Westlawn Tigers Topple Coffs Tigers
Last Saturday saw the Crown Hotel Westlawn Tigers produce a classy win over Coffs Coast Tigers in their final home game of the season in Round 20 of the North Coast Premier League.
After an evenly poised start, the Grafton side began to control possession and field position more. Jamie Pitkin opened the scoring for Westlawn about 20 minutes in, turning and cracking a brilliant shot into the top right corner of the net. From here Westlawn began to dominate as they stepped up another notch and pressed the Coffs defence regularly.
The next goal came from a free kick taken outside the box with Matt Lobsey running in near the back post unchallenged for a header into the net.
After a 2-0 half time lead, the Grafton side had several more chances including a Andrew Laverty shot that hit the cross bar. Westlawn finished off the game with a superb move between Jamie Pitkin and Andrew Laverty with Pitkin heading the ball to Laverty who played it beautifully between defenders to set Pitkin up for an easy one on one with the keeper to go 3-0 up.
Coffs were not without their chances but due to great goal keeping from Brad Robertson, were deprived of a score despite a number of good chances.
Westlawn Premier League Coach, Terry Wratten, was very pleased with the effort and execution his players put in to the game, reluctant to single out anyone for praise. Keeper Brad Robertson had a great game, keeping a clean sheet, whilst the attacking combination of Jamie Pitkin and Andrew Laverty maintained the threat on the Coffs goal. The Westlawn midfield worked well with their accurate passing and playmaking setting up the forwards. The game was an entertaining spectacle enjoyed by a good sized crowd on the hill.
The earlier match saw the Westlawn Tigers Premier Reserves in a comeback against the Coffs Coast Tigers. After a tense first half of end to end football with Westlawn having the better of the possession and field position, the teams went to the sheds locked at nil all.
Just after half time, the Grafton side had a chance to go one nil up with a penalty but a great save by the Coffs keeper kept the scoresheet blank. Shortly after the goal drought broke when Coffs slipped the ball into the net from a congested box to go 1-0 up. Soon after Coffs went 2-0 up with a strike from outside the box that ricocheted off the post and keeper.
Westlawn came back into contention with a James Connor corner that curled into the goal with the keeper only just getting a touch to it. Westlawn drew the score up to 2-2 with a Mitch Ware cross across the box deflecting off a Coffs defender and into the goal. Coffs had a late opportunity to take the game with a penalty when Adam Pearce was sent off, however Westlawn keeper Joel Gosson, made a terrific save to keep the final score at 2-2.

Coffs United Lions 3 Urunga Raiders 1
The Coffs City United Lions ended the unbeaten run of the Urunga Raiders with a well-deserved 3:1 win at the weekend.
The Raiders were fired up thinking that getting a result in this game would just about see them through to a whole season undefeated. The Lions however were in no mood to get beaten by the Raiders for the third time in a row and exploded out of the blocks.
Within 5 minutes Mick Smith had put the Lions one up with an exquisitely flighted free kick over the wall and dipping just inside the keepers left hand post. The Lions made use of their better possession rate to score two further excellent goals the first from Brent Turner and the next from Nathan Silvey.
At half time 3:0 seemed a combatable score and in previous seasons you could have said that was that but this season Urunga are a very fine outfit and the Lions have given away good leads before. When Trevor Sparks scored from the penalty spot just into the second half there would have been a few nervous Lions coaching staff and supporters.
Luckily for them the Lions didn’t fold under the pressure and the rest of the half was pretty even. Good football was played by both sides, good hard tackling and a demonstration of how a tough uncompromising football game can be really entertaining.
The Lions won this game on their superb first half performance and against this Urunga side nothing less would do. It seems inevitable that these sides will meet again in the final series and I for one can hardly wait.
In a fitting curtain raiser the Reserve grade game was a tight affair with no space given to anybody out on the field. Excellent defending was the name of this game and 0:0 a fair result,

