Goalkeeping Coach Education Session with Andy Lennon

Photo: Goalkeeping Coach Education Session, Woolgoolga 7th October 2009

With Tuesday being a rest day in the National Youth Championships, North Coast Football utilized the skills of those present from its governing body, Northern NSW Football, by providing a one off coaching session for local club coaches.

Specifically, Northern NSW Goalkeeping coach, Andy Lennon, gathered some local goalkeepers at Woolgoolga's High Street playing fields and ran them through a high intensity drill for the benefit of the club coaches who had gathered from across the zone.

Club coaches often find coaching goalkeepers the most difficult because it is such a specialist position, so NCFZ Football Manager, Richard Evans, called upon his counterpart at Northern NSW, Dave Smith, to set up a technical session for their benefit.

Dave Smith arrived at Woolgoolga with Andy Lennon, who was more than happy to put half a dozen local goalkeepers through a series of drills while he spoke about the drills to the watching coaches.

Around two dozen coaches were in attendance for the session which covered the technical aspects of several facets of goalkeeping from warm ups to diving and power shot stopping.

2009 FFA National Youth Championships for Boys

The next generation of potential Qantas Socceroos will be on show in Coffs Harbour from this weekend at the 2009 FFA National Youth Championships for Boys.

There will be 384 players from the Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales Country, New South Wales Metropolitan, Northern NSW, Northern Territory, Queensland Country, Queensland Metropolitan, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria Country, Victoria Metropolitan and Western Australia competing at the annual tournament at BCU International Stadium in Coffs Harbour.

FFA CEO Ben Buckley acknowledged the importance of these Championships in the FFA talent identification program.

While the Championships are not the only means of being spotted as a player with potential, this tournament is traditionally an important component of our talent identification for young talented players.

I am sure this year will be no different; and there will be players at these Championships who will go on to represent Australia with distinction all the way up to the Qantas Socceroos.

High quality opposition helps us to improve our own standards, quality of play, coaching and facilities; and, as the quality of our national teams improves, the impact will be felt down the line to the grassroots players which gives us better standards of competition as well as a larger pool of potential players for the National Youth League, the Hyundai A-League and the national teams.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank our commercial partners Qantas, Foxtel, Nike, Westfield, Hyundai, SOLO, NAB, the Australian Sports Commission, FOX Sports and Optus for their support of this event and would also like to acknowledge the efforts of the Northern NSW Football Federation and Coffs Harbour Council for, once again, hosting the tournament,"  concluded Buckley.

In addition, The Zurich Referee Education Experience will once again occur which will provide a unique opportunity for two young referees to shadow the Hyundai A-League match officials during the Hyundai A-League 2010 Finals Series. The two young referees who have performed best and are appointed to the two finals of the 2009 FFA National Youth Championships for Boys on Saturday 10 October 2009 will each be awarded a Zurich Referee Education Experience.

The Zurich Referee Education Experience will offer the young referees the opportunity to observe the designated match officials as they prepare for, manage and report on a full match day during the Hyundai A-League 2010 Finals Series.

Strategic Planning Day

Dear Colleagues,

On behalf of North Coast Football I would like to invite you to attend a Strategic Planning Day to be held at the Woolgoolga Bowling Club on Sunday 18th October 2009 from 10:00am to 4:00pm.

The purpose of the day is to provide members of our local football fraternity the opportunity to have input in the development of a guiding document, which we hope will enable us to better manage football throughout our Zone.

Given the many changes that have been thrust upon us in recent years by FFA and NNSWF, combined with a continual need to become more professional in our management processes, NCF have elected to develop a strategic approach as to how we establish priorities to better serve the needs of our membership.

We want this plan to reflect the thoughts, feelings, ideas and wants of our stakeholders and we ask for your support in its development.

Ideally we would like to see each NCFZ club provide two members, maybe the President and one other. We are also seeking input from Standing Committee members and the NCF Referees Association. Representatives from Northern NSW Football will also be attending.

NCF will provide a light lunch, and refreshments throughout the day and this will be a unique opportunity to become a part of the future direction of football in Northern New South Wales.

Looking forward to seeing you on 18th October.

Mariners Youth victorious in tough battle with NCF seniors

The Central Coast Mariners Youth team defeated North Coast Football seniors 5-0 on Sunday at Novotel Pacific Bay Resort to bring to an end their short tour of Coffs Harbour. Sunday's victory was on top of their 9-0 defeat of NCFZ 21 years team on Friday night at BCU International Stadium.

Despite the one sided score line, NCF took the game to the Mariners and only dropped off the pace for 10 minutes after half time when three quick goals were scored. That aside, NCF caused plenty of uncomfortable moments for the Mariners and looked to have a goal or two in them, but just could not finish off several promising raids.

The match started in warm conditions, a factor which was to take its toll on both teams, but the pace was quick and NCF was determined to stretch the Mariners defence as much as possible.

NCF began with a front three of Ben Mackay, Brady Parker and Fraser Robinson; a strike force sure to test any backline, but it was the man at the back, Josh Harrigan, who was called into action first. After 10 minutes of frantic opening play, the Mariners fired their first bullet of the day toward the NCF goal. Harrigan leapt into action with a near post save which resulted in a corner.

The first goal came in the 13th minute after the Mariners moved the ball down the left side, something the crowd was to become quite accustomed to. The inevitable cross to the centre was met with a first time volley. It struck the left upright and bounced in for a 1-0 lead.

This, however, was not to be the formula for the rest of the half. In fact the score remained there until the break as NCF threw everything at the Mariners and were unlucky not to have restored parity.

Two minutes after the goal, Nathan Silvy had NCF's first chance to get square with a cracking shot which, unfortunately, went straight to the Mariners’ keeper.

A minute after, the ball was back up the other end with the Mariners given a direct free kick 25 metres out. Not for the last time, the Mariners missed the target with their shot.

With the game only quarter of an hour old, NCF cracked open the Mariners' defence with a lovely through ball for Ben Mackay to latch onto. Mackay turned the ball to the right ready to pull the trigger, but stumbled and fluffed his shot.

It was 10 minutes before Mackay got another shot, but it brought the crowd to its feet. NCF was awarded a direct free kick after the Mariners were caught holding in defence to the left of the penalty area. Mackay took the kick by passing it along the ground to Brady Parker who miss hit his first time shot. The ball fell back to Mackay to hit his shot well, but it was saved brilliantly by the Mariners' keeper.

On the half hour mark the Mariners looked certain to add to their score when deft play finally got the ball around Wade Parker who was proving rock solid. The shot was again saved by Harrigan, but the rebound fell to the feet of the visitors who shot it into the post.

Minutes later NCF was at it again as Nathan Silvy put Ben Mackay through for a crack at the Mariners goal. His left foot chip, however, floated harmlessly wide.

Five minutes before the break, a beautiful one-two by the Mariners brought them one on one with Harrigan between the posts again. Again Harrigan was equal to the task.

The last play of the half brought NCF close to an equalizer. Brady Parker, with the ball at his feet on the left side, fired a bullet pass to Fraser Robinson on the right side of the field. Its pinpoint accuracy was matched by Robinson's first time volley towards the far post. Mackay stretched forward to meet the cross, but fell centimetres short.

The second half started with great promise for NCF. Buoyed by their first half performance, the locals looked certain find the back of the net. That was hardly the plan for the Mariners and their coach must have used the half time break to explain that in detail because the Mariners scored three goals in the first 14 minutes to effectively kill the game off.

The first was a neat header made easier by loose marking, the second came as a defensive pass was intercepted and the third came after a Mariners fullback was left free to run right through the midfield until he was just outside the penalty area. His shot was drilled low and toward the left post, bouncing just in front of the outstretched keeper's arm. 4-0 right on the hour.

At this point NCF Coach Richard Evans gave Brady Parker a rest and brought on Kodjo Adjassou who had caused plenty of problems for the Mariners on Friday night and he immediately set about doing much the same here.

Fraser Robinson dropped back to right midfield and began feeding the ball down the right flank. Straight away he found Kodjo free in space. In a matter of seconds Kodjo was at the top of the penalty area and the trigger was pulled. Only an acrobatic save kept NCF scoreless.

Just three minutes later, the Mariners scored their fifth and final goal. As he so often did, Harrigan made an initial save, diving to his left. The deflection again fell to the Mariners who easily found the back of the net.

In the last 15 minutes of the match, it was end to end with NCF threatening on several occasions, but falling just short of the mark. On one occasion, the Mariners' keeper was forced into a foot race to the ball 10 metres outside his penalty area. His slide tackle clearance did the job, but it was a nervous moment for the visitors.

Harrigan was rewarded with an early end to his match which gave Josh Wiseman the final 10 minutes of the match. He made an important contribution even at this late stage, most notably after a Mariners' corner was met with a header which flew straight to his gloves.

Wiseman was beaten once in the late stages of the match after typically clever build up by the Mariners' midfield. This time, however, just as the ball looked to be goal-bound, Wade Parker intercepted it and turned it away from the danger zone.

The Mariners did not insult their opposition by easing off in the late stages of the match. Wiseman was called on to make three more saves in the last few minutes. One flew straight to him and presented no problems. The next came quicker and forced Wiseman to use his feet as he balanced himself for the save. The third was from a direct free kick, the last of the match, which was situated to the left of the penalty area. It flew straight into his safe hands.

There was time for one final play for NCF. Robinson again put the ball through on the right, this time to Matt Hughes who got to the top of the penalty area. His shot was on target but lacked the sting needed to beat the solid Mariners' keeper.

So at full time the score was 5-0 to the Central Coast Mariners; deserved winners on a hot day against a committed NCF senior rep team.

It was a shame NCF did not score a goal in this match because they deserved one. They constantly caused problems for the Mariners' defence who usually had plenty of time but found themselves in several situations where they were not in control of the play.

The match was also a fitting send off for Ben Mackay who was given a warm round of applause as he was replaced with a minute to go.

Thanks go to the Central Coast Mariners for their commitment and sportsmanship over the two games and to Coffs Harbour City Council for their sponsorship of the event. Perhaps this will grow into an annual event leading to the senior A-League team putting Coffs Harbour on their calendar.

4 NCF boys selected into U13 Nthn NSW State Rep Squad

Photo: Front Left: Je Jacobs (Boambee Bombers) - Front Right: Rees Duncan Jr (Woolgoolga Dolphins) - Rear Left: Zack Smith (Woolgoolga Dolphins) - Rear Right: Noah Bedford (Urunga Raiders)

After many rigorous years of training, games, travelling and selection camps and trials these 4 boys have successfully been identified and selected into the U13 Nthn NSW State rep squad.

They play in a State Youth League competition with their North Coast Football squad which selects players from Grafton to Macksville to play in a competition between squads from Nthn Inland, NthCoast, MidNth Coast, Newcastle, Macquarie and the Hunter, with games played every third weekend.

After the last round of selection trials the boys were successful in being selected in the Nthn NSW State rep squad to play a series of games against a Newcastle region based Rep squad and teams from the ACT and interstate in a tournament in Newcastle in the October School Holidays.

During the July holiday break the boys are at Lennox Head for an intensive training camp with the rest of the Nthn squad preparing for the October titles.

As well as this commitment the boys are also training two nights a week with Nth coast football. They also train and play local club football and any school based games on top of that again. From this you can gather that the commitment from the boys as well as parents is immense with the ultimate goal being success at the highest level possible.

Presentation Night Update

We have been informed that some of our clubs are under the impression that next weekends NCF Presentation Night (Saturday 26th September) is for 1st Div Clubs only. THIS IS TOTALLY WRONG.

The Presentation night is for all 23 NCFZ clubs and also for all representative teams, players and supporters.
It is a way of saying thank you to all those who have helped run your club and given up their time throughout the year.

Please open up the invitations to anyone who may like to attend or deserves a ticket due to their work load.

The response to date for tickets has been very disappointing and if we can't get sufficient people there then the future of this annual event is in jeopardy.

It will be an excellent night with presentations to players, referees, clubs and our young representative players. Combined with this opportunity to celebrate the season we will also have the Central Coast Mariners Youth Team attending - this team contains some future Socceroos.

Ideally we expect about 15 - 20 people from each club to attend so once again I ask you to circulate this information around your club and help boost the numbers... otherwise the value of holding this event will be reviewed.

Looking forward to seeing you all there, don't forget... IT IS YOUR NIGHT.

Grand Finals Information

As we prepare for this weeks Grand Finals there are some requests and Information that I hope will help make the weekend a success, particularly if you have teams playing this weekend.

