon after however when Scott Butcher got a nice ball through to Mitch Ware who chipped the keeper from the edge of the box out wide and it went into the far side of the goal overseen by Peter Allen who was there to make sure of it for a 2-1 lead. Both sides had chances from there but the Panthers held on well for a deserved grand final win.

Westlawn Panthers Coach, John Pitkin, praised his team's effort and their big finish to the season throughout the finals series. He selected David Groth as his player of the match with his good runs and solid defence up the left flank. Keeper Chris Lawson was also a standout for the Panthers, rarely having to dive as he was positioning himself well throughout. The referees did their job well and had no undue influence on the outcome of the game while Tucabia's captain / coach, Daniel Gavin, had his usual stand out game for the Bears, always looking dangerous.

As minor premiers, the Tucabia Bears get to take on Corindi Red Rock Breakers in the Zone finals at Rushforth Park next Saturday at 1:30pm.

Urunga Raiders 1 Corindi Red Rock Breakers 2

The First Grade Preliminary Final was to be played between Urunga Raiders and Corindi Red Rock Breakers to decide which of the two teams was going to meet Coffs United Lionesses in the Grand Final.

Last week, Urunga went down to Coffs in the narrowest of margins in the major semi-final so this weeks was their second shot at the big one. Previous encounters between the Raiders and the Breakers have been tight as both teams are very strong and physical teams with an abundance of youth.

The game started with Urunga in control putting together attractive passages of play. Corindi were panicking in defence with any dangerous ball being cleared out or up the field. It wasn't long before Urunga had a chance when Belinda Moore picked up a ball in the middle and put it wide to Ashlee Mackie who's cross went across the face of goal but found no feet.

Corindi then made a dangerous run only to see a striker fall to the ground and an indirect free kick was given. In desperation, Urunga put 10 players on the goal line and prepared to charge the kicker. The kick was quickly taken and the shot hit the Urunga wall and was cleared, preventing goal. Urunga made a fast counter attack with Tjirra Francis making a break but her shot went over the crossbar.

Another fast attack was made by Ashlee on the left wing. She took the ball up the line, put in a cross that was missed by two Corindi defenders then volleyed sweetly into the back of the net by Tjirra.

A free kick was given to the Raiders 25 metres out from the Corindi goal for a handball but the kick was picked up by the goalkeeper although the pressure from three Urunga players would have capitalized on any mistake by her.

25 minutes into the match saw a one on one between Urunga keeper Morwenna Tunley and a Corindi striker with both players running at a through ball on the edge of the 18 yard box. Both made contact with the ball with a great save by the keeper followed by dramatic screaming from Morwenna as she lay on the ground injured. She was carted off and play eventually continued.

A Urunga handball just outside the box gave Corindi a free kick which was defended by Roxy Auld's head in the wall and then saved by fresh substitute keeper Jessica Snow with her first touch on the ball. Two more good saves by Jessica followed.

Corindi made a good passage of play up the line with a one-two and a cross to the middle where there were loads of purple shirts but the shot by the Corindi forward hit the crossbar. The goal kick was taken and the ball fell straight back into the Urunga goal box and this time the same forward made no mistake in converting, making the score even.

Corindi scored their second goal off a fast corner headed straight into the top of the net and the Urunga goalkeeper had no chance. The Breakers went into half time happy with a one goal lead.

A slow start was made to the second half with no real obvious possession or plays. A corner for Urunga was taken well by Crystal Halverson and the ball went straight across the face of the goal but Urunga didn't get a touch to it. Rachel Freeman was also playing well making great runs from stopper position all the way into the box often beating many players.

The second half was fairly non eventful for both teams with no more goals seeing the Breakers the winners by 1.

Congratulations to the Urunga first grade side on a good season.

Urunga Raiders 2 Sawtell Scorpions 0

Father's day saw the Sawtell Scorpions and Urunga Raiders go head to head in Reserve grade and First grade to see who would play Coffs Lions in the grand final next weekend.

In First grade the matches between the two clubs have been closely contested affairs, the last two matches ending in drawn results. To pump the Scorpions up though was their comfortable win over Woolgoolga Wolves 2-0 in the elimination Semi-Final with goals to Hayden Kelly and Tye O'Connor. The Raiders on the other hand were last start losers when Coffs Lions ran out 2 goal winners. The matches were played at the Coffs 'den' and in warm sunny conditions referee Bruce Mackie blew time on.

The start of this game was not to be missed as the Scorpions had first possession of the ball and quickly mounted an attacking raid when Luke France whipped in a cross that found Jake Glover's right boot; interesting attack, the Raiders quickly responded though and when Trevor Sparkes released Josh McGovern on the left with a well timed pass, McGovern slotted the chance to put the Raiders 1 up after 2 minutes. A good start to the match especially if you were in maroon and white - end to end stuff that had the large crowd enthralled.

The Scorpions though had plenty of ammunition to hurt the Raiders, Matt Parkins a constant threat and when he was felled in the penalty area by McGovern referee Mackie had little choice but to award a spot kick. In a match defining moment the Raider's keeper Jakob Campbell moved to his left with speed reminiscent of the legendary Andrew 'like a tiger' Nestor, Campbell's save held and the score remained at 1-0. This did two things deflated the Scorpions and put the thought in the Raiders minds that the Big Father was on their side today.

Freed from the constraints of a stopping role McGovern was like a dog in a butcher's shop out wide on the left and produced the Raiders second strike on 25 minutes after some great lead up work by Grant Homes when from a seeming impossible position, Homes was able to weave though two defenders to deliver the ball to McGovern, his right foot shot too good for a diving Sawtell keeper.

At two up the Raiders were in the box seat and at the break must have entertained thoughts of a grand final appearance. The 'boss' Breton made it clear though that games are not won at half time and the Scorpions would be trying everything to get back into this game.

The second half had more end to action with both sides trying to unlock each other. Urunga's back three of McCormick, Danzey and Heward were mostly able to deal with the attacking foray's Rory Goddard and Luke France, special mention should go to the Raider's youthful Dominic Kelly who played a demanding defensive role with poise and commitment surely a player that Breton has his eye on.

I digress back to the game and alas for Sawtell's coach Ian Glover try as they might and they did, his team were creating only half chances and were unable to score as the clock ran down. The match finished at 2-0 and Breton has delivered the Raiders to their first Grand Final appearance for some time.

The Reserve Grade fixture also was very entertaining. Toby Francis knocked in the Raiders first on 15 minutes after he outpaced one would be Scorpion defender. The Scorpions responded soon after via an outstanding strike by Tye O'Connor to even the scores.

The Raiders next two goals came from Andrew 'the white feather' Pettit and at 3-1 looked to have the game locked up but the Scorpions hit back to make it 3-2.

It was left to Tom Willet to put the result beyond doubt when his right foot shot from 25m arced into the net - it was a goal that the young fella will long remember and it was enough to put the Raiders into the Grand Final as well.