Woolgoolga Wolves 1 Sawtell Scorpions 0
WOLVES SCAVENGE A WIN
Woolgoolga Wolves hosted Sawtell Scorpions on a glorious Sunday afternoon in what was another MUST WIN GAME for the Wolves to wrap up 4th spot on the ladder. With Sawtell in excellent form it was always going to be a close, tough encounter that was sure to keep both sets of supporters on the edge of their seats.
The early exchanges were very even with both sides probing for potential weaknesses. The game continued in this vein for the next 35 minutes with both sides struggling in the very warm conditions to stamp their authority on a game.
Neither side was playing the caliber of football they are capable of, however this all changed soon after when Sawtell launched a precision attacking move which put their striker into space inside the box only to be fouled by the Wolves sweeper. The Wolves supporters held their collective breaths as the Sawtell Striker having sent the keeper the wrong way hammered the ball over the bar.
Whilst this Houdini escape should have stirred the Wolves into action it was the Scorpions who put aside the disappointment and dominated play up until half time. Whilst the Wolves have not enjoyed a lot of luck this year it was obvious that The WOLF god was smiling on them and Sawtell were desperately unlucky not to be at least 2 up at half time.
The Wolves half time discussion was based on getting back to basics, holding possession and creating options off the ball. But is it any wonder that coach's age visibly during a season as the Wolves seemed incapable of instituting half time instructions.
Whilst not being privy to Sawtell's words of wisdom they certainly came out full of running and continued to dominate play and created several tremendous opportunities only to see the last pass or the strike on goal go astray. Sawtell's dominance continued until the 70th minute when on the break against the run of play Wolves attacking midfielder Anthony Baston was put into space only to shoot wide of the target.
Ten minutes later The Wolves created another great opportunity against the run of play but again failed to find the target. Sawtell continued to play the better football and it only seemed a matter of time before they converted their dominance into goals. At the 85th and 86th minute Sawtell created 2 fantastic scoring chances only to see the ball fly wide of the goals. One sensed that the frustration of not being able to convert opportunities into goals was starting to weigh heavily on Sawtell shoulders and that it would come back to haunt them.
And haunt them it did with only 7 minutes to go the Wolves put on an excellent attacking move with precision passing between attacking midfielder Anthony Baston and livewire striker Rick Barnier resulting in an excellent lay off to man of the match Craig Gralton who made no mistake in firing in a low well placed drive which gave the keeper no chance.
Wolves up 1 nil and the faithful were howling but could they hang on? Sawtell to their credit threw everything at the Wolves in the last 7 minutes but as had been the case all game they just couldn't convert the pressure into goals. When the referee blew the final whistle The Wolves had prevailed in a game where they rarely played at their best, but as someone once said it is the mark of a good side when you can fashion a win out of a poor performance.
Our thanks to Sawtell who play the game in great spirit and are a pleasure to host. We look forward to meeting them in the semi finals where I am sure supporters will be treated to another outstanding game of football with the Scorpion God being a little more fortuitous than it was today for our visitors, surely we jest.
The Wolves next hurdle is the postponed fixture against the Urunga Raiders set down for Tuesday night at Urunga, we urge all the Wolves faithful to get there in numbers to support the boys in what should be a memorable clash.
Reserve Grade: This really should have been a no contest with the well performed 2nd placed Sawtell taking on the 5th placed Wolves outfit that are only playing for pride and with an eye to next season.
Sawtell dominated the early exchanges and were ahead after 4 minutes when a free kick resulted in a goal mouth scramble which saw Sawtell poke the ball across the line. The Scorpions continued to control proceedings until the 13th minute when a brilliant move started and finished by jack in the box midfielder Ryan Zelvis resulted in the best goal of the game and tied the game up at one apiece.
Sawtell continued to pressure the Wolves defence and from a fairly innocuous cross the Sawtell striker out jumped the Wolves defenders and advancing keeper to neatly back head goal number two. The game continued to ebb and flow with Sawtell dominating until the half time whistle.
Upon resumption the game deteriorated a little with neither side being able to capitalise on numerous goal scoring opportunities. Sawtell eventually ran out deserved winners 2 - 1 although it must be said that the young Wolves pack were far from disgraced and could well be a force next year.

Northern Storm 6 Valley United 1
Cyclone Tumse Destroys Valley
Despite my poor attempt at a headline, it was more a solid 30min front of sheer pressure that blew away any Valley hopes in this match. Although the scoresheet will show Josh Tumse scoring 4, it was a top team effort that enabled his memorable afternoon. Storm played a brand of quick one two football combined with equally rapid off the ball movement that had Valley floundering from kick off.
The first goal came at the 6min mark when Kynan Corsi executed a well placed header following a right wing cross. Valley's only chances came shortly after with a blaze over the bar from Chris Lennox & a side netting shot from Terry Hunt. Another deep cross, this time from the left, ended up at Josh Tumse's feet & from close in, he nicked his first of the match to make it 2-0.
With gaps at the back one could drive a truck through, Storm duly punished Valley with 3 more goals: Tumse picked up a poor back pass & slotted the ball into the bottom right corner of the net. An unmarked Evan Williams made easy work of putting away a low drive after being left alone in the middle. It was then hat-trick time for Tumse & 5-0 to Storm as he rifled home via a parry off keeper Aaron Lambie.
Valley did manage to pull a goal back before the break when a typical mazy run by Jesse Stanton saw him upended in the box. Stanton put away the resultant penalty giving Storm keeper Dave Matthews no chance. Just before the halftime whistle, Jade Porter went close with a header, denied by an agile tip over the bar by Lambie.
It was a different Valley who came out for the 2nd half, stung by a bit of a blowtorch tirade from coach Jeff Thorn, the side were far more competitive. Although they did not create too many opportunities up front to reduce the deficit, marking was tighter & thus possession an improvement on earlier.
With Storm now finding the going a bit tougher, only chances of note fell firstly to the lively Corsi who went close with a free kick that Lambie tipped around the post. Then the only goal of the half (& his 4th of the game) which came from 'man of the match' Tumse when he met a left wing corner with a smart header into the top left of the net. Tumse nearly made it 5 with a shot then striking the crossbar.
With the injection late on of some fresh legs, Valley had a couple of late chances to make the scoreline more respectable, but failed to find the net & the match finished a deserved 6-1 to Northern Storm.
To sum up: a blistering first half display by the Storm maybe aided & abetted by a lacklustre Valley. Impressive for Storm were obviously Josh Tumse plus as per normal, the quicksilver Kynan Corsi. For Valley: best would have to be 'keeper Aaron Lambie, who apart from one lapse of concentration, prevented an avalanche of goals. Young Chris Lennox put in a solid performance & one that bodes well for Valley's future.
In Reserve Grade: Storm had a comfortable 4-0 win with goals from Tristran Albert & BJ Wendt plus 2 from Doyle Clare.