Firstly, once again, NCF will have to charge a small entry fee for ALL those attending the grand finals, this includes players, parents, supporters, referees, coaches, managers, media, NCF Staff etc.

The reason for this is to cover the costs we incur staging the event at such an excellent venue.

Security, 'user pays' police officers, referees fees, first aid officers, trophies, combined with stadium hire and many other expenses all place a massive demand on our finances so the Board of Management have once again set the entry fee at $5 for adults and $2 for children (under 18) on Saturday for senior games and $2 for adults and children free on Sunday at the Junior finals.

Can all clubs that have teams playing on Saturday and Sunday please provide us with the names and mobile phone numbers of two volunteers who can help out on the day? We will have representatives from the Senior and the Junior Standing Committees and the NCF Board of Management will be there but we will need extra help so please offer some assistance. I promise you will not miss watching your teams play but if you can help out either side of that it will be very much appreciated by NCF (that's Ros and me).

Terry Allen our intrepid media officer will be on hand to take photos during both days and there will be an opportunity for parents to take team photos at the marquee where the presentations will be made after each game. Terry will also be the ground announcer and if teams can provide him with a typed team sheet with corresponding players numbers he will read out the names of the players as they enter the field.

Each team will be allocated a changing room and their team name will be on the changing room door. Field 1 is the Northern end and field 2 the southern. Managers can sign on their teams on and get the match cards in the office (near the announcers box). Please ensure your teams are signed on and ready 15 mins before kicks off time.

All kick off times and field allocations are on the website and (free) match programs will be available upon entry.

North Coast Football would like to wish all clubs the very best of luck this weekend and hope that all games are played in the spirit of fun and good sportsmanship and may the best team win.

Finally, please don't forget that the weekend after next (after the grand finals) we will host the Central Coast Mariners who are playing against NCF's Represenative Youth and Senior teams on Friday evening at the Int. Stadium 7:00pm and on Sunday at 2:00pm at Pacific Bay Resorts Football Fields. Also on Saturday we will hold the Junior Zone Championships at the International Stadium and the NCFZ Presentation evening later that day at 6:30pm at the CEX Club... tickets are still available.

FFA National Facilities Audit

FFA are conducting a National Facilities Audit (NFA) which all registered clubs across Australia will take part in. This will take the form of an online questionnaire that clubs will simply receive an email, follow a link, register their club and complete an online questionnaire.

This process is being conducted in order to evaluate and analyze every football facility currently used across Australia. The audit its self is a strategic tool that will contribute to football development at all levels. The objectives of this audit are to:

Determine the facility landscape supporting football participation and development

Identify priority areas based on football participation and facility utilization.

Develop government engagement strategies based on future facility requirements.

Better understand the quality and usage patterns of grassroots football facilities.

Determine the degree to which current facilities are meeting current and future demand.

Another aspect of the National Facilities Audit is to identify facilities that could support Australia's bid to host either the 2018 or 2022 world cup.

There are a number of benefits to individual clubs that will come from this NFA. These include:

Creating Facility data records

Empowering decision makers

Strengthen facility partnerships with Zones, NNSW and FFA

Strengthen local government relationships

Maximize grant opportunities

Direct involvement with FFA's FIFA World Cup Bid.

The NFA will be rolled out across Northern NSW Football over the next month or two.

Please take the time to read the two documents below as they will explain in more detail the process of the roll out and how clubs will complete the survey.

Central Coast Mariners to send Youth team to Coffs Harbour

Click here for Central Coast Mariners North Coast Football is pleased to announce an upcoming tour by the Central Coast Mariners Youth team in the last week of September.

The Mariners will be spending three days in Coffs Harbour despite the Youth season only kicking off two weeks prior.

The Mariners Youth team, preparing for the second season of the A-League Youth competition, has a bye on the last weekend of September and is therefore more than happy to drive a few hours north to Coffs Harbour for two matches against a NCF selection.

The Central Coast Mariners deal was struck thanks to the input of main sponsor Coffs Harbour City Council and Novotel Pacific Bay Resort whose first class training camp facilities the Mariners will use during their stay.

The Mariners Youth will play two matches; the first is against a NCF 21 years Youth Team on the evening of Friday September 25th, 7pm at BCU International Stadium. The second match is against a senior NCF representative team on the afternoon of Sunday 27th. For this match, North Coast Football will assemble a rep team featuring the cream of its current 1st division playing talent.

In addition, the young Mariners will present medals at the NCF junior zone championships at BCU International Stadium where the Premiers from the Coffs Harbour and Clarence competitions go head to head in a one off match for zone supremacy.

On the evening of Saturday September 26th, the players will be special guests at North Coast Football's end of year Zone Presentation night at CEX in Coffs Harbour.

It is hoped by establishing a relationship with the Central Coast Mariners, North Coast Football and Coffs Harbour City Council may entice the Mariners' senior A-League team to schedule a match at BCU International Stadium in the near future.

SYL squads go out with a bang

North Coast Football's four junior representative teams, all of which play in the State Youth League, have ended their season in perfection. The squads travelled to Armidale for their final matches of the season against their counterparts from Northern Inland and in doing so kept the opposition scoreless.

The 13's boys team, coached by Al Courtenay, comfortably won their match 4-0 with goals from Rees Duncan and Zack Smith.

The 14 years squad, coached by Jeff Hughes, beat the locals 2-0. Goal scorers were Jerry Wish-Wilson and Riley Dillon.

The 15's, coached by Richard Evans, had the narrowest win of the day; 1-0 in a tight encounter. A goal to Thomas Gardiner proved the difference.

The 15's girls, also coached by Richard Evans, had a 3-0 win with a double to Keira Plumbe and one to Jess Gunning.

Our congratulations to all players their coaches and parents for dedication to a long season of training and travel. What a great way to end the year.

2009 Champion of Champions

Some people have been in contact with the NCF office regarding NCF inability to nominate any of our clubs for the 2009 Football NSW Champion of Champions competition.

NCF would like to mention to those who are dissapopinted that the CoC is managed by a different State Body (Football NSW) to ours - we come under the auspice of NNSW Football. Consequently our draw is compiled to meet the needs of our domestic competition. Our NCF clubs need 20 weeks of competitive football - 18 games and two wet weather for seniors and 18 weeks plus two school holidays for juniors.

The grand finals can only be played at the BCU Int. Stadium when it is available to us, this year that is 19th & 20th September, so we counted back from then (allowing for Easter this year).

Please be assured it was not a deliberate action by NCF but one created by necessity and draw restrictions.

For some reason that is unbeknown to us, Football NSW have finished their competitive rounds early this year and obviously they did not schedule their domestic competition with the needs of other State bodies in mind, why should they?

NCF are also governed by other fixture schedule issues, such as ground availability. All NCFZ clubs use council grounds and we only have use of them from the first week in April to the last week in September. Yet another factor we must take into consideration when scheduling the domestic competition.

I know this will do little to counter the disappointment some teams will feel at not being able to revenge past losses or enhance previous positive experiences but we are working with both State bodies to coordinate such events.

Incidentally, NNSW Football are hoping to implement their own Champion of Champions in 2010. We will work on encouraging both State competitions to unite.

One week to go!

North Coast Football has played its penultimate round of the regular season and it has confirmed a few more places in the final four of both the men's & women's competitions, but has left some issues hanging in the balance until the final round this weekend.

Men's 1st division
With Coffs United wrapping up the premiership in Round 16, Round 17 became about jostling for the right to play the Lions and the right to host the 3rd vs 4th placed match.

Sawtell Scorpions hit form in the clash with Maclean Bobcats on Saturday, however their 1-1 draw, which may have frustrated Maclean and showed everyone what Sawty can do, was not enough to bridge the gap to the top four and the Scorpions must now play the last round knowing they cannot make the finals.

The point for Maclean meant they have secured 2nd spot and can think about the trip to the Den in a fortnight for the major semi-final against the Lions.

Third place has been secured by Urunga Raiders who started the season brilliantly before getting the hiccups in a couple of games, then regaining their composure towards the end. Given their record against Coffs this year, the Raiders might be hoping to face them in the preliminary final. In the four games the Raiders have played against Coffs United and Maclean this year, three were a draw with only the loss to Maclean playing on their minds.

Just who Urunga will play is still a mystery; it could be one of three teams. Coffs Tigers have the edge here with a final round match against Orara Valley. The Tigers will want to win handsomely to get some momentum heading into the finals, but if they lose, Boambee Bombers could sneak in to fourth. If that happens, Boambee & Urunga will be playing two weeks in a row; once this weekend to round out the regular season and, if Boambee wins, in the minor semi-final the week after. However, the Tigers have their destiny in their own hands at this point & are odds on to go through. And don't forget the 7-1 drubbing the Tigers gave Urunga earlier in the year to even up what happened on Saturday. This would be a finals match to savour.

Woolgoolga Wolves are the only other team with a mathematical chance of making the four, but they need some minor miracles. Firstly they have to beat Coffs United Lions by about eight goals and hope the Tigers lose to Orara Valley as well as Boambee gaining no more than a point from the Urunga match. Some obstacles are just too great to overcome and Woopi faces that kind here.

Relegation
In the relegation battle, it's looking like Westlawn Tigers will again face the axe, but that is by no means a done deal. Beaten by arch rivals Orara Valley on Saturday, Westlawn must now overcome Sawtell Scorpions and trust Coffs Tigers to win at the Valley. Westlawn's goal difference is better by far so if Westlawn wins & Orara loses this weekend, it will be Orara who drops out of first division.

Promotion
Congratulations to Yamba whose victory over Sawtell on Saturday secured the men's 2nd division Premiership and therefore guarantees the Breakers a place in North Coast Football's 1st division competition next year. Yamba has only lost once this season and has been a cut above the rest, but can they cut it in the big time? We will know next year, but in the meantime Yamba must prepare to put the Championship icing on the cake and get to work recruiting a squad which can withstand the rigours of 1st division competition.

Women's 1st division
The news that Boambee Eagles have forfeited their Round 9 clash with Urunga (which was to be played Tuesday night) has put the Raiders a whisker away from another Premiership. The Raiders look likely to have a great run at the canteen come finals time with a home game for both the men & the women.

The Raiders, having not been beaten this season, sit two points above Coffs United Lionesses and if form continues according to the script, the Raiders will wrap up the Premiership this weekend. These two rivals will again fight out the major semi-final with only the venue to be decided. The Raiders take on Boambee, who have only pride to play for now, while the Lionesses have to face Woolgoolga Wildcats who have plenty to play for.

The Wildcats want a home semi as well and they sit level on competition points with arch-rivals Corindi. Only goal difference puts Woopi ahead at this point and the Breakers have been steadily closing in from all sides over the past few weeks, capped off by a solid win in their head to head clash last week.

The Wildcats will have a 'win at all cost' attitude going into the game with the Lionesses knowing victory would mean Corindi would have to beat Sawtell by six goals plus however many goals Woopi puts past the Lionesses. Putting any goals past the Lionesses is not easy - they have conceded less than one per game this year - but Woopi did beat them last time they met, so they will be confident.

One round to go
So it's one match to go for Sawtell, Northern Storm, Orara Valley & Westlawn in the men's competition and Boambee, Sawtell, Northern Storm, Coffs Tigers & South Services in the women's competition. And only one of the three battling for fourth in the men's (Coffs Tigers, Boambee and Woopi) will carry on, sending the other packing for the year as well.

Looks like a great weekend ahead. See you on the pitch!

Local trio off to China

Jerry Whish-Wilson, Aidan Whish-Wilson and Tom Gardiner are packing their bags for a football tour of China in October

Three boys, who play in the North Coast Football representative teams contesting the Regional Championships, are to take part in a ten day, five game tour of China in October where they will join other players from Western NSW in an under 14 squad.

The team will play four games in Beijing and one in Shanghai against professional football schools and junior teams from professional clubs.

The teams they will face include the "San Gao" Football school, the under 14's from "Beijing Guoan" who play in the "C" League, the Beijing Muslim school and the Chaoyang Football school.

The "San Gao" school is probably the most famous in China. In Chinese San means 'three' and Gao means 'high' so it is the three highs; high academic ability, high behavioural ability and a high football ability which are the criteria for selection.

Photo: (left to right) Jerry Whish-Wilson, Aidan Whish-Wilson and Tom Gardiner

But the tour is not just about football. The boys, who will be accompanied by their families, will also do some sight-seeing at the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace and Tianamen Square high on the list.

