With some new faces on board the U/12 Woolgoolga Dolphins were looking forward to a successful 2008 season.

After being beaten in the 07 grand final by the Northern Storm the Dolphins were out to prove they were maturing as a team and as individuals.

The season didn't start as planned with a first round draw but their team work improved with every game. The team was made of kids with varying skill levels, but by the end of the season super coach Keith Miller had the team playing great football.

The Dolphins snuck into minor premiers, but lost their major first semi and had to use their second chance card to progress through to the Grand Final. After losing the previous two grand finals to their arch rivals the Northern Storm, the boys went into the game as underdogs, but had a self belief it was their year.

The first half saw some great defence deny the Storm any clean shots on goal and in return the forwards got one up with an awesome goal. The second half was all class as the boys pushed the ball around like pros and flew away to a 5-0 crushing win. The following weekend they completed the hat trick of minor premiers, grand final winners and zone champions by defeating Yamba in a close battle at the Zone Championships.

All the parents would like to thank Keith Miller and team manager, Drew Martin for their efforts during the 2008 season.

The Nambucca Strikers under 12s played Dorrigo Dragons in the football Grand Final on Sunday 7th september 2008. It was held at the Coffs Harbour International Stadium and all the players were excited to be playing at such a big venue.

The Strikers got off to a dream start when Max Lynch swerved the ball around a couple of Dorrigo defenders and slotted the ball in to score within the first 5 minutes. David Marchant was hovering in line with Dorrigo's last defenders and when a beautifully weighted through ball came he pounced and streaked away from the defenders. He fired a great shot wide of the 'keeper to score.

This goal advantage settled Nambucca's nerves and they put on a spectacular display of football. They passed freely between the backs, mids and forwards. Dorrigo made a few breaks into our half but the Nambucca defence didn't give them any easy shots and 'keeper Skye looked confident, stopping any shots with sure hands.

Caleb Richards persistently chased down any long through balls to pressure the Dorrigo 'keeper. Brandan Gregory worked hard in mid-field muscling Dorrigo off the ball. Another break-away goal by David M. saw the Strikers go to half time with a 3 goal lead.

PHOTO: Nambucca's Brandan Gregory and Dorrigo's Eric Moore going hard for the ball in the 12s 2nd Div. NCF 2008 Grand Final.

In the second half, Dorrigo found some of the form that had made them Minor Premiers. Dorrigo's Harry Vandyke was strong on the ball and worked his way through the Nambucca defence and finished with a well placed shot to put Dorrigo on the board. In reply, Max took a strong shot from out wide to score again for Nambucca.

Dorrigo were maintaining more possession now. Harry V. was a focus for the Dorrigo team's attack and he scored again.

Dave M. broke through down the left side again and scored to sew up the game for Nambucca and earn himself a hat-trick.

Congratulations to the whole team. Many thanks to the Coach Wayne Hinton and Manager Jennett Gregory - a big job well done.

PHOTO: Robbie De Jong lining up the ball for the Strikers' Under 12s

It's getting near the end of the football season and its hotting up for the Strikers
Under-12s team. They are sure of making the semi-final play-offs, its just a matter of from what position on the competition table. They played two games last weekend, one to catch up a rained-out game.

The Strikers Under 12s played Korora's Northern Storm on Saturday at Nambucca. The Strikers had most of the possession in the first half. When Nambucca were awarded a penalty kick Sarah Orman stepped up as she had earnt the honours during training. Sarah's firm strike was never in doubt and Nambucca were up one.

Our 'keeper this week was Harley who did a great, enthusiastic job - often coming all the way out of the box to get the ball. In the last part of the half the Korora players got keen and moved up the field into a good position to knock in a goal.

Blake MacRae did a huge amount of work in defence and midfield and he earnt the Strikers' man-of-the-match award. In the 2nd half, Korora found their rhythm resulting in another goal and they held on to win the match.
U12: Nambucca 1 Northern Storm 2.