In a season of records for the Raiders one more was created after both sides advanced to the Grand Final for the first time in the club's 26 year history. It's certainly a pat on the back for the players and the 'boss' Breton who from the outset has had faith in the ability of the squad.

So this Saturday at the Coffs International Stadium we will see Coffs Lions take on the Raiders in the Grand Final. The Reserve Grade is set down for a 1pm kickoff and the First Grade at 7pm - yes you read that correctly, 7pm why put the matches so far apart? I got nothing on that question, anyhow the Raiders will be providing a bus for supporters that will leave from the Ocean View Hotel at 12:15pm Saturday for the matches - we encourage all our supporters to get behind the local boys one more time!!. A $5 bus fee will get you a seat to see the Raiders create another page in the club's history. Go you Raiders!

PL Women Semi Final Match Reports

Coffs City Utd Lionesses 3 Urunga Raiders 2

What a big weekend it has been for the Coffs United Lionesses! Three grades, including the 16's girls, reserve grade and first grade women's were all vying for a spot in the Grand Final in 2 weeks time.

The 16 years girls took on Boambee at Ayrshire Park on Saturday morning, and took the honours in a 4-3 penalty shoot out victory. The girls have played consistently well for the entire season and have some great talent coming up through the ranks. They were unlucky to miss out on the minor premiership, but proved that they have the spunk to come back and give it their all when it counts.

At Maclean St, The reserve grade women's team took on the Woolgoolga Dolphins. Woolgoolga were definitely there to play and came out with a very strong first half. The Lionesses fought back hard, struggling against the wind. Moving the ball around, the Lionesses kept cool heads and were eventually rewarded when veteran Kylie Mackay slotted one neatly into the net toward the end of the first half. Woolgoolga came back quickly to equalise, with the game at a 1-1 draw going onto half time.

The second half was a titanic battle of wills, with both teams knowing that a win would mean a spot in the grand final. Both teams' defence were unbreakable. Coffs had plenty of shots at goal, with the wind on their side, but could not finish. Finally, when it seemed that the game was headed into extra time, talented Coffs striker Tahlia Farrant got her head onto a ball from a Jess McQueen corner and the ball bobbled into the left hand corner of the goal, in what seemed to everyone to be slow motion. That was it for Woolgoolga, who lacked the time then to come back and equalise.

The Lionesses, who have gained experience and confidence throughout the season, have peaked at just the right time and need to put one more game away for the coveted prize. Outstanding for the team were Tahlia Farrant, Jess McQueen, and defenders Gabbi Spagnolo and Katie Higgins, who, for young girls, showed outstanding maturity in what was a pressure game. Stalwarts Alira Capararo, Kylie Mackay, Leanne Atwal, and Carmen McVicar were rocks for the team.

In the first grade game, the Coffs United Lionesses took on the Urunga Raiders. The previous encounters between these two teams had resulted in two hard fought draws and spectators were not disappointed on Saturday with yet another exciting down to the wire match.

It was Coffs United that came out strongly early in the match creating a number of opportunities on goal, their hard work finally paying off late in the first half with Nicky Rayner, who was causing all sorts of problems for the Urunga defence, scoring a cracker into the nets.

Urunga, not easily discouraged, came back in the second half with the wind in their back and now seemed ready to take the game to the competition front-runners. Using the wind to their advantage, Urunga kept the Coffs defenders busy in the second half, with a number of opportunities at goal.

Eventually, they wore Coffs down to slot two quick goals, taking the lead 2-1. Coffs maintained control of their game and fought back hard. In a tough struggle up front, Laura Hall was taken down in the box to give a much-needed penalty to Coffs just before the end of the second half. Rachel McVicar was never going to miss this one, rocketing the ball past the keeper at such a blistering pace, the keeper couldn't hang onto it. At full time the score was for the third time this year locked at 2 all taking the match into extra time.

The 30min extra time period saw why Coffs United finished number 1 in the Women's First Grade competition. The Coffs girls proved too fit and too strong for the Urunga women and while the Coffs girls tried their hardest to give their coach a heart attack missing a number of goals from the 6yard box they never looked like losing in this period. With 3 minutes to go Laura Hall slotted a volley from a perfectly placed corner from Amanda West into the net to seal the victory for the Lionesses.

A relieved Jodi Worboys, finally, for the first time all day, was able to breath a sigh of relief! Best on ground from the coach were Ella Mackenzie, Amanda West and Cassie Albert who at the age of 14 was able to keep arguably the best striker in the league at bay. "Cassie was an inspiration to her team this weekend", Worboys commented. "She stepped up for only her 2nd match in first grade this year and played with a level of maturity and skill that was well beyond her years." Worboys added "I am so proud of all my girls. They did themselves and their club proud today and I'm looking forward to three similar results in two weeks time".

Special thanks must go to the sponsors of the team, Northern Rivers Ceramics and PRD Nationwide.

Urunga Raiders Women's Soccer Semi-Final Match Report
The game started very evenly with both teams passing the ball around calmly. Urunga had a good chance five minutes into the match when a corner came across the goal mouth but was cleared by a Coffs player. The ball moved to the other end of the field and a Coffs forward made a dangerous run but a good save was made by Morwenna Tunley to prevent score.

Urunga soon had another good opportunity off a corner but the usually trustworthy foot of a midfielder failed to make contact with the ball. The play continued from end to end when a good through ball from a Lionesses player set up a one on two, with a Coffs forward and Urunga defender running side by side headed for goal and the resulting challenge left those two players as well as the Urunga keeper on the ground looking wounded. All players were OK and play resumed.

A rash tackle in a one on one by the Urunga keeper gave Coffs an indirect free kick just inside the box. Urunga set up their defence well and the resulting kick was saved by Morwenna. Soon after, Holly Layt made a good run up the left wing but a Lionesses defender picked up the cross and cleared. Tjirra Francis played well up front causing the Coffs defence many hassles.

A ball from Belinda Moore to Tjirra made its way up the field and then a cross to Holly Layt in the middle whose shot found the keeper. The play was switching from end to end with both teams creating chances although Coffs looked to have the edge creating good looking passages of play. Not long before half time Coffs took the lead with defensive confusion seeing the ball roll over the goal line giving the Lionesses a soft goal. Half time score was Coffs 1 Urunga 0.

Early in the second half, Crystal Halverson took a beautiful corner which found Belinda's head but was steered wide of the target. Coffs then made a very dangerous run with ex-Raider Ella McKenzie beating the defence and firing in a cross to Nicole McVicar's head which was also steered over the target. Coffs seemed to have majority of the possession and the game was in their court.

A loose ball found Holly Layt in the middle and she used the space she had, placed a good pass to Tjirra who beat one defender and shot the ball into the bottom left hand corner, evening the scores up at one a piece. Tjirra continued to cause lots of danger up front and made a break through run all the way to the line putting a cross to Ashlee Mackie who passed to Belinda, whose pass again found Ashlee but the shot was saved. Play got back into Coffs' penalty box and Belinda picked up a good pass and her shot rocketed into the goal. The ball was on its way to Grafton with a speeding ticket but was only stopped by the net making the score 2-1 to the Raiders.