North Coast Football is also planning to send its own under 14 squad to China on a similar trip next year, so start saving and watch this space for details!

Coffs United Lions win men's premiership

The stranglehold Coffs City United has on the men's 1st division competition has earned another accolade with the team once again taking the premiership with weeks to spare.

When the fulltime whistle blew on Saturday night, Coffs City United had defeated cross town rivals, Coffs Coast Tigers, and put themselves in an unreachable position at the top of the ladder. The Lions are therefore Premiers for 2009.

This means the Lions will receive a home ground advantage for their Grand Final qualification match in the first week of the finals series (commencing first weekend in September). At this stage, that match is shaping up as a replay of last year's showdown with Maclean Bobcats.

In fact, the two recent rivals are ending the season in remarkably similar fashion to 2008. The only difference is the Lions, having not lost so far, are on track to hit 50 competition points (which would be 3 more than last year) and Maclean could put themselves 3 points ahead of last year with only three losses.

However, Urunga is still in with a mathematical chance of taking second spot, but it will depend on Maclean dropping their bundle in the last two rounds, which does not seem likely at all.

The battle for fourth is still too close to call with Coffs Tigers and Boambee the main contenders, however Boambee has a horror finish to the year with matches against the undefeated Lions and Urunga to end with. Woolgoolga and Sawtell need everyone else to stop winning immediately if they are to get a sniff.

Relegation
Northern Storm celebrated a well deserved win at Boambee yesterday which has almost certainly relieved them of the relegation threat. They go to 10 competition points with Orara and Westlawn five behind and only six more points on offer.

Just like last year, these two will fight till the bitter end to avoid relegation and they play each on Saturday in a match certain to have far reaching implications. Neither of them wants another draw.

Promotion
In 2nd division, Yamba has one hand on the promotion spot having earned a come from behind 2-2 draw with nearest rivals Nambucca Heads. Yamba, five points in front with two rounds to play plus one catch up match, has not tasted top flight action with North Coast Football so far, but Nambucca has as part of Valley United a few seasons back.

One of these two will go through to 1st division next year and they could even see each other again in the Grand Final, although Sawtell will have something to say about that.

Women's 1st division
In the women's competition, things are not so clear cut. Urunga Raiders are still in pole position, just one point behind Coffs United but with a game in hand. That extra match is against Boambee and will be played this Sunday afternoon at Urunga. Urunga will also play Coffs Tigers this Saturday and Boambee once again in the last round.

Coffs United Lionesses have a slightly tougher assignment with only two matches remaining; at home to Boambee and a trip to Woolgoolga to finish.

Woolgoolga Wildcats sit in third position after getting the wobbles in recent weeks, however they face fourth placed Corindi on Tuesday night and will go six points clear with only two to play with a win at High Street in that midweek fixture. Should Corindi win, which is a distinct possibility considering how well they are playing at the moment, it will be all square between the close rivals going into the last two matches.

Champion of Champions unavailable
One disappointing piece of news for local teams is that the statewide Champion of Champions competition, which North Coast Football teams normally enter post-season, is unavailable to them due to its early kick off this year.

The Champion of Champions gets underway on the first weekend of September, coinciding with the first weekend of NCF finals. Organisers were unable to delay the competition until NCF teams were available at the end of September.

However, NCF teams will still play their zone championships on September 26th and can look forward to a competition similar to the Champion of Champions next year run by Northern NSW.

Referees Meeting with NCF Management

Below is an extract of details / recommendations from a very positive meeting held last Wednesday between the North Coast Football Referees Association, NCF Management and various other interested parties from the local football community.

North Coast Football will be conducting a Strategic Planning Day to be held on 18th October 2009 at the Woolgoolga Bowling Club. All members of the football community will be encouraged to attend. (more details will be distributed nearer the day) It is hoped that the details / recommendations below will be a valuable tool for that planning day.

After a brief introduction from the Chairman, Chris Eddy, there was general discussion on various refereeing and club related issues. Many opinions were voiced on matters pertaining to;

Referee Appointments

Recruitment and Retention of Referees

Training/Coaching of Referees

Referees Payments

Clubs commitment to educating their players/coaches on rules of the game.

Clubs commitment in assisting in the recruitment and promotion of refereeing

At the conclusion of the meeting various recommendations were tabled as follows:

North Coast Football Referees Association (NCFRA) in partnership with North Coast Football (NCF) will employ a part time Referees Administrator for the 2010 season. This person will coordinate and develop the referees' appointments and other duties to be advised. The NCFRA will provide a Job description/duty statement and the position will be advertised in the coming months.

North Coast Football Referees Association (NCFRA) in partnership with North Coast Football (NCF) will employ a part time Referees Coach for the 2010 season. This person will coordinate referees' training/coaching and other duties to be advised. The NCFRA will provide a Job description/duty statement and the position will be advertised in the coming months.

Every effort will be made in the 2010 season to produce referee appointments in advance. It was agreed that senior appointments may be able to be done for the year and junior appointments done four weeks in advance. All appointments will be displayed on the referees and NCF Websites.

Clubs and NCFZ Management must take more responsibility in the recruitment and promotion of refereeing. Clubs will be encouraged to subsidise the fees/uniform costs for new junior referees.

Clubs to provide a percentage of referees in relation to their number of registered players. (E.g. one referee for every two teams).

Clubs to keep a list of all their registered referees.

Clubs will be requested to invite referees to their training nights to discuss refereeing issues/rules with players and coaches. It is anticipated that this approach may reduce the abuse and inappropriate behavior emanating from some players and coaches/managers from the technical area.

While the NCFZ Competition Rules allow for 'club referees' to be used when there are no appointed referees, clubs will be formally warned that referees who are not FFA registered must not referee in their uniform as they are not covered by insurance. Concerns were raised that some clubs are still actively encouraging cash payments on the day via the canteen.

The Competition draw will be compiled with consideration given to the appointment/provision of referees. For example, in the Clarence area the two Clubs playing in 1st division games will have one team at home and the other playing away each weekend wherever possible.

To assist with referee shortages all junior games are played on Saturdays and seniors play on Sundays.

No games kick off after 5pm.

While some of these recommendations may be controversial and will obviously not meet with the approval of all club officials, parents, players and supporters, the feeling at the meeting was very positive and there was a obvious understanding that these issues above can only be solved if we all work together and support each other.

North Coast Football Referees Association and North Coast Football management would like to thank all those who gave their time and commitment to improving our game and working towards developing a more professional approach.

Urunga Small Sided Football 'HUB' Day

A GREAT DAY FOR SMALL SIDED FOOTBALL AT URUNGA

There was lots of smiles at Urunga Football Club on Saturday 25 Jul 09 when the club hosted a very successful 'HUB' day for young soccer players from Dorrigo, Bellingen, Nambucca Heads, Macksville, and Urunga.

The wonderful weekend weather provided perfect conditions for the 20 teams made up of 100 children, aged 6, 7 and 8, to develop their football skills and have lots of fun.

Last year saw the introduction of Small-Sided Football (SSF) within the North Coast area. This form of soccer is designed to encourage skills development by giving children more contact with the ball and more actual experience of the play. Of course, this also adds to their enjoyment of the game.

This is the second year that Urunga has played host to a SSF 'HUB' day for local clubs and, thanks to the support of parents, team leaders and club volunteers there were smiles all around. The club expresses their thanks to all the children and parents who made the effort to take part in this HUB day.

Two Beers with Greeny & Les Murray

Les Murray - Photo courtesy of Coffs Coast Advocate Our thanks to Coffs Coast Advocate for allowing NCF to place this article, which was published Sat 18th July 2009 in the "Two Beers with Greeny column".

BG: Firstly Les why has Coffs Harbour been so lucky to have you in town this week?

LM: Well I wanted to check in with the women's Youth Nationals as you know as I've never actually seen a tournament here even though there have been quite a few, even the Socceroos played here so I wanted to check it out and do a bit of background research on the quality of the football played by the girls and how things are coming along in our technical development area.

BG: When you were watching I noticed that you had your camera with you. You weren't doing any scouting for any clubs were you?

LM: No, no, I don't do that sort of thing. I wish I did.

I just brought the camera just in case I need some vision for whatever I might do with this with SBS but there was no special assignment though.

BG: Having watched the action how do you find the rate of improvement within football's junior ranks?

LM: Well it's visible. It's slow but it's visible.

As you may or may not know I wasn't a big fan of then Australian development system particularly with the technical side for younger players for both boys and girls and by that I mean by the age of 15 or 16.

It's been pretty poor actually but that's now changing with the new technical director putting a new agenda into play, a new curriculum, a new philosophy and I think that things are starting to improve.

BG: What changes needed to be made?

LM: We need to basically recognise and understand that ball technique is fundamental to becoming a good footballer, a winning footballer.

We've been neglecting that, our culture has been neglecting that.

The Australian culture in football has been all about strength and speed and a winning mentality even at young ages. People just didn't understand that what you’ve got to learn when you're a tiny tot and even when you're a young teenager is basically ball skills.

That has been neglected and it is evident even among our senior Socceroos today and that's where the rest of the world is ahead of Australia and we have to simply change our culture.

The so-called 'Dutch Mafia' which is now at the top end of Australia's technical development apparatus are correcting that or are attempting to correct that. It's all about winning which is nonsense.

Even at 15 or even at 17 like the girls that we saw today (Thursday), winning is not important. It's learning that is important.

We're developing players and my beef with the junior competitions and the junior tournaments is that there have been coaches and parents who affect the players who have been all about winning. It's not about winning. You can start winning when you're 20 or 21 and you're a professional footballer.

BG: Where does the new message come from? Is there something that the Socceroos or the Matildas can do?

LM: I think it is just a lack of education in football.

We are not traditionally a football country, so we've got over a million players and more than half a million junior players but the parents and very often the coaches are not from the ranks of football. They're innocent in this but they simply don't know that when you send out a bunch of six year-olds onto the park or even 7, 8, 9, 10 year-olds, it's not about winning, it's about enjoying themselves and about them learning to play.

If you force young players to try to win then they're not going to learn because learning is not the priority and it should be.

BG: How much difference does it make to the young juniors now that they've got a national side to look up to in both the men's and women's game?

LM: Well the national teams are iconic sources of aspiration for all players and it's very important that they retain their iconic status, they are successful and they are marketed and well supported but the kids need to learn to play the way they do ultimately. And that is by them being taught the right things. That's why the small-sided games have been brought in, which is about touching the ball as often as possible and making short passes, not long ones and kicking the leather off the ball and not caring about points tables or any of that nonsense.

BG: One of my main concerns about the national team and the next generation isn't about South Africa but it's actually about Brazil in 2014 and the fact that the national team is an aging group and the next generation of players doesn't appear to be as strong as the current group. What are your thoughts?

LM: I agree. I think the next tier is not as good. I think the tier after that I can see some brilliant young players coming through but at a much younger bracket. I'm talking about a teenage age bracket now but the new tier that is coming just behind the boys that played in 2006, I'm not over excited by it to be perfectly honest.

BG: While on the subject of South Africa next year, have you already got your bags packed? Are you that excited?

LM: I haven't quite got my bags packed but I'm looking towards the suitcases. I'm very excited though, it's going to be a great tournament.

BG: Simply the fact that the Socceroos played together so often after moving into Asia made a world of difference didn't it?

LM: Well it did in many ways and that was one of them. We had 14 meaningful qualifying games as opposed to two meaningful qualifying games in the previous era. So that made a hell of a difference in terms of the team getting cohesion and becoming a family unit but also in revenue terms and marketing terms and so on.

It was a master stroke for us to be merged into Asia.

BG: Looking forward to the World Cup next year, how do you rate the team's chances of making it through again to the round of 16 or even further?

LM: The best time to answer that is when we see the draw in December.

I think it is going to be tough. Our team is good but I don't know if it's necessarily better than it was in 2006. Most of the players will be four years older so it's not going to be easy.

The other thing that will make it tough is that the nobody will be underestimating us because we've already achieved something and we're a dangerous opponent, everybody knows that now.

But things are possible. We just saw the United States make the final of the Confederations Cup which was an enormous achievement.

BG: And they nearly won it.

LM: That's right and I think we have a better team than they have so who knows?

Our natural aim should be to do one better than the previous time and Pim Verbeek has admitted that so we should be aiming for at least a quarter final place.

BG: If we get there that would be an awesome ride. Les thanks very much for your time and hopefully we see you back in Coffs Harbour more often.