Nambucca Strikers Caleb Richards jockying the Boambee player On Sunday, the Under 12s travelled to Boambee to take on the Boambee Jets. Nambucca Strikers were quickly on the attack with good passing through the forwards resulting in a goal by Caleb Richards in the second minute.

Boambee had a couple of opportunities from free kicks but couldn't convert them. Nambucca were up 3 goals by half time.

Boambee came back with extra determination and scored a well struck goal. A penalty kick was awarded to Nambucca and Sarah Orman struck it well, the ball going in high to the right, just beyond the 'keepers reach.
Max Lynch struck a bullet from out wide on the right that left the Boambee 'keeper no chance, going in at the far post. The win cements the Nambucca Under 12s third place position on the table with a game in hand. PHOTO: Nambucca Strikers Caleb Richards 'jockying'

Nambucca News - Jul 19

With not everyone back from the school holidays last Saturday, there were opportunities for kids to pick up an extra game or two of football at home.

Strikers 11s team kicked off first against Sawtell. The team has been doing it tough without a full team and in the 1st division but they keep showing a lot of determination. The confident Sawtell side scored eight goals in the first half but the 2nd half was totally different and Nambucca matched it with Sawtell, both teams getting a goal each.

Nick Hickey taking the ball up for the Strikers under 10s The Strikers under 10 Blues also played Sawtell at Nambucca on the weekend.

This age group is always a lively affair with the players leaping and dashing around like they have springs in their feet.

Everyone is showing improvement in their football skills and got some good touches or boots on the ball.

The Strikers under 12s played Bellingen and had to call on the help of a few younger players as they had lost a few regulars through injury and holidays. Bellingen only had 10 players themselves.

This age group are showing some promising skills development with some quality touches, attacking headers and game awareness coming out in the game.

The Strikers scorers were Caleb Richards, Max Lynch (2), Brandan Gregory and David Marchant. Zac Hocking put in a great effort in defence and midfield and earned our 'man of the match'.

The scorer for Bello was Jedd Mallison. Nambucca won 5-1.

The Strikers under 14s were up against Korora's Northern Storm who they beat in the first round of the season. Nambucca showed plenty of spirit but the Northern Storm were too good this time round, scoring 4 goals.

Football Fun

Photo - Football Fun
PHOTO: Football Fun.

The two North Coast Football Woolgoolga 13 years girls teams played each on the first weekend of the school holidays before a split in the competition takes place.

The two teams, who train together each week, have been rivals for the first half of this year, but will now play in separate divisions with North Coast Football splitting the 13 years girls competition into two divisions from the resumption of play on July 19th. The Woolgoolga Waves will play in division one while the Sharks will play in division two.

On Saturday, as the photo indicates, the players and coaching staff treated their last meeting for the year as a fun day. In fact the two teams were mixed for the first time on the field and the players dressed in streamers, ribbons and whatever other theatrical costume they could find.

No one can remember the score.

The Sawtell Football Club Recipe for Fun

The Sawtell Football Club
Recipe for Fun!

Ingredients:

A flat, open grassy space, with parking nearby for numerous spectators.

A couple of Small Sided Games Coordinators.

Parents - assorted shapes, sizes, ages and sporting abilities; all with one thing in common - a love of their children and a willingness to cope with the Saturday morning clamber of football-booted feet as excitement rises before THE BIG GAME (isn't every week THE BIG GAME?).

Several pop-up goals.

A countless number of coloured cone markers.

A canteen providing buckets of hot chips and red frogs for after-game rewards & refreshments.

and last, but not least...

An abundance of very active, fun-loving children of assorted ages between 5 and 9years.

Method:

1. Get the coordinators to the ground early on Saturday morning

2. Un-flip the popup goals (without hitting yourself in the face!)

3. Walk several hundred metres setting out cones and positioning goals

4. Watch and wait... 'they will come' (to use the words from a famous baseball movie)

5. Observe, smile, giggle and feel proud as the 2018 / 2022 / 2026 World Cup Socceroo & Matilda stars strut their stuff

6. Enjoy their delight as the boys and girls play before, during... and after the whistle.

7. Pack up and do it all again next week, because the end product is so priceless!

The above recipe is a no-fail Mother's favourite, guaranteed to succeed each and every Saturday of the Football season.

