NCF gives young Goalkeepers off-season tuition
Prime TV clip now available - see end of article
North Coast Football may have packed the 2007 season up already, but for a handful of dedicated young football players, the game goes on.
Six boys and girls from NCF clubs are taking part in a four week specialist goalkeeping program being held at the York Street playing fields on a Monday afternoon, having already gone through an initial four week program in October/November.
Each of the players is involved in the Junior Representative Development Program, having already been recognised for their outstanding work with the gloves in their club games however, the clinic is not limited to elite players.
"Generally goalkeepers in junior club games are selected on a rotation basis. Everyone gets a go and they almost never get specialist goalkeeping tuition unless their coaches happened to be goalkeepers themselves at some point," Dave Curley (clinic instructor) said.
"This program aims to take talented young goalkeepers and improve their technical ability. Hopefully, we will start encouraging more juniors to love the position of goalkeeper. The off season is a great time to work on your technique while you do not have the pressure of playing competitive games." Dave Curley said.
This week, Prime TV News came to one of the sessions to tape the drills in action and will feature the clinic in its nightly news at 6pm on Tuesday December 4th.
Thanks to Prime TV News we now have a copy of the interview available for download...

World's Best Keeper?

Greatest Goalkeeper Actions, ever

Too often football highlights programs only show goals. This is the real deal, why would you play any other position? Goalkeepers should wear capes with their underwear on the outside. Oh yeah, Spiderman keeper - it all makes sense. Be keeper be proud!
Spiderman Keeper

I don't know who this is, but it's one of the coolest things I have ever seen. What other position in a team sport could get away with this. Here is a great example of the individuality of the keeper in terms of personality, flamboyance and freedom of expression. Go Spiderman.
Hilarious Misses

Just remember keepers, it's not over til the balls in the net. Never say never.
Buffon v Zidane

What a moment. Two great players , two great plays, one massive occasion. The FIFA World Cup Final 2006.
The French master, Zinedine Zidane's last meaningful contribution in a football match, unless you count the headbutt.
As for big Gigi, what a save, the slo-mo shows you that he reads the play, get's into his set position nice and early then relies on pure instinct (and hours and hours of training) to respond like a panther, pawing the Zi Zou rocket to safety. This is the moment the world cup was won, this is why the goalkeeper is so important to a team's success.
Rene Higuita & the Scorpion kick
Dave's 2 bob's worth on Rene Higuita & the Scorpion kick.
Rene Higuita - legend or fool?
Known as El Loco, which I am pretty sure means 'crazy' or something similar produced the famous Scorpion kick at Wembley in the early 1990's. It has become enshrined in legend.
As a goalkeeper coach I am mortified by the undue risk, but then again I am impressed, indeed astounded by Rene's athleticism, agility and eye - heel coordination.