LM: Thanks mate, all the best to you.

Local ref in action at National Championships

Amanda Riley - Photo courtesy of Terry Allen
The National Championships of girls' football, currently being held in Coffs Harbour, is the pinnacle of the sport for junior female players, but it is also a major stepping stone for young referees.

While the matches are being played, the referees are being watched by Football Federation Australia so the next crop of whistle blowers can be properly identified and trained for elite competition.

Only one local referee has been selected for duty at the National Championships; Amanda Riley. Amanda is a 17 year old who plays with the Northern Storm Cyclones, but who has also been learning her trade as a referee in local competition.

Last year, Amanda was one of five local referees chosen to attend the annual Referees' Development Camp at Armidale where she was taught the finer points of the job by State and National referees. It also put her in the mix when selectors sat down to choose their top officials for the National Championships.

Amanda hit the ground running on Saturday, performing as Assistant Referee in the first match of the tournament; Tasmania vs Football West in the 15's competition.

Each referee at the National Championships this week will be given as least two games in the centre as well as several as assistant with some rewarded for their efforts with the finals matches this weekend.

Countdown for FFA girls

SHOWCASE: Local soccer stars (from left) Kellie Langham, Sarah Marsen, Jasmin Courtenay and Georgia Burt - Photo courtesy of Coffs Coast Advocate Report courtesy of: Coffs Coast Advocate

It's the showcase for the future of Australian women's football and it kicks off in Coffs Harbour this Saturday.

The Westfield National Youth Championships For Girls boasts the cream of junior female footballers from around Australia and will be conducted at BCU International Stadium at Coffs Harbour from Saturday July 11 to 18.

The national competition acts as a platform for local upcoming talent to showcase their skills in front of scouts for national squads and Westfield W-League clubs, as well as provide girls the opportunity to develop their abilities, while furthering career potential.

There are four Coffs Coast girls who will be showing their wares when competition gets underway.

Jasmin Courtenay (Woolgoolga) and Kellie Langham (Macksville) are in the under 15s squad while Sarah Marsden (Urunga/Dorrigo) and Georgia Burt (Coffs United) will be playing with the under 17s.

Hosted by Northern NSW Football at the Coffs Harbour venue since 2006, this year's event represents the commencement of a second three-year agreement giving Northern NSW Football the rights to host the prestigious event.

The second three-year term was granted by Football Federation Australia after glowing reports from all participating States as to the quality of the facilities and management of the tournament.

Coaches for the respective Northern NSW squads are Jason Aird for the Girls Under 15s and Kean Marshall for the Under 17s.

Among Aird's Under 15s team are three girls who were selected in the Under 14s Australian side which toured Vietnam in late June which is a demonstration of the sheer talent within the Northern NSW region. Adriana Jones, Isobel Cootes and Mikaela Howell have only just shaken off the jet lag after their return from the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Under 14 Girls - Festival of Football which was held in Ho Chi Minh City.

Aird is a keen advocate for supporting female talent among a sport that was traditionally dominated by males. "The amount of talent, particularly in a technical sense coming through our development programs like the Johnny Warren Academy and Emerging Athletes is a testament that Northern NSW are leading the way - particularly in the female game," he said.

While Marshall's Under 17s side includes three players from the NSW Institute of Sport, Hannah Brewer and Rhali Dobson played in the inaugural 2008-09 Westfield W-League season for the Newcastle Jets. "For the Under 17s, it is a great opportunity for the girls to showcase their talent so they can be identified for the Young Matildas and potentially an opportunity to play in the Westfield W-League," Marshall said.

At last year's Girl's Nationals, the Northern NSW Under 15s side placed fourth from ten sides while the Northern NSW Under 17s placed seventh.

Sawtell FC Junior Carnival Report

Sawtell FC Junior Carnival 2009

On Sunday 14th June, Toormina Oval came alive as more than 50 teams of young players in the under 6, under 7, under 8 and under 9 age divisions came together for a round robin style gala day.

The structure of the day was different from previous years, when all teams used to play off with eventual winners and losers of each age group. This year, in keeping with the Small Sided Football philosophy, there were no losers. Everyone played 6 games and at the end of the day ALL went home with a participation ribbon and a smile (and somewhat tired legs).

There is no doubt that this style of Gala Day was a success. It not only took the stress off the organisers in the official tent, it also allowed for families and coaches to relax and not count goals. Instead of competition, the huge crowd came together in a carnival atmosphere, with countless gazebos set up for picnics and resting areas between games.

With over 50 teams playing on 13 fields there was standing room only at some games, but there wasn't a grumble from anyone - the spectacle of all those happy children enjoying the fresh air and exercise kept everyone happy. Combine all that with the well stocked canteen for which 'Coleen's cafe' has been famous for many years, and you have a recipe for success.

Thanks goes to all those who assisted before and on the day. A special mention must be made of the tidy manner in which the fields were left - there was little if any litter to be picked up.

The organisers and volunteers who put in a very long day at the fields were all proud of the day and look forward to repeating in again in 2010.

Thank you to all the children who participated and to the adults who inspired the good sportsmanship.
(Thanks also to the weather gods who blessed us with a fine sunny day!)

Four local girls preparing for FFA National Championships
- UPDATED INFO

Jasmin Courtenay - Photo courtesy of Terry Allen The strength of football amongst females in North Coast Football Zone is evidenced again by this week's announcement that three locals have been selected in the Northern NSW team to play in the FFA National Championships for girls, being held in Coffs Harbour in July.

Sarah Marsden (Urunga Raiders), Jasmin Courtenay (Woolgoolga Wildcats) and Kellie Langham (Macksville) have each been named in a squad to compete in the tournament in which female players from every state in Australia vie for football supremacy.

Sarah Marsden is the only member of the trio to have played in the tournament last year. The 16 year old student at Coffs Harbour Christian Community High School played in the 15 years competition in 2008 and has now been picked in the 17 years squad for the upcoming event.

Jasmin Courtenay - Photo courtesy Terry Allen

"I loved the experience last year and I can only expect it will be just as good this time around," the Dorrigo teenager said. "All of the coaches for the W-League and Young Matildas will be there so we're all hoping to come under their notice. You never know what might come of it," Sarah added.

Sarah's Mum, Kate, has also been named Manager of the squad so the family will have a busy school holiday break.

Sarah Marsden - Photo courtesy of Terry Allen
Jasmin Courtenay, from Woolgoolga High, currently leads North Coast Football's Golden Boot competition in women's 1st division.

The Sandy Beach teenager plays for Woolgoolga Wildcats and will prove to be a deadly striker for the 15 years Northern NSW team.

Kellie Langham, a year 9 student at Macksville High, plays with the Macksville 14 years boys team and is in only her fourth year of competitive football.

"I was a bit overwhelmed when I heard my name read out," Kellie said. "I've only been playing four years and I've never been picked for anything like this so it was amazing," Kellie said.

Kellie Langham - Photo courtesy of Terry Allen
Kellie and Jasmin both attended selection trials at Armidale in April and will play in the same team while Sarah also attended the Armidale camp in January.

All were recently in Newcastle for training prior to the announcement of the final squads.

The Northern NSW 17 years team plays its first match against Northern Territory on Saturday afternoon (July 11th) while the 15's team has its first hit out against South Australia straight after.

The FFA National Youth Championships for girls will be played at BCU Stadium in Coffs Harbour from 11th to 18th July.

FFA announced last year that Coffs Harbour would host the event annually until 2011.

UPDATE: Georgia Burt added to 17 years Northern NSW team

Georgia Burt - Photo courtesy of Terry Allen 15 year old Georgia Burt has been added to the 17 years Northern NSW team to play in the National Championships girls football tournament in July after the withdrawal of a squad member.

Georgia, who is a year 10 student at Coffs Harbour High School, plays centre-mid for Coffs United 16 boys and the women's 1st division Lionesses.

Georgia was also a member of last year's Northern NSW 15 years team which made its way to the semi-finals of the tournament. Georgia was told over the phone last Friday that she had been added to the squad. That brings the total number of local girls playing in the tournament to four.

All four continue to play for the North Coast Representative side in the State Youth League as well as their weekly club sides.

Phil Payne

The Board and Management of North Coast Football would like to extend it sympathies to Phil Payne and wife Noella upon the death of their eldest son Carl.

Carl Payne, who lived in Newcastle, passed away suddenly last weekend at the age of 37 years.

Phil said today he and Noella were coping as well as can be expected under the circumstances and thanked everyone in the football community who have offered their condolences in recent days.

North Coast Football also recognises how difficult the events of the past week have been for Josh Payne, Phil & Noella's only surviving child, who for many years has refereed in the North Coast Football competition.

A Requiem Service will be held at St Augustine's Catholic Church at 10:00 AM Monday, 15th June, to be followed by interment at Karangi lawn cemetery. The Family will be holding his wake, at the Catholic Club, following the Service.

Police & NCF launch new initiative with African community

Kicking Cultural Goals

PHOTO: Richard Evans puts the players through a drill while Prime TV captures the action - Photo by Terry Allen
The Coffs/Clarence LAC is using Football, 'The World Game' as the vehicle to progress relationships with local African communities.

Detective Chief Inspector Jason Breton, in consultation with NCF and the Community Relations Commission are assisting by maintaining liaison with culturally diverse groups and persons from non English speaking backgrounds in our Community.

After being made aware of a group of young African men who mentor younger males and females whilst using football as the binding agent, Jason worked with the Operations Manager & Coaching Director of NCF to devise a program which should compliment the work of local African "John Paul" and other African males who participate in social football, then sit and speak about youth issues.

The project is initially designed to break barriers of communication. NCF has provided the equipment including a bag of footballs, bibs and marker cones while Football Manager Richard Evans is overseeing the training sessions so the program has a solid football outcome and is not simply a kick in the park.

PHOTO: Keeping the ball alive - Photo by Terry Allen

The goal is also to formalise these meetings slightly, without overt interference, by getting local Police to casually attend the training sessions so they can get to know the African community at a casual level and then offer them an insight to how the Police and the legal system protects them in Australia, which can be quite the opposite to their homeland experience.

"I can only imagine the perception some of these guys have of police and policing having experienced their early childhood. By kicking a few goals, we may be able to demonstrate that the interaction we seek locally is mutual respect and cooperation," DCI Breton said.

"In Africa the World Game is the only game and by using our local football network, our Police and Community stakeholders, we can assist these young people to become active members of our community and hopefully, our football scene," Mr Breton said.

NCFZ Operations Manager Bob Harris added, "These are talented young kids. Our current leading goal scorer in men's 1st Division is one of them and they can all look at him as a role model".

NCFZ Football Manager Richard Evans said, "Sport is the binding agent here and by providing some coaching on techniques and the rules of the game, hopefully some of the younger ones will join local clubs in 2010".

PHOTO: DCI Jason Breton knocks the ball backwards and forwards with John Paul - Photo by Terry Allen
The first meeting between everybody concerned was held last Friday at Maclean St, Coffs Harbour which is an official refugee settlement City. Around two dozen African young people turned up to meet Police and staff from North Coast Football. There were also workers from the various refugee support agencies and local High School teachers, all of whom made the afternoon fun, safe and enjoyable.

The afternoon began with Police, NCF staff and African young people introducing themselves, followed by a training session with NCF Football Manager Richard Evans.

Prime TV News brought along a camera to capture some of the session and saw wave after wave of talented African young people moving in and out of the training cones with the ball at their feet.

Then the gathered players, having warmed up, were split into teams for a full sized match. More than full sized actually, with around 15 per side playing in the fading light.

John Paul, who works with his fellow Africans as a teacher's aide in Orara High School, will keep all of the equipment and bring it to the York St playing fields every Friday afternoon at 4pm where the young people will gather (occasionally with Police who feel fit enough!) for regular games.

There is also a rumour the Police will form a team and challenge the Africans to a game of football later in the season. By the look of this first session, the Police have their work cut out.

Football Goss

More rain and floods washed out all North Coast Football games last weekend.

Here's an Aussie view of the final round of the English and Scottish Premier Football leagues.

High profile Aussies and their teams have mostly faired well. Tim Cahill's Everton held fifth place by beating Mark Schwarzer's Fullham - both teams qualified for European competition earning them kudos and extra funds. Honourary Aussie and Supercoach Guus Hiddink's reign over Chelsea finished with another win this time over Sunderland.

West Ham with Lucas Neill finished off his former team Middlesbrough sending 'Boro down to the English First division (Coca-cola Championship). Mark Viduka and Newcastle have struggled all season and are confirmed as relegated to First division.