Nambucca News

The junior Nambucca Strikers teams played football on the long weekend.

Juniors:

Nambucca Strikers' Max Lynch over the ball
The Nambucca Under 12s started early in Bellingen. Wayne, the coach looked nervous but he was going to his wedding after the game.

Caleb R. got an early goal and this gave the team confidence to play a very attacking style of game. Max worked hard, backing up in defence and bringing the ball all the way up to attack the goal several times.

The Bello keeper did well to deny the Strikers any more in the first half. Nambucca continued to combine well all across the park and another shot from Caleb was pushed out by the keeper, only to have Harley follow in and slot it in the net.

Bello counter attacked but our keeper, Skye, snuffed out some good shots with a very safe pair of hands. Late in the game Nambucca's shots only found the posts but we already had the points. Bellingen 0 Nambucca 2.

Alec Gage leaps to feed the ball to Mark Savage in the Strikers 10s Red game. The Nambucca 10s Reds travelled to Bello' to play against Bellingen. Bellingen got the lion's share of the goals in the first half. However the Strikers dominated play in the 2nd half.

Alec used his height and speed well to control the midfield. Hamish showed some spunk, including a surprisingly, big boot through to the forwards.

Lawson T. had a cracking right foot shot that took an exceptional save from Bello's keeper to stop. Lachie P. tore through the opposition up the left wing many times but somehow Bello hung on to prevent Nambucca scoring.

Many thanks to Jack from Bello who played with us and did a superb job as keeper.

Next Week:

The Women's teams have two games this week - the rescheduled game against the Coffs Lionesses is at Coronation Park on Thursday night from 6 pm. On Saturday they play Northern Storm at York St, Coffs Harbour.

Young Referees selected for Elite Training

Five junior referees from the North Coast Football Zone have been accepted into an exclusive training program which equips young referees (aged 16-24) with the knowledge and skill to become top rank whistle blowers.

The five are; Mitchell Jones (Grafton), Simon Ellis (Sapphire), Amanda Riley (Central Bucca), Alec Jones (Coffs Harbour) and Lee Miles-Ward (Nambucca Heads).

Each was nominated by the local Referees Standing Committee and now pack their bags for UNE Armidale on Monday for four days of intensive training and scrutiny.

The Referees' Development Camp has become an annual fixture and is held in conjunction with a similar camp for emerging players. The young referees will spend some of the time controlling games the players are involved in at the camp.

The Referees' Development Camp will also be used for the selection of Northern NSW referees to officiate at the National Titles in Coffs Harbour in July and October.

Last Wednesday night, the NCF board agreed to fully pay for each of the five local referees to attend the camp which, at $300 per head, means an outlay of $1500. A small price to pay for the development of local referees.

Coffs United and Woolgoolga play for Barselaar Shield

This Saturday Coffs United and Woolgoolga United Football Clubs will play their own competition within a competition. It is called The Tony Barselaar Memorial Shield in memory of its late namesake who was an important figure in the early development of both clubs.

On Saturday seven teams from Coffs United and Woolgoolga will line up against each other in round two of North Coast Football's 2008 season. The competition points from those games will go towards their respective winners in each clash as normal, but they will also count towards the final tally in the Shield contest.

The Tony Barselaar Memorial Shield has not been played for two years, but prior to that was a yearly feature on the calendar since 1995, the year after Tony passed away. To make the contest possible, however, all Coffs United and Woolgoolga teams must play each other in the same round and that is what is happening this weekend.

The Shield clash commences on Friday night with the Coffs Lions and Woolgoolga Sharks hobbling out for an Over 35's game at BCU International Stadium.

On Saturday, seven more teams will do battle, all at Woolgoolga's High Street fields, the venue for this year's Shield. The draw is as follows;
8.30am - 17 years girls
9.55am - 12 years boys
10.30am - 15 years boys
1.00pm - Women's 2nd division
3.00pm - Women's 1st division