The play soon moved to the other end of the field. Coffs' Laura Hall put herself in front of a winding up Belinda Moore clearance and an injury resulted as well as an undeserved penalty kick. Rachel McVicar put the kick away and all of a sudden the scores were even again.

Defender Rachel Freeman made a breakthrough run up front but was cut off by Coffs' sweeper Danielle Winders. Tjirra Francis also placed a great ball across an open goal but found no feet so the ball rolled out. Urunga found themselves attacking more now and the majority of the play was in Coffs' half. Ashlee Mackie found herself in a one on one with the Coffs goalkeeper and tried to chip her but the ball went wide.

Special mention must go to Kim Barker who defended well preventing many chances Coffs created. Tjirra Francis put in a man of the match performance always playing with aggression and hunger.

The full time whistle blew but no-one could relax as extra time was to follow. In extra time play see sawed quickly from end to end with both teams wanting the first goal out of the extra time. Jenna Tarrant defended well marking Coffs' key striker giving her no room to move.

The first period of extra time ended with no score and the players quickly switched ends. Every player on the field looked exhausted having played for 110 minutes already and the Lionesses seemed to have the edge towards the end of the match. A corner that was well taken with only two minutes remaining found Laura Hall's foot who sent a volley straight into the back of the net, making no error in putting Coffs up.

With the final whistle, Coffs United proceeded straight through to the grand final and Urunga with have a meeting with Corindi next weekend to decide whether they will have a grand final spot also. Good luck to the Raiders.

NBN PL Semi Final Match Reports

Urunga Raiders 0 Coffs City Utd Lions 2

Last Sunday saw the Urunga Raiders contest two semi finals when the reserve grade side played the Northern Storm at Toormina and the first grade squad were up against the Coffs Lions at the Morgo St complex.

The Lions were just coming off one their club's biggest hidings when Sawtell Scorpions whacked in 4 goals unanswered goals. If the Raiders could do the same they would get a free ride to the grand final at Coffs' expense so as the skies cleared and the crowd gathered it was Grafton referee Dave Morgan who blew time on.

The Lions had first use of the ball and soon turned it over to the Raiders after a 'firm' tackle by Raider's midfielder Scott Graham from that exchange the ball was whipped out to Bradd Danzey whose pass found Trevor Sparkes his shot whistled past the keeper's left post. A bright start to the game for the Raiders who'd had the better of the early exchanges.

The first goal however came to Coffs Lions after Brent Turner was fouled just outside Urunga's penalty area. Lion's evergreen Michael Smith stepped up for the free kick. Now in the last match between the clubs it was Smith who'd scored their first with a spanking shot from a very similar position so it was a case of de ja vue for the Raiders as Smith's shot deflected past Raider's keeper Jakob Campbell and put the Lions 1 up on 35 minutes.

It was a stop start affair though with referee Morgon giving the whistle a real going over, half breaks by both sides were dealt with by uncompromising defence. The half finished with the Lions holding a 1 nil advantage which given the closeness of the game could be just enough.

The second half had both sides playing a more settled style of football and chances were created at both ends of the field. Grant Homes was beginning to get his 'tricky' feet moving and only solid play from the likes of Dion Ball thwarted Homes' forays into the Lions penalty area.

At the other end it was the combination of Ben Mackay and Nathan Silvey that was causing most concern for the Raiders. The Lion's second goal came after Brent Turner slipped a ball to Mackay who did enough to fire in a low near post ball that Silvey side footed into the Raider's net.

At two up the Lion's began to look comfortable and try as they might the Raiders created few scoring opportunities in this half. The match finished at Coffs 2 and Raiders 0. So what do the Raiders have to do to past this seemingly rejuvenated Coffs outfit? I'm sure that the 'boss' Breton is drawing up plan B as you read this.

The Raiders had a better day at Toormina though as the Reserves ran out narrow 1-0 winners over the Northern Storm. It was a more open game than the one played at Urunga as the Raider's Tom Willet and Stevie 'two dogs' Toms played dominant midfield roles setting up numerous attacking raids that forwards Sam Ireland and Toby Francis failed to capitalise on.

The match finished at 0-0 in normal time but was decided in the first period of extra time when 'the hammer' Dave Newton scored from 'a thousand yards' his right foot volley left the Storm's keeper motionless on the goal line.

So it would seem that both Raiders sides will be together next weekend for the elimination semi-final with the Reserves playing Sawtell and the First's the winner of Sawtell/Woolgoolga. The venue and date is yet to be announced but with both Raiders sides in the Final so I'm hoping for another huge crowd and great day at Urunga's cabbage patch.

Sawtell Scorpions 2 Woolgoolga Wolves 0

And then there were 3. A 2-0 victory over Woolgoolga ensured the Sawtell Scorpions a final showdown with Urunga next week for the right to meet the Lions in the Grand Final.

Injuries and suspensions covered by a starting position for Dylan Kinninmont and the welcome return of Rory Goddard, a confident Sawtell were quickly into stride.

Relieved of the thankless task for being the central target man, Matt Parkins was causing havoc out wide. From one of his menacing runs came a fine cross to Hayden Kelly who produced a clinical finish from outside the penalty area for a rare event for the Scorpions lately, a goal from open play, not a free kick, penalty or corner in sight.

With their tails up and a strong breeze behind them Sawtell created many more scoring opportunities with Parkins and Danny Clements going closest, but Woopi are a well coached disciplined side and their defence was coping well. Nick Morgan and Lindsay Athorn proving hard nuts to crack.

Chances to Woolgoolga came in the shape of high, swirling in the tricky wind, shots from distance, one hitting the crossbar and another having Daniel Harris at full stretch to save. Half time and the only concern being one should have been more especially with Woopi about to have an even stronger breeze in their favour.

Playing with the wind can often prove more difficult than against it. The ball is best kept on the deck or passes are misjudged and over hit. For Woolgoolga the adjustment was proving difficult. They did however spend considerable more time in Sawtell's half of the field but continually came up against the brick wall of David Gill and playing way above his age and weight Andrew Tindal, who was not only cool and calm in defense but the catalyst for many attacking raids.

At 1-0 the match was still in the balance until a precision pass from midfield Danny Clements released Luke France, whose strong shot keeper Rob James did well to parry only for substitute Tye O'Conner to put away the scraps with his first touch, 2-0 game over !

Woolgoolga gallant in defeat and perhaps missing a few troops of their own can now plan for next season.

Sawtell on the other hand can begin plotting the downfall of Minor Premiers Urunga, having had the better of two drawn encounters with them have nothing to fear. With all hands back on deck team selection will be a good problem to have.

Division 2 Semi Final Match Reports

GRAFTON CITY THROUGH TO PRELIMINARY FINAL

This weekend was the start of semi-final football in the North Coast Football Division 2 Competition with the Bailey and Gough First National Grafton City side up against the Yamba Breakers in the Minor Semi-Final.