Sheffield United has David Carney (ex Sydney FC) in First division and their final game on 26 May is a play-off with Burnley to decide if they hit the big time in the Premier league. Former Perth youngster, Rhys Williams will be hoping Burnley win as they're interested in signing him. (Update: Burnley won 1-0)

Sydney aren't missing coach Terry Butcher, his current team, Inverness, have just been relegated from the Scottish Premier League. Scott McDonald's Celtic came so close but couldn't catch Rangers on top of the Scottish Premier table.

A few of the A-League clubs are arranging for English football teams to come over for exhibition matches in our pre-season. Closest to us is a match between the new Gold Coast United and Fulham on July 8th at the Gold Coast. A chance for Aussies to see Schwarzer in action, live, as well as Gold Coast's marquee signing, Jason Culina.

Gold Coast United

V Fulham FC

July 8th

Skilled Stadium

Gold Coast

Football fans can now secure their seats for the first ever visit of a Barclays English Premier League club to the Gold Coast.

Gold Coast United will play their inaugural game at Skilled Park when they take on Barclays Premier League club Fulham on Wednesday 8 July (8.00pm kick off).

The Barclays Premier League is arguably the best and most popular league in the world, so the opportunity to see the team currently sitting seventh and featuring our very own Mark Schwarzer certainly makes this an event not to be missed.

Yamba FC have already organised a bus trip with families & juniors to attend the Gold Coast Utd -vs.- Fulham match. They have purchased 57 tickets for the trip (which have all been snapped by players & families already !) and they are travelling up by bus on the day.

This is a great idea and I am sure other NCF clubs could do likewise. How about it?
There are still tickets available and it would be great to have a large NCFZ presence at the game.

If you need any more info check out the GCU website www.goldcoastunited.com.au

Tickets are also available now from Ticketek, Ph: 132 849 or via: www.ticketek.com.au

NCF promotes RESPECT for Referees

North Coast Football is utilizing a British video to promote a new level of respect for referees across the zone in an effort to curb the increasing tendency for referees, especially young ones, to quit the game as a result of abuse.

It hasn't been identified as a particular problem in NCFZ except to say that this area is no different to any other which suffers from moments of sideline madness, usually from parents, and even worse, from players who cannot accept a referee's authority from time to time.

This is a world wide problem. The English FA has produced a new video to make its point. It stars actor Ray Winstone playing both the ugly parent and himself as narrator. You can view the video below...

This follows on from the FA's » Can We Have A Referee? campaign last year which featured, among others, England's national coach Fabio Capello. It showed what happens when there are no referees at all.

Football Federation Australia has not yet begun producing its own virals to get the point across, but it has shown it is deadly serious about the issue by issuing a series of directives to all clubs in the land.

In February this year, the FFA sent a uniform set of guidelines on disciplinary matters to all Australian football associations called the » National Disciplinary Regulations.

This document makes quite clear how serious offences against referees are. For example, any player found guilty of spitting at a referee, will now serve a mandatory 12 month suspension. This has come as quite a shock to a number of people who assume spitting at a ref is no more than a mark of contempt. It certainly is that, but now you will know just how big a mark that is.

And the new regulations extend further than just to referees. Recently a NCFZ 2nd division player was sent off for spitting at an opposition player. It came as quite a surprise to him that this offence now carries with it a six week suspension.

And the list goes on - five weeks for racial abuse (even if it is just one word); six weeks for "inciting a brawl" (not taking part it one, just inciting it); four weeks for an act of un-sportsmanlike conduct towards an official (that could include telling a linesman he needs glasses!)

Of course in the case of this last one, as with most of them, there will be an element of discretion on the part of the match officials when dealing with the offence. There is a jovial way to do things and an intimidatory way. No one wants to take the human interaction out of the game, but here is what we do want taken out; the abuse of referees which is so bad they quit the game.

Around a dozen new referees have just been handed their uniforms and whistle with the completion of the Coffs Harbour and Clarence based Referees Introductory courses. Let's hope they have long and successful careers. It's up to each of us to see that they do.

McDonald's Fast Feet Clinic a success

It just wouldn't be school holidays without the McDonald's Fast Feet Super Skills School Holiday Coaching Clinic and Toormina was the venue for the latest clinic during the second week of the holidays.

It didn't get off to a good start. Wet weather forced the cancellation of the very first day (Tuesday) creating disappointment for the young footballers and a dilemma for the organizers who had already taken registration money for all four days.

As a result, each child who registered for this clinic will be sent an invitation to the next clinic (July) where they can use their pre-paid clinic day. Alternatively, they will be able to fully register for the next clinic and only pay for three days instead of four.

The weather from Wednesday to Friday was perfect for football training and by the time it finally kicked off, both players and coaches were keen to have a run.

NCFZ Football Manager, Richard Evans, was joined by Michael Jackson, Rachael Oberlauter and Dave Curley for the three day clinic.

They put the boys and girls, all aged seven to thirteen, through a series of drills and practice matches; each one designed to hone their skills. No matter what standard they were when they arrived, the clinic sharpened their technique.

As the clinic wound up, Richard Evans said "It was a great success with all children having a ball and enjoying themselves whilst learning lots of new skills. Not a bad environment; learning and enjoyment!"

The final event was a barbeque lunch and the presentation of certificates. The next clinic will be held in the July school holidays.

Coaching Licence Subsidy

North Coast Football are committed to assisting all of our clubs to improve the overall standard of Coaching throughout our Zone.

Consequently the Board of Management have voted to provide a $50 PER CANDIDATE SUBSIDY off the total cost of $125 per candidate for a Junior Coaching Licence and a $50 SUBSIDY off the total cost of $175 per candidate Youth Coaching Licence for season 2009.

As we have mentioned before, we are fast approaching the time when ALL coaches must have formal coaching qualifications. This is a duty of care issue and clubs that get in early will not only secure the best coaching staff but save money with this generous subsidy.

NCF have already conducted a successful Junior Coaching Licence in Coffs Harbour, with 15 candidates, so it would be ideal if we could conduct another one in the Clarence area during the early part of the season.

The Junior Coaching Licence is conducted over two days so ideally it could be two consecutive Sundays with the Youth Coaching Licence being two consecutive weekends with the theory segment on the Friday evening before the course commences.

The DATES FOR THE YOUTH COACHING LICENCE are:

6th November 2009
- from 5.30pm to 8.30pm
at Sportz Central in Coffs Harbour

and then the practical component
on 7th, 8th, 14th and 15th November 2009
at Maclean Street in Coffs Harbour.

To enrol on the Youth Coaching Licence candidates must have completed a Junior Coaching Licence.

Wet Weather Catch Up Games

Given our frustration with the inclement weather last weekend please be aware that the only games from R1 that must be played are:

Mens 1st, Youth, 2nd div games
Womens 1st, 2nd and 3rd div games

These games are set down to be played on the first wet weather weekend 6th and 7th June however they can be played sooner if mutually agreeable by the clubs/teams involved. eg Some clubs have chosen to play on the Anzac day Sunday 26th April. Club officials: please let the NCF office and the referees know if you choose to play games outside of the designated dates on the fixture list.

The second wet weather weekend is on 1st and 2nd August, Lets hope we dont need it.

All Junior games were cancelled last week and the round is now void. We will amend the draw to show the week that Junior games start for points. Games preceding that weekend will be treated as trial matches with no points awarded. These "non-comp points" games must still be played.

Fingers crossed for some dry weather and here's hoping that the frustrations of watching football only on the TV will soon pass.

Wishing you all a good and relaxing Easter. See you on the park soon?

Record numbers sign on with NCF

Despite the economic downturn demanding families tighten their belts, there has been upswing in the number of players signing on for the upcoming North Coast Football season.

With predictions that football would suffer the blow of being deemed an unnecessary luxury by struggling families, NCFZ clubs went into February (registration month) with a sense of nervousness. And whilst some clubs have recorded a decline in registrations, overall the news is exciting; there are more people playing football this year than ever.

306 teams have entered the 2009 competition; 89 senior teams and 217 juniors. That is 13 more teams than last year. Leading the way again is the Woolgoolga Club which has nominated 27 teams comprising over 420 players. President Warren Alder doesn't believe he can put the books away just yet either.

"Every year we get an influx of registrations on the first weekend of Small Sided Games (SSG) so I'd say we will sign up a few more yet, which will put us above last year's numbers," Warren said.

The season kicks off on the first weekend of April with juniors getting plenty of time to recover from their first weekend of muscle soreness owing to the school holidays according for NCFZ Operations Manager Bob Harris.

"Because of the school and public holidays all falling around the same time, it is necessary to have a break after the first round of three Saturdays in a row," Bob said. "The seniors however will play the middle weekend of the school holidays, just not the first and last weekends which are Easter and Anzac day," he added.

Second on the list of teams entered is Northern Storm with 24 followed by Boambee and Bellingen with 19 teams each. Both Sawtell and Coffs Tigers have nominated 18 teams and Coffs United have entered 17 teams.

The women's competition has been boosted this year by the inclusion of two Grafton teams for the first time. Maclean and South Services are both entering a women's 1st grade and reserve grade team giving the ladies the longest weekly road trips of any competition.

Pre season training has begun and the season kicks off with Over 35's on the 2nd/3rd April, followed by juniors on the morning of Saturday April 4th and seniors that evening and the following day.

World headlines from the world game

There is no denying the popularity of football around the world. It arouses passions like few others sports and is therefore entitled to its fair share of headlines. Some of the stories making news this week are of particular interest to fans of the game even at a local level.

FFA launches World Cup bid
Football Federation Australia (FFA) has snuck in before the deadline to formally lodged its bid to host either the 2018 or 2022 World Cups. FFA chairman Frank Lowy and chief executive Ben Buckley personally delivered the bid to FIFA headquarters in Switzerland (nice work if you can get it!) ahead of the deadline; Tuesday morning our time.

Our opposition in the race to host the world's most popular event include; England, Japan, Russia, Indonesia, South Korea, Qatar, Mexico and the United States.

Imagine being able to see the World Cup finals without leaving our shores. The final decision will be made in December 2010. More detail here.

Fowler flies down under
The A-League, determined to have the longest pre-season training program in world sport, has welcomed its latest marquee player. Former England and Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler has touched down in Townsville this week ready to step out with new franchise North Queensland Fury.

With the A-League expanding to 10 teams next season, it means Fowler will be regularly heading to the Gold Coast to play against the other new boys Gold Coast United. That's a tempting offer; just a few hours drive north to see the A-League with players like Robbie Fowler in action. Gold Coast United already has its membership packages ready to go.

Flying Solo
Looks like we all need to start looking for the "man's" drink Solo from now on with the FFA clinching a 3-year deal with Schweppes. It means you will see Solo on just about everything associated with the men's & women's national teams, the A-League, W-League & national youth league.

Shoot for the stars
People have various ways of celebrating. Personally, I have never wanted to be near anyone who expresses their joy by discharging firearms into the air. Ever wondered what happens to all those bullets? Apparently they do come down eventually. Unfortunately one recently came down on an Iraqi footballer. Yes, it killed him. The Sydney Morning Herald reports the shot was traced to the gun of an elated fan following his team's 1-nil win on Sunday.

But wait, there's more! Never one to let a good story die, the BBC is reporting it was murder. And in their version, the game wasn't over. Far from it. Apparently the victim was just about to equalize for his team when the assassin brought him down from the stands. And he was shot in the head, not the chest. I don't know about you, but I reckon one of these two journo's (or maybe both?) was not at the game.

Kind of makes you glad our biggest problem is what to do on wet weather days.

Season Start Dates

The 2009 NCFZ Season Competition officially starts on the first weekend of April for all teams.

All Junior divisions will start on Saturday 4th April.
Note: All teams will play 18 rounds (weather permitting). Depending on the number of teams in each junior competitive division, the games where competition points are recorded may require staggered start dates. There will be a three week break after the first round due to Easter, the middle week of the School Holidays and the Anzac Day Holiday. This means round 2 of the junior competition will be on 2 May

All Senior divisions will start on Saturday/Sunday 4th & 5th April.
Note: All teams will play 18 rounds (weather permitting). Depending on the number of teams in each senior division, the games where competition points are recorded may require staggered start dates. There will be a one week break after the first round due to Easter. The 2nd round of seniors will be played on 18th / 19th April (the middle week of the School Holidays). There will then be another week break on 25th and 26th April for the Anzac Day Holiday. Round 3 of the senior competition will be played on the weekend of the 2nd and 3rd May.