After a hard fought, final round win to snatch fourth spot from Corindi-Red Rock in the points table, the Grafton City side were optimistic about their chances against the more favoured Yamba team. City had not beaten Yamba all year, suffering a 1-0 loss and 2 draws in previous games.

The game started with City slowly building their possession and by 10 mins into the game were starting to trouble the Yamba defence with some promising angled balls through their backline for the City strikers of Kye Masters and Keith Grant to run onto, both players having shots which grazed the uprights.

However it was the sharp play of midfielder Michael Fletcher who picked up the first goal when he capitalised on a defensive error from Yamba and jinked his way through the defence to blast the ball past the Yamba keeper. From here City began to settle into their game and were making regular attacks on the Yamba goal.

After one of their players was fouled in the box, City were awarded a penalty shot. The ever confident Robbie Kean sporting a new hair colour this week, stepped up to take the penalty and made no mistake driving the ball low and hard into the net, taking the score to 2-0.

Following a change from the bench, Yamba began to put their game together and gave City some anxious moments with their set play work from corners and free-kicks. Not long before half-time Yamba were awarded a penalty shot when one of their players was fouled just inside the box. The Yamba keeper ran 80m up the field to take the shot only to see City's brilliant young keeper Bri Hourigan deflect the shot away and at half-time the score was 2-0 to City.

The second half started and City now with a slight wind advantage were winning more ball in the middle of the park. About 15mins into the half, Michael Fletcher whilst trying to turn on a ball inside the box was judged to be fouled. Again Robbie Kean stepped up and calmly slotted the ball into the net.

Yamba were throwing everything at City with their keeper making several runs upfield with the ball, but the City backline of Zac Page, Rhett Cansdell, Robbie Kean and Nathan Morley were rock solid all game. Two fresh replacements in Ben Smith and Aaron Davison from the City bench ensured City kept the momentum going.

With about 10 mins to go right midfielder Tim White found himself in the right spot to receive a clever pass and let rip with a cracking shot to register City's fourth goal for the afternoon. The game finished 4-0 to City in what was probably City's best game for the Season so far, with all players turning in an excellent performance.

City will next week, carry the hopes of the Clarence Valley in the Preliminary Final against the loser of the Boambee vs Orara Valley game, which at the time of print was not known.

Sawtell Scorpions 4 Coffs United Lions 0

Regardless of the time of year positions in the league table or what may be at stake, for a Sawtell Scorpion there is no better outcome than a win over arch rivals the Coffs Lions. So a record 4-0 result was the prefect confidence boost for the upcoming semi finals battles ahead.

The Lions certainly came to this contest in top form with a win against runaway leaders Urunga and a thrashing of top four aspirants Northern Storm but this meant nothing to Sawtell who with a new look strike force that contained Luke France clicked from the start. Ben Whittaker ably took over France's defensive role setting up what was to be a frustrating day for the Coffs attack.

Constant pressure by the Scropions resulted in a series of free kicks in attacking range. The opening and candidate for goal of the year came from a Matt Parkins free kick from wide left and a thunderous first time volley by Cameron Swift that had Sawtell ground staff checking the state of the net.

5 minutes later a more central free kick, this time Parkins needed no assistance bouncing the ball in that prefect spot that keepers hate for 2-0. The Lions were now stung into action a high bouncing attempt on goal saw Daniel Harris in the Sawtell goal beaten for the only time on the day but David Gill was on hand to clear. In what could of been a major problem for the Scorpions Whittaker was lost to an ankle injury but debutant 1st Grader Ryan Hayes introduced himself to Lions striker Nat Silvy with crunching clean tackle and the business as usual was resumed.

Another set piece into the Lions box and another great finish by Swift this time with the head. Ben Mackay was proving dangerous but with the assistance of Swift and wing back Jake Glover relishing his new role the Scorpions defence was ably dealing with anything thrown at them. Back up front new striker Luke France added to Coffs woes with a fine headed goal. 4-0, the Sawtell faithful were in heaven and it wasn't even half time.

In the second half it would be fair to say that the intensity dropped as both sides held thoughts of contests to come but the nature of some of Coffs defensive challenges and the introduction of Nick Lambert showed that pride was at stake here. Players from both sides where withdrawn to fight another day but the pace of Matt Parkins still caused nightmares for the double marking Lions defence as did the skill of Luke France.

This new formation for Sawtell certainly worked and may have been found just in time for the Finals. A great team effort that gave keeper Harris one of his quietest days. A win of this ease against the competition favourites is certainly a timely boost before next weeks semi final encounter with Woolgoolga and on this form the Scorpions may get the chance to repeat the dose in either two or three weeks.

Reserve Grade was certainly a different story but with the same scoreline only in favour of the Lions. The two sides will do battle again next week with a Grand Final berth at stake.

Valley United 0 Urunga Raiders 3

So to the last round of an epic season that has seen the Raiders rack up 17 wins 2 draws and one loss that included 11 wins on the trott. Valley United are a combined outfit from the Nambucca/Macksville Valley and they have had a different perspective of the competition this year winning only three games. At second last on the table could they muster something to challenge the boys in maroon and white. Dave Thorn was the centre official and on a sparkling spring like day the Raiders kicked-off.

Much has changed in the way the Raiders play this year. In round 1 against Valley United they were the luckiest of winners after Trevor Sparkes scored in the dieing seconds. In this match however the ball control and movement of players had the Valley boys on the back foot from the word go. As the pressure built on the Valley defence (sometimes comprising all 11 players) the Raiders were searching for way through this tightly packed array of players.

With a string of passes that began with a bleary eyed McCormick finding Pettit on the right flank it ended some 12 passes later with Trevor Sparkes lashing home the Raiders first for the afternoon from 21 metres. A spanking shot that left Aaron Lambie the Valley keeper motionless.

The Valley boys stirred into action though and had their best chance of the game from a corner kick on 26 minutes when promising youngster Chris Lennox thumped in a header that cannoned off the woodwork. Oh at 1-1 it might have been a different storey for the Valley boys. The half finished in an undecided 1-0.

The second half was to be more productive for the Raiders with goals Andrew Pettit who finished an excellent move that had Toby Francis deliver a pin point cross for Pettit to head home number two and the game was put beyond question 20 minutes from time when Kale Hopper scythed through a tiring Valley outfit Hopper's 25m dipping shot too good for a well worked Lambie.

The Valley boys although on the wrong end on the score sheet played to the final whistle and can be proud of their efforts on an afternoon when all didn't go according to plan.

The Final series is upon us with the Raiders playing Northern Storm in the Reserve grade in the minor semi-final. This game looks to be at Toormina at 12pm on Saturday 26th but keep your ears open for any change of venue. The big one though, ie the Major Semi final will be held at the Morgo St complex and the Raiders will face up to the Lions to see who gets a free ride to the Grand final.

What a game this will be! So if you only watch one game this year let it be this one so get there early for a good seat and cheer on the local boys. Kick off at 2pm... Go you Raiders!

Woolgoolga Dolphins 0 Sawtell Scorpions 1

Final clash of season for Dolphins
The Woolgoolga Dolphins saw out the season with a disappointing 0-1 loss to the Sawtell Scorpions on Saturday at Woolgoolga's High Street.

In a low scoring game Sawtell took the lead at the 25 minute mark with a darting attack down the left finished with a well placed shot in the top far corner leaving the Woopi keeper Emma Squires with little hope.

It was a game which epitomised the Woolgoolga season, with the team struggling hard all game but frustratingly unable to find the back of the net. Janice Lacy was striking the ball wonderfully from a number of free kicks outside the 18 yard box, but the Sawtell keeper was in excellent form and repelled the on-target shots time and again.

Nothing fell Woolgoolga's way, despite the obvious desperation of the strikers and midfielders who continued to strive for the elusive goal until the final whistle blew during injury time.

Regardless of the unfavourable outcome for Woolgoolga, it was an engaging game to watch from the sideline with both opponents ardent for the win, despite being out of finals contention.

Player of the match for Woolgoolga was Michelle Merrikin who was excellent on the left wing, particularly in shielding the ball against multiple opposition players, and well placed line ball passes. Also deserving mention are Janice Lacy and Emma Squires in goal.

Urunga Raiders 2 Coffs United Lionesses 2

The top of the table clash between Coffs United and Urunga was clearly going to be the match of the round. Urunga needed to win or draw to make the major semi final against Coffs and the Lionesses were playing for pride after their loss to Corindi.

Both teams were attacking strongly and Tjirra Francis had many runs but all were cut off by Coffs' keeper. The first breakthrough came when Tjirra found herself open on the right hand side and fired in a cracker from outside the 18 yard box and hit the back of the net. Urunga 1 - Coffs 0.

At the kickoff, Urunga were caught napping and a shot made by a midfielder also found the net. Two goals within a minute, the game was on.

The game lifted a notch and Urunga again found themselves attacking. Tjirra Francis had the ball on the right, beat two players and put in a cross to Kathy Mittasch who beat the keeper with a low shot. The rest of the half was more even with both teams putting together good passages of play. No more obvious chances in this half.

In the second half, Coffs were given a free kick about 15 metres outside the penalty box. The kick was well taken and the ball flew over the heads of the defenders as well as the keeper and into the back of the net, making the score even at 2 all. Soon after, Urunga's Ashlee Mackie made a run at goal and was taken out on the edge of the box by a Coffs player. A short kick was taken with a pass to Belinda Moore, who was fouled in the box but with no penalty given, the ball was cleared and Coffs avoided danger again.

The Lionesses continued to pressure the Urunga goal but some good saves were made by Morwenna Tunley to keep the score even. The game see sawed from end to end with both sides hungry and creating dangerous plays.

Coffs looked to have the majority of possession in the second half and the defence of Rachel Freeman, Kim Barker, Jenna Tarrant and Roxy Auld held out all chances in front of goal. Urunga made numerous runs at goal with Ashlee Mackie and Kathy Mittasch finding space up front. Belinda Moore played well in the midfield using her head to stop all high balls from getting into her half.

In the last minutes of the game, Ashlee Mackie found a loose ball in Coffs' half of the field but was beaten to it by the keeper. Special mention must go to Kathy Mittasch who showed commitment all match by always being there to help out, both in attack and defence, she seemed to pop up everywhere.

Also, goalkeeper Morwenna Tunley deserves credit as she made many great saves that prevented Coffs from winning this match.

A good match ended in a well-earned draw. The two teams will meet again next week in the 1st division major semi-final which will be held in Coffs. Be there to support the girls in their appeal to go straight through to the grand final.

Reserve Grade: Urunga Raiders 1 Coffs United Lionesses 0
Only three minutes into the game, the Raiders found the back of the net after a loose ball from the goalkeeper was spilt in front of an oncoming Jessica Carroll who made no mistake in scoring Urunga's first and only goal.

The game then see sawed from end to end with both teams creating good passages of play. Urunga soon got settled again and had the majority of possession and the game was camped in Coffs' half of the pitch. The Raiders were passing well and looked dangerous as they definitely had the Lionesses on the back foot.

The second half was played evenly but Urunga played well enough to keep out the Coffs attack with special mention going to Pru Young who did well attacking the forwards.

This was the last game for Reserve Grade as they had no chance of making the finals and the girls were ecstatic to finish off the season on a winning note by beating the Minor Premiers.

Celebrations were had after the game with champagne flowing freely at the Morgo St grounds. Congratulations to Reserve Grade on a season full of positivity, comradeship and fun.

10th August 2006
Urunga Raiders 2 Boambee Eagles 1

After the big wet on Saturday where all North Coast Football games were cancelled, all Premier League games were forced to be played mid week. Urunga and Boambee played their game on a mild Thursday night at the Morgo St fields.

The game started at a quick pace with both teams very hungry for a win from this match. With Urunga in second place and Boambee in third place and the finals looming, the pressure on both teams was high. Urunga came out firing with the first whistle. Tjirra Francis and Crystal Halverson were flying up front (like a zyrtec!) playing fast balls & making quick breaks. Urunga took the lead first, 20 minutes into the match, when Tjirra Francis picked up a rebound & put the ball smoothly over the line.

The Raiders continued to put pressure onto the Boambee defence and goalkeeper, showing the precise passing and speed that has gotten them into the top 2. Kim Barker and Rachel Freeman defended well, shutting down any chance Boambee had, and goalkeeper Morwenna Tunley also made some great saves to deny the Eagles any chances.

A piece of brilliance from Belinda Moore gave Urunga their second goal and they looked to have control of the match. They went into half time content with a 2-0 lead.

The game was more even in the second half with Boambee lifting the pressure and causing Urunga plenty of hassles. Rachel Freeman made some great defensive moves to keep Boambee scoreless. The young Boambee forwards made breaks but Urunga kept shutting them down. A rash tackle by Urunga's keeper was lucky not to be a penalty when a Boambee player had to leave the field injured.

The Raiders were soon caught still when a cross by Boambee's Sam Taylor hit the far post and crossed the goal line. This put the score line to 2-1. Boambee were in the match once again. The Eagles looked dangerous when they made a fast counter attack but were denied by good pressure from Jenna Tarrant.

The last five minutes of the match were packed with action. An indirect free kick was given to Boambee on the edge of Urunga's penalty box when goalie Morwenna Tunley picked up the ball. No-one on the sideline could quite understand what the kick was for exactly, but the play was quickly shut down by Urunga's defenders. The ball was soon in the other half of the field when an uncharacteristic error by Boambee saw an obvious backpass to the keeper picked up. This gave the Urunga side an indirect kick in a similar position as two minutes beforehand. History was repeated and goal was prevented.

The play moved quickly to the other end of the field where Belinda Moore had a good shot which just tipped over the crossbar.