Over 35s will start on Thurs/Fri evenings - 2nd & 3rd April
Womens 3rd Division will start on Fri 3rd April

We hope to have the draw available by next week.

There have been phenomenal increases in both Seniors and Junior nominated teams this season.
It also looks like player registrations have also risen on previous years.
Congratulations to all clubs who have increased their playing numbers. Hard work and well done!!

2009 Regional Championships - Round 1

North Coast Football hosted round 1 of the Northern NSW Regional Championships for juniors at Woolgoolga on Sunday. WUFC is the host club for all NCFZ home fixtures in this year's competition.

Northern NSW consists of six zones (Newcastle, Macquarie, Hunter Valley, Mid North Coast, North Coast and Northern Inland) with the 13's,14's & 15's boys 15's girls to contest the Regional Championships with games against one another every month between now and August.

The first match featured NCF 13 boys against the visiting Football Mid North Coast. It proved to be a tough match for the home team. The teams went to the break at 0-0 but NCF went a goal down just after half time.

However, the NCF boys had the famous Woolgoolga southerly at their back in the second half and they used it wisely. Both Noah Bedford and Ryan Magill got on the score sheet. Noah's goal came off a quick throw in which he controlled nicely before putting the ball in the net while Ryan's goal came about thanks to some good lead up work by Casey Walker. Defender Chris Lambert was undoubtedly the man of the match. NCF 2 - FMNC 1.

The 14 boys then took to the field in what proved to be the most dominant display by the home zone on the day. Riley Dillon set up the first goal by taking the ball down the right flank and crossing it to Jerry Whish-Wilson who made no mistake with it. The second was a piece of individual brilliance by Olivia Price who chipped the FMNC keeper from 18 yards out. That made the score line NCF 2 - FMNC 1 which is how it stayed until the final whistle.

The 15 boys came up against a well drilled and determined FMNC team in the afternoon. NCF included four talented girls in the squad (Jasmin Courtenay, Georgia Burt, Ashli Deane & Sarah Marsden) who were not in the least bit daunted by coming up against an all male squad. FMNC won this match 0-2 with a couple of nice goals. NCF beaten but not disgraced.

The 15 girls match was the last one of the day & threw up the most goals for the crowd to enjoy. The breeze had stiffened somewhat and the NCF girls ran into it in the first half. FMNC stunned the local girls with two goals in the first 10 minutes and a third before half time. The first one was a simple case of the attack having more determination than the defence. The second was a penalty after the referee ruled NCF keeper Alannah Rosewood body checked the FMNC striker. The third was a terrific strike from the edge of the penalty area which landed in the corner.

After half time and with the breeze at their back, the NCF girls began to play some positive, attacking football. They were awarded a Direct Free Kick about 22 yards out five minutes into the second half which Maggie Mills expertly fired into the net, although a keeper fumble played its part.

FMNC hit a fourth goal soon after which was partially blocked by NCF's second half keeper Emma Hayes. The ball, however, had too much momentum and came off Emma's hands, went over her head and looped in under the cross bar.

The match became even more exciting after this as NCF banged two more goals in. Firstly as Jessica Gunning got in behind the defence and passed to Kellie Langham to score and then through Ashinda Heron who latched onto a through ball after the goal keeper failed to clear it. Final score NCF 3 - FMNC 4.

North Coast teams will next be in action on March 22nd when they travel to Newcastle to face Macquarie Football.

Coffs Coast Tigers ready for Women's Challenge Cup

This weekend Coffs Coast Tigers will host its fourth annual gala weekend of women's football. The Women's Challenge Cup has become a pre-season hit out for an increasing number of teams from the local area and around the State.

The competition format is a straight knockout for full field, 11 a side teams, but can be a mixture of ages and abilities if the teams so wish. However, all players must be club based and the competition is not for regions who wish to play 'rep' teams. It's basically a good old fashioned pre-season gala competition for clubs.

This year eight women's teams have entered from local clubs, which has pleased organizers no end. They will be facing the out-of-towners including Merewether and Cardiff who come every year, but this year boast some girls from the inaugural W-League season.

There are 12 teams competing all up for $1000 first prize and $500 second prize with a consolation prize of $100. Sponsors include Coast Hotel, Bananacoast Hotbake, Palms Pharmacy and Club Financial Services.

Whilst the Women's Challenge Cup has always had a fun atmosphere, on the pitch the girls take the game seriously and the finals are always played with intensity.

Competition is on at Polwarth Drive Saturday and Sunday 9am-4pm (March 7th & 8th).

Ossie Ardiles endorses North Coast Football's
Small Sided Games

To the generation who played and watched football in the 1970's, Osvaldo Ardiles needs no introduction. A World Cup winner with his beloved Argentina on home soil in 1978 and FA Cup winner with Tottenham Hotspur in both 1981 & 1982, the aggressive midfielder reached the pinnacle of the sport and was adored by millions.

Last week, Ardilles, looking as fit as ever, made an appearance at Football Federation Australia's (FFA) second annual Coaching Conference in Sydney which was attended by North Coast Football's Director of Coaching Richard Evans. Ardiles had some interesting things to say about the state of the world game in Australia.

Overall, Ardiles said he believes Australia is heading in the right direction in developing better players and said he could even be talked into coaching in the Hyundai A-League if approached, however he stressed that Australia remained behind the front runners of the game in terms of technical ability (ie what you do when you have the ball at your feet during a match).

The Argentinian legend was nevertheless full of praise for the FFA's initiative amongst junior players known as Small Sided Games, where young players are put in teams with smaller numbers than usual (e.g. 3 vs 3 or 4 vs 4) and given the chance to kick the ball around without the added pressure of a competitive environment.

PHOTO: Richard Evans (left) with Argentina legend
Ossie Ardiles at the FFA National Coaching Conference

"I 100% agree with the idea of small-sided games," Ardiles said. "If Australia, doesn't improve the technique of the players, you have a limit of how far forward you can go. It will reach a certain level, but not go beyond that level" he added. "It can be taught at [age] 5, 6 or 7, but again it's a challenge for the coach, because it has to be fun in a game situation," which he indicated was the benefit of small-sided games.

North Coast Football has had its share of detractors for its introduction of FFA's Small Sided Games, however Ardiles would urge clubs and parents to stick with it for the sake of the national team in years to come. It seems those who are in the know are convinced it is the way to improve junior talent.

"Somebody said yesterday that Australia is very strong physically. Australia is a country that produces a lot of sportsman; they have character; they are fighters; it's in the technique and tactical part that Australia is perhaps lacking. This is where Australia should be concentrating, first technically and then tactically," said Ardiles.

And it doesn't have to mean clubs will be producing boring, robotic players. Ardiles stunned the conservative English FA as Manager of Tottenham in the mid 1990's by often putting teams on the pitch using five players up front, something not seen in the old dart since the 1950's.

Where did he get the idea? "The biggest inspiration for me as a player and in my life was Brazil 1970, with five front players," Ardiles admitted. The all conquering Brazilian World Cup winning team of 1970 was anything but boring and Ardiles would now encourage young players to begin with Small Sided Games for the sake of their own development and for the good of the game in Australia.

North Coast Football's Director of Coaching, Richard Evans, found Ardiles' comments very helpful and confirmation the local game was on the right track. Evans spent some valuable time with the legend and used it to pick his brains about the future of football in Australia.

"When you look at the major, elite clubs sides around the world, every training session involves a game of some sort, but I can guarantee you they won't be playing 11 verses 11. They will be playing a version of Small Sided Games," Richard said. "The reason for that is simple; more space, more time. Less space, less time. Therefore, Small Sided Games give every player more touches on the ball and demand they make decisions with it quickly because they are not out in wide open spaces. It produces better players. It's not rocket science," he added.

As for Ardiles, whether he becomes an A-League coach or not, his dream remains to coach his national team, Argentina, currently in the hands of Maradona the player Ardiles says is the best he has seen. Let's hope both become a reality. The full interview with Ossie Ardiles can be read here.

Local football clubs kick in to help the Victorian bushfire survivors

LOCAL FOOTBALL CLUBS KICK IN TO HELP
THE VICTORIAN BUSHFIRE SURVIVORS

With the tragedy of the Victorian bushfires foremost in everyone's minds local communities are assisting anyway they can.

The next three weekends will see thousands of football players registering with their clubs for the upcoming season and North Coast Football have joined with their counterparts Football Far North Coast to help the survivors of this tragedy by donating to the Victorian Bushfire Appeal.

This appeal has been launched by Craig Foster, former Socceroo and SBS commentator, and Craig is encouraging every Association around the country to do likewise:

"Everywhere we travel in the world, the football club has always been a central part of community life and the football family always ready to lend a hand to anyone in need, and never have fellow Australians been more in need of our assistance than right now."

"It is heartening to see the sporting community rally around the relief effort and important leadership has been shown by Football Federation Australia and the Socceroos, but we can all make a contribution, however large or small, and what better way than to come together at grass roots level through our love of football to help our fellow Aussies."

"The football community is one of the largest constituencies in Australia with over one million people playing the game and millions more involved in various capacities, and it is fitting that the grass roots will use the beginning of the football season to contribute money or blood to help a fellow Australian make a new beginning in their life."

"I am also pleased to announce that a leading member of the corporate football family, Castrol, who are a FIFA partner and with whom I have a strong association as an ambassador, have generously committed the sum of $25,000 to kick-start the grass roots effort, aside from the already significant contributions the company is making in Victoria."

"Well done to North Coast Football and Castrol, this is an initiative which I will be encouraging every Association around Australia to mirror, and it is no surprise that this spirit of generosity begins in the country. Giving and supporting have always been important elements of country life, and are the very heart and soul of football."

North Coast Football will be encouraging all their member Clubs to collect cash donations at their registration points over the next three weeks. Money raised will be passed directly onto the organisers of this National Football Appeal via the Zone office.

FFA supports Bushfire Appeal

Click here for Football Federation Australia website Football Federation Australia (FFA) today announced a donation of $100,000 to the Red Cross Bushfire Appeal along with other measures to show support for the communities affected by the devastating bushfires in Victoria.

"Everyone in the entire football community shares the disbelief at not only the tragedy in Victoria but the scale of it," said FFA CEO, Ben Buckley.

"Our sympathy and heartfelt wishes go to all those who have suffered."

In addition to the cash donation, FFA will also provide replacement football equipment to schools and junior football clubs that have lost equipment in the bushfires, when appropriate.

Buckley also said that:

there will be one minute's silence at both semi-finals to be played at Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane, on Friday and Telstra Dome, Melbourne, on Saturday;

tickets will be offered to families affected by the fires and the fire fighters and other emergency services workers to the semi-final between Melbourne Victory and Adelaide United at Telstra Dome;

there will be cash collections at Telstra Dome and at Suncorp Stadium for fans to make a donation either to the Bushfire Appeal (Melbourne) or the North Queensland Floods Appeal (Brisbane).

Qantas Socceroos playing a 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifier in Japan on Wednesday, and Hyundai A-League players participating in the semi-finals of the A-League this weekend, will wear black armbands as a mark of respect for those who have lost their lives.

"We hope that these gestures, while very small, can help bring some relief to the people who have lost so much and to the courageous men and women who have been working tirelessly to help them.

"We want to let them know that everyone involved in football is thinking of them," said Buckley.

Donations to the Australian Red Cross Bushfire Appeal can be made at www.redcross.org.au

Blood donations are also required to support burns victims. Call 13 14 95.

Which game has Australia's highest participation rate?

Many lay claim to being Australia's most popular sports code and it has been notoriously difficult to establish any sort of guidelines for testing the claims. Around the world, there is no contest. Football continues to outrank every other sport by miles with an estimated 30 million participants (but even here there is a dispute from - wait for it - Table Tennis which insists it ranks no. 1!). But what about Australia?

Statistically, it has been shown that walking is actually the most common exercise for Australians to participate in and that is probably not surprising. It is free, people of all ages can do it no matter where they live and Doctors prescribe it, especially for the elderly. As invigorating as walking is, what if you desire something a little more pulsating? What then?

Now, the Australian Sports Commission has entered the debate with an answer. Football is the organised sport with the largest number of participants. (It should be noted that this includes juniors, football's major supporter base in Australia. Amongst adults it is a little more competitive!) Walking is our most common leisure activity, but football wins amongst the organised codes.