With only seconds remaining the excitement was building and both teams lifted but nothing prevailed and the game finished with a 2-1 result. This game was, again, an excellent showcase of the football talent in this region. An exciting match that had everyone on the edge of their seats until the final whistle blew.

Reserve Grade: Urunga Raiders 0 Boambee Eagles 1
In Reserve grade, the match against Boambee was a must win as the Raiders had to win all three of their remaining matches to advance to the semi finals. Boambee were the much stronger team in this match with Urunga managing only two shots at goal all game. The Urunga defenders were the stars of this game denying opportunity after opportunity from the young, fast Boambee strikers.

The first half saw a quick break away from a Boambee forward result in goal and at half time the score was 1-0.

The Raiders did extremely well in the second half keeping the Eagles scoreless and this was reflected by Coach Brendon Mason's talk after the game. Although the girls didn't get a win, congratulations must go to the whole team for a fantastic effort in a tough match.

Urunga Raiders 0 Coffs Coast Tigers 1

After playing a very physical game against Boambee less than 48 hours ago, Urunga definitely had a tough task ahead of them against Coffs Coast.

For the first 30 minutes, the play see sawed from end to end with no real obvious chances from either side. A corner awarded to Coffs Coast was beautifully taken tricking the Urunga defence, going over everyone's heads and calmly put in by one of the Coffs players. Coffs Coast 1 Urunga 0.

The Raiders had a few chances before half time but to no result.

Urunga came out hungry in the second half creating many chances. Tjirra Francis was playing well up front making fast breaks causing hassles for the Tigers defence. She made a great run down the left wing beating a few players and putting a ball across to Claire Chapman whose shot hit the right hand post. The rebound was cleared out and the score remained at 1-0.

After a misunderstanding in the Urunga side an indirect free kick was awarded to Coffs Coast for a back pass to the goalkeeper. Urunga cleared the ball and relieved some pressure in the defensive line.

Soon after, a chance came for Urunga when a through ball was chipped over the defence line and picked up by Heidi Francis who was challenged by the keeper resulting in an injury. Words were exchanged by both teams at the stoppage and it was predicted that there would be an aggressive finish to the game.

Play was restarted and the ball was moved up and down the field like a ping pong match with both sides trying to create a chance and break down the other team's defence.

The only other chance in the match for Urunga came when Tjirra Francis made a breakaway and fired off a shot but the Coffs Coast goalkeeper managed to get a toe to it and prevent a goal.

The Raiders were not at their best today and will have to work hard in lead up to next week's encounter with top placed Coffs United Lionesses. This match, clearly the match of the round, is much anticipated after a 2-2 draw the last time the two teams met.

Reserve Grade: Urunga Raiders 2 Coffs Coast Tigers 2
With no chance of being able to get into the semi finals, the Urunga side were told to relax and have fun, and that they did, playing possibly their best game of the season. Urunga dominated the first half of the game with precise passing and making good runs off the ball.

The first goal of the game, though, came from Coffs Coast after a good individual run by a midfield player led to a shot that was too good for the Urunga defence. Half time score 1-0 to the Tigers.

Urunga came into the second half hungry and again, played together as a team showing great football skills. The Raiders changed tactics and gave usual defender, Pru Young, a run up front. This proved successful, as she scored her first goal of the season 10 minutes into the half tying up the score.

Another positional move saw sweeper Skye Pettit moved onto the wing and immediately she made a run up the line and her resulting shot was too good for the Coffs Coast keeper. Suddenly, Urunga found themselves in front 2-1.

Unfortunately, though, the Raiders couldn't hold the Tigers out as a scramble in front of the Urunga goal that seemed to last for minutes, got put away with only 10 minutes of the match remaining.

A great Reserve grade game with a draw being a fair result. Best players for Urunga were Allie Boswell and Pru Young, but congratulations to all players on their best performance of the season.

Valley Utd 0 Coffs Coast Tigers 1

The Tigers managed to edge out Valley in an entertaining, if at times, scrappy encounter at Nambucca. Opening 20mins were fairly even with both defenses snuffing out any attack.

Valley then had an excellent spell in which they were unlucky not to hit the front. Terry Hunt fired in a left wing cross which was headed back by Dean Murton to Adam Ross on the edge of the box. Ross then struck a fierce volley which appeared a certainty for the top left corner until a flying Chris Edwards got a fingertip to the ball to deflect for a corner. From the corner Dean Murton then went close with a header that flashed past the right upright.

With the tempo of the game now full bore, a series of Tigers corners then had Valley's defence at 6s & 7s with only some desperate goalmouth clearances keeping the game scoreless. The halftime break came slightly earlier for Valley's Dean Murton when he hobbled off & was taken to hospital with a suspected broken ankle.

A slow start by both sides after the interval kept chances minimal early on. Tigers Luke Stow collected a right wing cross & blazed over; a good interchange of passes between Jesse Stanton & 'Johnny' Peawkumdee resulted in his low drive fizzing past the left post.

Midway through Valley seemed to lose intensity & momentum of the game swung firmly in Tigers favour. They were much faster to the ball & showed much more movement off it. After sustained pressure however & a flurry of shots by the Tigers, it seemed as if there was no way through a packed Valley defense. Phil Barrera then met a corner with a downward header that bounced low & left 'keeper Aaron Lambie unsighted behind a forest of legs. 1-0 Tigers.

From the restart Valley could have equalised when a fine through ball from David Funnell put Jesse Stanton away, but his drive was well wide. Luke Venn should have made it 2-0 after collecting a left wing cross & only the keeper to beat, headed wide of the right post.

A mix up at the back should have sealed the match for Tigers but was prevented by a desperate sliding on the line clearance by Tim Zirkler. Lambie then denied Venn from close in with a parry round the post & then a deflection via his leg prevented a Luke Stow drive. Venn had another glorious chance moments later with a one on one but somehow fired over the bar.

Moments before the final whistle Valley went extremely close to pinching a point. Shawn 'Chucky' Kelly found some space on the edge of the box & drilled a superb curling shot towards the top right corner of the net. Tigers 'keeper Edwards again repeated his feat of earlier, came from nowhere & tipped the ball past the post.

All in all, a deserved win to the Tigers who created the majority of chances, especially in the 2nd half. Valley will rue their lack of finishing, but a much better display than their last weekend drubbing at Korora.

Reserve Grade: An excellent first half by Valley saw them 4-0 up with goals by David Funnell, Tim Fraser & 2 from Roy Mitchell. Tigers' Clint Silvia pulled one back in the 2nd half via the penalty spot but Valley ran out deserved 4-1 victors.

Urunga Raiders 3 Woolgoolga Wolves 0

It has been a busy time football wise down at the Morgo St 'cabbage patch', three matches in a week have tested all the players endurance. After the first loss of the season against Coffs Lions the Raiders played Woolgoolga Wolves last Tuesday evening in a catch up game.

The Raiders have had the wood on the Wolves this season running out 3-0 and 3-1 winners in the previous two encounters between the clubs. But after the mauling dished out by the Lions the $64 question was can the Raiders get back to their winning ways?.

It started the right way for the Raiders when their reserve grade side played arguably their best game of the year with Sam Ireland bagging a brace in a 2-0 win. The Raiders are a district club and this year's reserve grade side is reflective of that with the most talented juniors in the valley on show and they played excellent football for the 90 minutes. Players such as Tom Willet, Dominic Kelly, Jackson Lindsay, Matise Thiering and Ben Dooley will form the backbone of the club in the years to come and if that be the case the future of football in the district looks bright indeed.

The first grade match had the Raiders on top from the start as Trevor Sparkes was awarded a penalty in the 8th minute. His spot kick put the Raiders 1 up and the boys were clearly up for this game. With Toby Francis as Sparkes' strike partner the Wolves defence had plenty on their plate.

The Raiders second goal came from an excellent left side play when Bradd Danzey picked up the run of Francis with a bullet like pass. Francis rounded one defender and played the ball in to Trevor Sparkes who lashed home number two for the night. While it was all going pearshaped for the Wolves, the Raiders were creating the majority of chances and at half time looked to be in demolition mode.

The second half saw more of the same, Kale Hopper was beginning to stretch his legs on the left side, his close control was proving a problem for the Woopi back 4. The third goal of the night came after Hopper was able to dance around his marker releasing a cross that found Kane Kofoed unmarked and able to head home for the Raiders. It was a well taken goal by the big fella who has scored a few goals similar to that one this season. The match ended at Raiders 3 Woolgoolga nil.

Playing for Promotion

This Thursday evening under lights the Boambee Bombers will be hosting the Orara Valley Dingoes in a match that will decide which club will be leaving 2nd division and joining the Premier League Competition for season 2007.

The Bunker will be no place for the faint hearted as both these teams have had impressive seasons and both will be out to show not only their supporters but other Premier League Clubs that they have what it takes. Both teams have been on top of the competition since round 4 and go into this match tied on competition points with only two goals separating them.

The Boambee Bombers, proudly sponsored by Coffs City Painting Professionals, have been under the guidance of Coach Gordon Barton with the assistance of Neil Brayshaw. Barton and Brayshaw put together a side at the start of the season of players that were looking for a challenge and who were willing to put in every week for a shot at promotion.

"I believe what we have achieved this year has been tremendous" Barton said. "We have moulded a side that is very competitive and against a side like Orara we will have to play our best football if we hope to move ahead."

Boambee Bombers captain Mark Blanchard also has full faith in his team "We are going into this match very confident, and although we will be without a couple of key players due to suspension, I am sure that the players who take the park will be ready to play." Blanchard also added "We are all well aware of how good Orara can be and it will up to each player to have a go and ensure our position in Premier League next year."

The game kicks off at 7pm at the Bunker at Middle Boambee and there will be full canteen facilities available.

Westlawn Tigers 3 Coffs Coast Tigers 0

Westlawn Tigers Topple Coffs Tigers
Last Saturday saw the Crown Hotel Westlawn Tigers produce a classy win over Coffs Coast Tigers in their final home game of the season in Round 20 of the North Coast Premier League.

After an evenly poised start, the Grafton side began to control possession and field position more. Jamie Pitkin opened the scoring for Westlawn about 20 minutes in, turning and cracking a brilliant shot into the top right corner of the net. From here Westlawn began to dominate as they stepped up another notch and pressed the Coffs defence regularly.

The next goal came from a free kick taken outside the box with Matt Lobsey running in near the back post unchallenged for a header into the net.

After a 2-0 half time lead, the Grafton side had several more chances including a Andrew Laverty shot that hit the cross bar. Westlawn finished off the game with a superb move between Jamie Pitkin and Andrew Laverty with Pitkin heading the ball to Laverty who played it beautifully between defenders to set Pitkin up for an easy one on one with the keeper to go 3-0 up.

Coffs were not without their chances but due to great goal keeping from Brad Robertson, were deprived of a score despite a number of good chances.

Westlawn Premier League Coach, Terry Wratten, was very pleased with the effort and execution his players put in to the game, reluctant to single out anyone for praise. Keeper Brad Robertson had a great game, keeping a clean sheet, whilst the attacking combination of Jamie Pitkin and Andrew Laverty maintained the threat on the Coffs goal. The Westlawn midfield worked well with their accurate passing and playmaking setting up the forwards. The game was an entertaining spectacle enjoyed by a good sized crowd on the hill.

The earlier match saw the Westlawn Tigers Premier Reserves in a comeback against the Coffs Coast Tigers. After a tense first half of end to end football with Westlawn having the better of the possession and field position, the teams went to the sheds locked at nil all.

Just after half time, the Grafton side had a chance to go one nil up with a penalty but a great save by the Coffs keeper kept the scoresheet blank. Shortly after the goal drought broke when Coffs slipped the ball into the net from a congested box to go 1-0 up. Soon after Coffs went 2-0 up with a strike from outside the box that ricocheted off the post and keeper.

Westlawn came back into contention with a James Connor corner that curled into the goal with the keeper only just getting a touch to it. Westlawn drew the score up to 2-2 with a Mitch Ware cross across the box deflecting off a Coffs defender and into the goal. Coffs had a late opportunity to take the game with a penalty when Adam Pearce was sent off, however Westlawn keeper Joel Gosson, made a terrific save to keep the final score at 2-2.

Coffs United Lions 3 Urunga Raiders 1

The Coffs City United Lions ended the unbeaten run of the Urunga Raiders with a well-deserved 3:1 win at the weekend.

The Raiders were fired up thinking that getting a result in this game would just about see them through to a whole season undefeated. The Lions however were in no mood to get beaten by the Raiders for the third time in a row and exploded out of the blocks.

Within 5 minutes Mick Smith had put the Lions one up with an exquisitely flighted free kick over the wall and dipping just inside the keepers left hand post. The Lions made use of their better possession rate to score two further excellent goals the first from Brent Turner and the next from Nathan Silvey.

At half time 3:0 seemed a combatable score and in previous seasons you could have said that was that but this season Urunga are a very fine outfit and the Lions have given away good leads before. When Trevor Sparks scored from the penalty spot just into the second half there would have been a few nervous Lions coaching staff and supporters.

Luckily for them the Lions didn’t fold under the pressure and the rest of the half was pretty even. Good football was played by both sides, good hard tackling and a demonstration of how a tough uncompromising football game can be really entertaining.

The Lions won this game on their superb first half performance and against this Urunga side nothing less would do. It seems inevitable that these sides will meet again in the final series and I for one can hardly wait.

In a fitting curtain raiser the Reserve grade game was a tight affair with no space given to anybody out on the field. Excellent defending was the name of this game and 0:0 a fair result,

WOLVES SCAVENGE A WIN
Woolgoolga Wolves hosted Sawtell Scorpions on a glorious Sunday afternoon in what was another MUST WIN GAME for the Wolves to wrap up 4th spot on the ladder. With Sawtell in excellent form it was always going to be a close, tough encounter that was sure to keep both sets of supporters on the edge of their seats.