Recognising this when it came into office, the Rudd Government immediately allocated $16 million over two years to Football Federation Australia to help it promote greater participation in the game. It was one of the reasons the W-League was able to get off the ground this season. And now it has confirmed that the Government will financially support Australia's bid to host the FIFA World Cup finals in either 2018 or 2022 to the tune of $45 million. Considering how serious the current economic crisis is, this is a considerable offer by the Federal Government and very much appreciated by the FFA and those in the grass roots of the game.

On top of that, 2009 is a World Cup qualification year. Will we see scenes like that of four years ago when the Aussies finally returned to the World Cup finals by beating Uruguay in Sydney? This time around our main opponents will be Japan. There is plenty to look forward to.

So it is with high expectations that clubs in the North Coast Football Zone gear up for the first big event of the 2009 season; registration day. All NCFZ clubs are opening the books on the first two Saturdays of February for registrations of all players. For a full list of clubs, venues and times, click » here.

The season kicks off on the first weekend of April with Grand Final days set down for the weekend of September 19th-20th. So what are you waiting for? Join the world game and enjoy the sport Aussies have taken up in record numbers.

A little bit of Woopi in Kenya

Peter Ainsworth with children of Kakamega orphanage in Western Kenya Shortly before Christmas, Woolgoolga residents Peter Ainsworth, Peter Bunch and Rhonda Bunch, visited Western Kenya to bring some Aussie input into a Christian conference there. Peter Ainsworth is pastor of All Nations Church, Woopi, and has been involved in Woolgoolga United Football Club for many years.

Woolgoolga United Football Club donated 10 footballs which were given to the kids in Kakamega in a local orphanage and childrens facility which was associated with a local church and community. Many of these kids had lost both parents to the AIDS epidemic currenlty sweeping Kenya. The children there have very little, and their eyes just lit up when the trio from downunder pulled out new balls and pumped them up.

PHOTO: Peter Ainsworth with children of Kakamega orphanage

The children had been playing with an old ball that kept going flat. One boy took a ball and almost immediately bounced it over 50 times on his right foot. They knew how to play the game although the sort of game they play is abit chaotic.

"They were just so excited. I was amazed at their keenness, speed and skill level," said Peter Ainsworth.

Future trips are definitely on the cards, where more sporting equipment will be taken to help these kids grow in their passion to live healthy lives and to dream for a brighter future.

Sponsorship Opportunities

Messsage from Mr Chris Eddy,
Chairperson NCFZ Management Committee

North Coast Football Zone (NCFZ) is a not for profit organisation charged with the responsibility of administering and developing the game of football on the North Coast.

We have in excess of 5000 registered players spanning the geographical boundaries from Macksville in the south up to Yamba/Iluka in the north and incorporates the key commercial and residential hubs of Coffs Harbour and Grafton.

NCFZ Management Committee is committed to the development of the game and its players and to assist the developmental pathway of its elite junior talent. To assist in this regard, NCF seeks corporate support as a means of ensuring that the foundation of player development and club growth continues to flourish.

NCF has always attracted significant local television radio and print media attention. Within our zone we have good coverage on local Prime and Win televison. We also have excellent coverage in the Coffs Coast Advocate and the Daily Examiner who run large previews of senior matches as well as printing post game articles prepared by local clubs. Sponsors and corporate supporters reap benefits from this media attention through increased exposure.

Our commitment to ensuring wide media coverage resulted in the appointment in 2007 of an experienced Media/Marketing Liaison Officer who ensures our Brand (and possibly your brand) is appropriately represented throughout the Zone.

Commercial sponsorship/partnerships provides a fantastic opportunity for business to show their commitment to the development of a sport which commands world wide participation. Of equal importance is an ability to expose local business houses as partners in supporting sport in the local community.

NCF can provide your business with great exposure. We will actively promote your business or product and naturally encourage members of the football community to make use of your company. With over 5000 registered members and thousands of associated family, friends and supporters I encourage you to make use of a platform that can provide you with great exposure and patronage.

Sponsorships/partnerships are often mistakenly regarded as a form of corporate generosity. Our commitment is to form partnering agreements that are not seen as merely donations but rather fosters a positive awareness of our business partners, potential customers and develops the game of football in your local community.

Besides reciprocal benefits to your business, advertising corporate image with goodwill from the footballing community allows NCFZ to:

Increase corporate awareness to North Coast Football supporters
Increase loyalty of existing customers
Increase your corporate profile in the Community

I encourage you look through the Sponsorship/Partnership Packages and make an assessment as to what level of opportunity and growth your business can generate from partnering with North Coast Football.

Telstra Assistance Fund Grants

Matt Cooper congratulates Coffs Harbour clubs on receiving share in Telstra's million dollar fund

Coffs Harbour sports and community clubs have been selected, along with 1280 clubs from across Australia, to receive new equipment and materials thanks to the 2008 Telstra Assistance Fund.

St George Illawarra Dragons star Matt Cooper will congratulate the successful Coffs Harbour clubs at a special presentation to be held at Coffs Coast Tigers FC's home ground on Tuesday 11 November at 4pm.

Bellingen FC, Coffs Coast Tigers FC, Corindi Red Rock Soccer Club, Dorrigo Highlanders Soccer Club, Sawtell & District Football Club and Woolgoolga United Football Club are among the clubs to benefit from the 2008 Telstra Assistance Fund, which has contributed over $6 million worth of sporting equipment to over 5000 sports and community clubs nationally in the past six years.

The successful clubs will be provided with essential equipment and materials such as footballs, soccer balls, hit shields, timing systems and water bottles.

Matt Cooper was thrilled with the number of clubs who registered for the fund. "I know how important it is to have good equipment at all levels of sport, and it's great to see so many clubs around Australia benefiting from the Telstra Assistance Fund," he said.

Telstra Area General Manager, Sue Passmore, said the company was proud to continue to support grassroots and community clubs in Coffs Harbour. "The Telstra Assistance Fund aims to promote a healthy lifestyle and encourage participation in sport. I am delighted that clubs in Coffs Harbour will benefit from the program," Passmore said.

"Grassroots clubs are the backbone of local communities. The support these clubs receive through initiatives such as the Telstra Assistance Fund helps them to continue the important role they play," she said.

Telstra is one of the largest corporate sponsors in Australia, investing in sponsorships that touch Australians from communities right across the country. The London Benchmarking Group evaluated Telstra's contributions to the community at almost $19 million last financial year.

North Coast Football to kick off ITC Academy

THE football season may be over for most Coffs Coast proponents of the world game, but for local elite players this week is the start of a new beginning.

A beginning that many hope will lead to a place playing for Australia or maybe even launch a professional football career. It is a dream of North Coast Football (NCF) to provide another Socceroo or Matilda after the recent success of Jenna Tristram.

With that in mind, NCF will launch its Intensive Training Program (ITP) Academy this week - Monday and Wednesday evenings - at Maclean Street.

NCF has selected 85 local footballers who have demonstrated that they have the potential and the passion to play the world game at a higher standard. A squad of 20 elite players will train twice weekly in Grafton and 65 players, between the ages of 11-16 years, will strut their stuff in Coffs Harbour throughout the summer months.

"The players that have been selected to join the ITC Academy will benefit immensely from this intensive coaching," NCF caretaker coaching director Gordon Barton said. "Elite training will also assist them in their selection for the state championships as NCF will be running four teams in the statewide regional competition next season.

"For many local players to realise their dream of playing for the Socceroos or the Matildas they must be prepared to play and train more than twice a week. "A commitment to play at a higher level is just one of many characteristics that young players must have today, raw talent is not enough."

NCF will interview applicants over the next few weeks for its vacant position of Football Manager, coach and player development, after the resignation of long-time director of coaching Bruce Wallace.

NCF Operations Manager Bob Harris said the zone had received some excellent applications for this position.
"We have had applications from across Australia from some of the countries most respected coaches," Harris said. "There have even been applications from European coaches."

It is expected that the new football manager will be on deck by the end of November and their appointment will further enhance the development of local players and the ITC Academy.

Newcastle Jets Westfield W-League
Head Coach Gary Phillips is also keeping close to his chest three potential signings, including Melbourne's Brianna Davey as a fill-in goalkeeper for a two week period and the possible signing of two overseas players.

"Brianna fills a gap we have at the moment for a backup keeper as we continue to look for a permanent standby for Alison," Phillips said. "I am also looking at two overseas players, which may or may not come off. If the international transfer applications I have in place fall through, I'll move quickly to fill the roster locally."

Phillips is also racing against the clock to complete the required international transfer paperwork to allow Katie Gill to play in this Sunday's season opener at Wanderers Oval, Broadmeadow.

"We have a few boxes to tick with getting Katie on the park but we will do everything in our power to make it happen," Phillips said.

For Salisbury, the presence of Gill who has been playing in Europe, will be a major boost for the team's chances not just against Canberra this weekend but for the whole season.

"Katie would put the finishing touch to our Matildas combination of Amber, Joey and myself," Salisbury said. "The experience here, combined with the enthusiasm of the younger players, would really give us a confident start."

North Coast Football Meeting

20/10/08
Important Dates

Although the season is over for many of us I thought this an opportune time to inform you of important dates for upcoming events and a general update on news from the North Coast Football Zone.

Following are some very important dates and venues for your 2008 and 2009 diaries.

2008 Annual General Meeting
NCFZ will hold the 2008 Annual General Meeting at the Woolgoolga Bowling Club on Saturday 29th November at 2pm. All clubs must be represented. Fines will be imposed as per the competition by-laws if clubs do not attend.

2009 All Clubs Meeting
The 2009 All Clubs Meeting will be held at the Woolgoolga Bowling Club on Sunday 1st February 2009 at 10am - 2pm. An agenda will be sent out to all clubs nearer the date. Once again all clubs must be represented. This is a vitally important meeting as the changes to our competition will be explained and new team nomination forms, registration forms etc will be handed out.

2009 Competition
The 2009 NCF Competition will commence on 4-5th April with Round 1 of both senior and junior divisions. Grand Finals will be held on the weekend of the 19-20th September 2009. More information will be forthcoming at the All Clubs meeting.

SSGs for years 6 to 9s in 2009
NCFZ will be continuing SSGs for years 6 to 9s in 2009. The 9s will play 7 V 7 on a 40m X 30m field with 5m X 2m goals. We will be holding a SSG coordinators meeting for all clubs possibly after the All Clubs Meeting. As you may be aware our Director of Coaching Mr Bruce Wallace has resigned. Bruce will finish with us on 31 October and we hope to have a new 'Football Manager' in place by mid December. We are sure the new manager will want to be involved in the SSG roll out therefore I can not confirm dates/times for the meeting. However please be assured we will hold it as soon as we can in the new year.

Youth Licence Course
NCFZ will be conducting a youth licence course for coaches. The course now has around 20 participants and will commence on 8th November. All participants will be informed of the details by email. Please encourage your club coaches to gain formal coaching qualifications during 2009 as it will be a mandatory requirement in the coming years. NCFZ will be conducting Grassroots and Junior Licence courses early in 2009....watch this space.

Update your club contact details on the NCFZ website
Finally and MOST importantly can club secretaries please remember to update your club contact details on the NCFZ website. The Club Directory is where we will get your club details from. It is good to see that some clubs have already obtained 'designated email addresses' that will remain the property of their club when committee members move on. Please update ALL new contacts after your club AGM's. These Club AGM's MUST be held prior to the NCFZ AGM on 29th November. Please send any updated contacts to:

Youth Coaching Licence Date Change

You may be aware that NCFZ are intending to conduct a Youth Coaching Licence course over the next few weeks. We have already received applications from 12 persons. Unfortunately we have had to reschedule the course and it will now be conducted on the following dates:

Saturday 8 November 9.00 - 5.00pm
Wednesday 12th 5.30 - 9.00pm
Saturday 15th 9.00 - 5.00pm
Wednesday 19th 5.30 - 9.00pm

The course will now be run by NNSWF coaching staff and all successful applicants will be advised of the venue once the numbers are finalised. This is an ideal opportunity for your club to get formal coaching qualifications for your coaches. If any coaches already have a Junior licence they are eligible to sit for the Youth licence so please encourage them to do so.

Some coaches may be eligible for an exemption if they can demonstrate they have previous coaching experience at a State level.

Please also be aware that from 2009 onwards NCFZ will be working towards a situation where all coaches have some formal coaching qualifications. It is a 'duty of care' issue and our State Federations are informing us that already many other Zones and Associations do not allow unqualified personnel to coach. While we very much value the efforts of our volunteers this is the way of the future. The responsibility will rest on Clubs to ensure that their coaches are qualified to work with children and young adults. Providing an opportunity for your coaches to acquire formal qualifications will not only protect you as clubs but will obviously raise the standard of football throughout our Zone.