The early exchanges were very even with both sides probing for potential weaknesses. The game continued in this vein for the next 35 minutes with both sides struggling in the very warm conditions to stamp their authority on a game.

Neither side was playing the caliber of football they are capable of, however this all changed soon after when Sawtell launched a precision attacking move which put their striker into space inside the box only to be fouled by the Wolves sweeper. The Wolves supporters held their collective breaths as the Sawtell Striker having sent the keeper the wrong way hammered the ball over the bar.

Whilst this Houdini escape should have stirred the Wolves into action it was the Scorpions who put aside the disappointment and dominated play up until half time. Whilst the Wolves have not enjoyed a lot of luck this year it was obvious that The WOLF god was smiling on them and Sawtell were desperately unlucky not to be at least 2 up at half time.

Match action from NBN Premier League, Woolgoolga Wolves V Sawtell Scorpions on Sun 13/8/06 - photo courtesy of Warren Alder

The Wolves half time discussion was based on getting back to basics, holding possession and creating options off the ball. But is it any wonder that coach's age visibly during a season as the Wolves seemed incapable of instituting half time instructions.

Whilst not being privy to Sawtell's words of wisdom they certainly came out full of running and continued to dominate play and created several tremendous opportunities only to see the last pass or the strike on goal go astray. Sawtell's dominance continued until the 70th minute when on the break against the run of play Wolves attacking midfielder Anthony Baston was put into space only to shoot wide of the target.

Ten minutes later The Wolves created another great opportunity against the run of play but again failed to find the target. Sawtell continued to play the better football and it only seemed a matter of time before they converted their dominance into goals. At the 85th and 86th minute Sawtell created 2 fantastic scoring chances only to see the ball fly wide of the goals. One sensed that the frustration of not being able to convert opportunities into goals was starting to weigh heavily on Sawtell shoulders and that it would come back to haunt them.

And haunt them it did with only 7 minutes to go the Wolves put on an excellent attacking move with precision passing between attacking midfielder Anthony Baston and livewire striker Rick Barnier resulting in an excellent lay off to man of the match Craig Gralton who made no mistake in firing in a low well placed drive which gave the keeper no chance.

Wolves up 1 nil and the faithful were howling but could they hang on? Sawtell to their credit threw everything at the Wolves in the last 7 minutes but as had been the case all game they just couldn't convert the pressure into goals. When the referee blew the final whistle The Wolves had prevailed in a game where they rarely played at their best, but as someone once said it is the mark of a good side when you can fashion a win out of a poor performance.

Our thanks to Sawtell who play the game in great spirit and are a pleasure to host. We look forward to meeting them in the semi finals where I am sure supporters will be treated to another outstanding game of football with the Scorpion God being a little more fortuitous than it was today for our visitors, surely we jest.

The Wolves next hurdle is the postponed fixture against the Urunga Raiders set down for Tuesday night at Urunga, we urge all the Wolves faithful to get there in numbers to support the boys in what should be a memorable clash.

Match action from NBN Premier League, Woolgoolga Wolves V Sawtell Scorpions on Sun 13/8/06 - photo courtesy of Warren Alder

Reserve Grade: This really should have been a no contest with the well performed 2nd placed Sawtell taking on the 5th placed Wolves outfit that are only playing for pride and with an eye to next season.

Sawtell dominated the early exchanges and were ahead after 4 minutes when a free kick resulted in a goal mouth scramble which saw Sawtell poke the ball across the line. The Scorpions continued to control proceedings until the 13th minute when a brilliant move started and finished by jack in the box midfielder Ryan Zelvis resulted in the best goal of the game and tied the game up at one apiece.

Sawtell continued to pressure the Wolves defence and from a fairly innocuous cross the Sawtell striker out jumped the Wolves defenders and advancing keeper to neatly back head goal number two. The game continued to ebb and flow with Sawtell dominating until the half time whistle.

Upon resumption the game deteriorated a little with neither side being able to capitalise on numerous goal scoring opportunities. Sawtell eventually ran out deserved winners 2 - 1 although it must be said that the young Wolves pack were far from disgraced and could well be a force next year.

Northern Storm 6 Valley United 1

Cyclone Tumse Destroys Valley
Despite my poor attempt at a headline, it was more a solid 30min front of sheer pressure that blew away any Valley hopes in this match. Although the scoresheet will show Josh Tumse scoring 4, it was a top team effort that enabled his memorable afternoon. Storm played a brand of quick one two football combined with equally rapid off the ball movement that had Valley floundering from kick off.

The first goal came at the 6min mark when Kynan Corsi executed a well placed header following a right wing cross. Valley's only chances came shortly after with a blaze over the bar from Chris Lennox & a side netting shot from Terry Hunt. Another deep cross, this time from the left, ended up at Josh Tumse's feet & from close in, he nicked his first of the match to make it 2-0.

With gaps at the back one could drive a truck through, Storm duly punished Valley with 3 more goals: Tumse picked up a poor back pass & slotted the ball into the bottom right corner of the net. An unmarked Evan Williams made easy work of putting away a low drive after being left alone in the middle. It was then hat-trick time for Tumse & 5-0 to Storm as he rifled home via a parry off keeper Aaron Lambie.

Valley did manage to pull a goal back before the break when a typical mazy run by Jesse Stanton saw him upended in the box. Stanton put away the resultant penalty giving Storm keeper Dave Matthews no chance. Just before the halftime whistle, Jade Porter went close with a header, denied by an agile tip over the bar by Lambie.

It was a different Valley who came out for the 2nd half, stung by a bit of a blowtorch tirade from coach Jeff Thorn, the side were far more competitive. Although they did not create too many opportunities up front to reduce the deficit, marking was tighter & thus possession an improvement on earlier.

With Storm now finding the going a bit tougher, only chances of note fell firstly to the lively Corsi who went close with a free kick that Lambie tipped around the post. Then the only goal of the half (& his 4th of the game) which came from 'man of the match' Tumse when he met a left wing corner with a smart header into the top left of the net. Tumse nearly made it 5 with a shot then striking the crossbar.

With the injection late on of some fresh legs, Valley had a couple of late chances to make the scoreline more respectable, but failed to find the net & the match finished a deserved 6-1 to Northern Storm.

To sum up: a blistering first half display by the Storm maybe aided & abetted by a lacklustre Valley. Impressive for Storm were obviously Josh Tumse plus as per normal, the quicksilver Kynan Corsi. For Valley: best would have to be 'keeper Aaron Lambie, who apart from one lapse of concentration, prevented an avalanche of goals. Young Chris Lennox put in a solid performance & one that bodes well for Valley's future.

In Reserve Grade: Storm had a comfortable 4-0 win with goals from Tristran Albert & BJ Wendt plus 2 from Doyle Clare.