We will be conducting 'Grassroots' and 'Junior' licences during 2009 but please be aware that the days of unlicensed coaches are fast coming to an end. This is a great opportunity to formalise the skills base of your club coaches so please do all you can to support this initiative.

Further information can be obtained from the FFA and NNSWF web sites.

Bobcats take Summer Football to the Showground

Click here for Maclean FC website

The Maclean Bowling Club Bobcats Football Club has once again taken the lead in player development in the Clarence Valley by creating an Under 20's Youth Development squad to play in the Football Far North Coast Summer Youth League. Whilst this team will be playing under the name of Maclean, the Bobcats are inviting any player in the Clarence Valley under 20 years of age interested in pushing themselves in this strong regional competition. In a great sign for the area, players from local rivals Yamba are putting that rivalry to one side and joining the squad with 16 year old Travis McGonagh already fitting in well with his more experienced team mates. It is a great opportunity for emerging players looking to bridge the gap from junior to senior football with Bobcat Premier League players like Lance Knibbs, Jack Plater, Joe Turner and Tom Usher all experienced in the top grade providing the nucleus of the team for the younger brigade to learn from.

The side is going to be guided by the coaching team of John Allen and Grant Neilson. Allen brings a wealth of experience from Stanthorpe in Queensland and set up a similar youth squad in his former town, whilst Bobcat stalwart Neilson coached to the Bobcats to their first ever Premier League premiership back in 1999 and has over 20 years playing experience in Premier League competitions. Both coaches are really looking forward to the season ahead. "We have a really good blend of players to choose from, with young up and comers, through to those that are already at that senior level and capable of playing exceptional football" Allen said. "For any kid looking to take their game to the next level this is an opportunity too good to miss" Neilson added.

Whilst the coaches will be charged with finding the right balance and molding their team with players from different clubs and divisions to take on the might of FFNC Clubs stretching from Woodburn to Kingscliff and all points between, there will be another variable thrown into the mix. With the summer competition the Bobcats usual home ground being used for the cricket. So for the first time the Bobcats will take to the field at the Maclean Showground that is more used to seeing an oval shaped rugby league ball kicked and thrown around then the round ball version of football.

All games will be Friday night fixtures with the Bobcats hosting Lennox Head in the first game at the Showground on 17th October at 7pm. There is no better way to kick off your summer weekends then to come along and watch the future of football in the Clarence Valley test themselves against the raiding clubs from the north. In the meantime any players interested in trialing are encouraged to contact Grant Neilson on 0429 664312 as there are still some positions available.

Greed poisons the game

Craig Foster, continues from where he left off last Saturday evening at the NCF Presentation Night...
- article courtesy of theworldgame.sbs.com.au

Five years after the Crawford report, football has made wonderful strides forward, yet the next area of the game that require attention are (some of) the State administrative bodies.

Particularly, in my experience, Football NSW and Northern NSW.

Much of my time is spent in a volunteer capacity with Clubs and Associations around the country, a wonderful opportunity to put something back into the game at entry level and spend time with hundreds of passionate and committed volunteers, the very lifeblood of football, but also a valuable chance to gauge the mood at grass roots and hear the frustrations they face.

And throughout NSW the message is always the same, that cultural change is yet to occur at State level.

Countless times I hear about the endemic lack of support to associations and the hundreds of thousands of dollars paid in levies with little in return, and it is clear that in many instances, the old political problems still exist.

This is partly because the ‘old guard’ of administrators, who led the game into its darkest period, continue to infest the management and boards of these bodies.

Certainly in the case of Northern NSW, outside of the Newcastle area they are a constant source of angst and a detriment to the game in the country and northern areas, regions the FFA’s National Development Review specifically targeted to provide a rich vein of playing talent in future.

An inquiry into the management of NNSW would be a very valuable exercise, with every association and zone uniting to determine whether the service they receive from the State body is anywhere near adequate for the considerable levies they pay.

This is the next positive progression for football, now that the veneer has been reshaped with the National teams and the professional domestic competition, time to turn an intense spotlight on the real heart of the game, the grass roots, where hundreds of thousands of players and spectators, volunteers and administrators have their daily and weekly football experience, time for the game itself to demand better management at State level.

The same applies to Football NSW where the culture is, in my view, poisoned and in need of complete overhaul, because this organization has a history of putting profit before the development of the game.

The best known example is the Coerver system, a private training franchise, which Football NSW formerly ran in what was a fundamental conflict of interest and led to a neglect of the junior clubs and Associations who were, in essence, in competition with their own State body for the training of young players.

What incentive was there for NSW to work diligently to improve the standard of coaching and the systems of youth development in the junior clubs, when they were selling training sessions to fill the gap for parents who could, or at least felt it necessary to, afford the extra training?

Coerver delivered millions of dollars of revenue for NSW and the excessive charging for the ‘training’ of young players still persists. The name may have changed and the license fee avoided, but the culture of greed still exists, and Lord help any parent whose child is persuaded to attend numerous camps, programs and costly overseas tours all in the name of ‘development’, with some parents forking out anywhere from $10,000 to $20,000 per year.

I hesitate to say the ‘education’ of youngsters, because sadly Football NSW fail to understand that a football development coach is far more than a drills and skills practitioner, and have promoted former Coerver coaches throughout the elite development system.

Coerver has its place, and can be one element of a broader football education just like the many other skills based systems available, but for Football NSW to profit from a service they should have been giving to clubs and Associations to build the game was, in my view, abominable.

The proper role of Football NSW is to ensure the level of information, management and coaching is of such quality in our junior clubs that parents don’t have to pay for extra coaching, in a game that is already costly in relation to other codes, rather than competing directly with their paying clubs and profiting from the vacuum they created.

This culture of greed is anti-football because the focus is on youngsters whose parents can afford to pay, not on the best players as a matter of principle.

Now Football NSW have launched a site which fits perfectly within their culture of profit before the game, selling simple coaching sessions to parents around the State who are in the dark about how to conduct and plan the season’s training of a young team, and now are made to pay for the information.

So, in a fight with three other football codes who spend tens of millions of dollars on free education, equipment and resources to attract young talent and support their game, Football NSW continues to hoard their millions and charge the maximum for the most basic support resources for the football community.

The sole shareholder and managing director of the company behind the site is a Football NSW employee, in partnership with the State body, and thus is remunerated by the parent’s levies to support the growth and improvement of the game, then charging them for basic information.

Now, why are these parents and coaches in need of assistance?

Because Football NSW have done nothing to help them, yet now they seek to profit from their own incompetence.

So once again, instead of seeing a problem to be solved for the good of the game, Football NSW sense an opportunity from which to profit.

In my view, this is abhorrent, and naturally anyone who wants to personally profit from the game is entitled do so, but not while being in a position where one of their basic tasks is to improve the quality of players and coaches, in tandem with the coaching and development section of the organization, and every parent and Association in the State should right now ask why they do not receive this basic coaching information for free, when they have already paid for it in their levies?

State bodies have a responsibility to deliver every possible program and education resource at the lowest possible cost in order to support the game and their paying customers the Associations, clubs and parents, and their stance should be that the cheaper and more accessible coaching information is at club level, the better our youngsters will be coached, the greater our future prospects, the stronger the game.

Football NSW evidently takes the view that the less people know, the better the opportunity to profit, and it’s fine to do so from the very customers who partly fund the organization through registration levies.

The FFA would do well to initiate a very close inspection of the conduct of two bodies who are poisoning our game at many levels, and grass roots Associations should immediately organise themselves to collectively question whether they are receiving the service the game requires, and deserves.

It is time to question any conflicts of interest and all commercial agreements and whether they are appropriate, and for the grass roots, the heart and soul of football, to rise up and demand game-centred management, not greed before the game.

Many grass roots administrators tell me they feel powerless and that any attempts to question NNSW or Football NSW leads to victimisation, but this culture of fear must end, and it is through the solidarity of genuine lovers of the beautiful game that the grass roots can effect positive change.

And be very certain of this, any ethical State body will welcome their Association constituents getting together, sharing knowledge and resources, asking probing questions, and demanding outstanding service in the interests of the sport.

Those who don’t support this are the final blight to be removed from the game.

NCF Clubs close the year in Style

PHOTO: Craig Foster addresses the 200 guests at the NCFZ annual presentation night

North Coast Football has drawn the curtain on another season with an end of year celebration held in the auditorium of CEX Group in Coffs Harbour, the zone's major sponsor.

It was a night of fun, for recognising hard work in every club and to hear about the world game from keynote speaker, SBS commentator and former Socceroo, Craig Foster.

After the 200 guests had mingled over pre-dinner drinks, the 10 club Presidents of teams in 1st division for 2009 were called forward to draw names out of the hat (a football actually) to create the first round of next year's draw.

Here's the result with home teams named first:

ROUND 1 2009 (MEN'S 1ST DIVISION AND YOUTH LEAGUE*)

 Sawtell Scorpions   V   Northern Storm
Coffs Coast Tigers   V   Grafton City
Coffs United Lions   V   Maclean Bobcats
Boambee Bombers   V   Orara Valley Dingoes
 Urunga Raiders   V   Woolgoolga Wolves

*NB: The Youth League replaces the old reserve grade (called '2nd division' in 2008) from 2009 onwards. The competition which offers promotion to 1st division will now be called '2nd division'.

Craig Foster then took to the stage for a talk which covered all areas of the Australian game from its history to its immediate future and one message was left ringing in the ears of the captive audience: the future lies with our children.

Foster praised North Coast Football for the efforts it was making in the game at a local level and commented that it was pleasing to see the zone's referees at the function. He admitted he was fortunate to be able to make a living out of the world game and added that Football Federation Australia (FFA) needed to support the code by growing it in regional areas.

Statistically speaking, Foster noted that it was far easier to become an elite sportsman from regional origins than metropolitan areas due to the close proximity of training facilities and lifestyle benefits.

Foster also summarised the shift in thinking that has occurred amongst young footballers over the past two decades as they now look to further their careers through A-League clubs instead of ethnically based clubs. When Australia beat Uruguay in 2005 to qualify for the World Cup finals for the first time in over 30 years, there were nine different nationalities represented in the 11 players on the pitch, but all of them proudly Australian.

Craig Foster giving his thoughts on the current health of Australian football - photo courtesy of Terry Allen

PHOTO: Craig Foster giving his thoughts on the current health of Australian football

However, for Foster, the biggest news in Australian football of recent times was Friday's announcement that Football Federation Australia Chairman Frank Lowy was appointed to the FIFA World Cup organising committee.

That move has given Australia its best chance of hosting the World Cup as Lowy will oversee the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and will be part of the committee that decides where the 2018 event is held.

Foster believes Australia's football fortunes are on the rise with national coach Pim VerBeek shaping our elite men's team into a formidable line up which plays the attractive passing game which demands other teams chase the ball instead of the other way around which has so often been the case.

In 2006 Australia made it to the knockout stage of the World Cup finals, something even the famed 1974 Socceroos could not achieve, only to be cruelly bundled out during injury time against Italy when a penalty was awarded to the Azzurri in somewhat dubious circumstances. Foster described that moment as one of stunned disbelief for the SBS crew who were live at the venue in Germany covering the game. Many of the commentators and behind the scenes crew had tears welling in their eyes as they watched the Aussies exit the tournament while they worked at bringing the game into our lounge rooms.

Clearly this is not just a job for Foster and he is keen to share that passion with NCF volunteers whom he admits already look to have the game flowing through their veins.

But he is only too aware of the difficulties facing clubs and their players in regional areas who can be frustrated by the tyranny of distance and drain on families trying to get their young hopefuls along the pathway to the top.

Foster said openly he thought the Foxtel coverage of the A-League was credible and acknowledged how much they were putting into the game but lamented that junior players all across the country are still propping up the code at senior level through registration fees when they should be the beneficiaries of the code's worldwide popularity.

Foster closed his talk by remarking to the audience that today's six year olds will have the hopes of the nation riding on their backs as they try to win the 2030 World Cup and reminded all present that if they are to be successful in their quest, they must be coached correctly now. And not only coached properly, but put through a system whose administration is healthy and secure.

With that Foster again praised the efforts of local administrators and each club's players and officials and stood by the trophies ready to present the annual awards which were announced as follows;
