Savannah Boller
Under 14/1
Byron Bay FC
Football Far North Coast
For a player who only took up football two years ago, Savannah has come a long way. Having played rugby in Sydney, when her family moved North she switched codes and put her ball handling skills to good use. In the FFNC 12 girls representative team she was identified by selectors for her talent and went on to be selected as the goalkeeper in the NNSW state team.
Competing at the national championships in Canberra last month she did her club, zone and family proud. Although only 13, Savannah now plays in the FFNC grade 14 1st division mixed comp for Byron Bay FC as well as the FFNC 14 girls rep team competing in the Queensland state youth league.
Congratulations Savannah from the Newcastle Permanent Building Society and Northern NSW Football!

Under 7 Dynamites
Dunoon United FC
Football Far North Coast
The “Dunoon Dynamites” Under 7’s team are a happy and motivated bunch! The team is made up of new players and players from last season’s competition. Despite the wet weather, the team has managed to get in several training sessions (even training during the school holidays!). They have worked hard and have "gelled" well as a team.
During their first game, the boys and girls showed excellent sportsmanship and an enthusiasm that is truly inspiring. They cheered the other team's goals and used team work to score their own goals. The team always support each other and have a good sense of sportsmanship.
Congratulations Dynamites from the Newcastle Permanent Building Society and Northern NSW Football!

SYL Reports / Results Round 6

15 Boys: NCF Galaxy 1 FMNC Predators 0

Despite NCF’s good performances to this point in the competition, our first round draw and the fact that FMNC had played on the rained out weekend meant that we have not yet appeared as the first placed team on the table. This weeks’ fixture saw us come up against the team sitting above us and was our opportunity to claim the top spot.

Another beautiful day for football, sunny and not too warm, a full complement of players which gave us 2 on the bench (a luxury we have not had to this point) meant it would be hard to find excuses if we were to perform badly.

The game started well for us. The boys were in good early form playing neatly and passing the ball around confidently. Of note was the increased tempo and subsequent intensity of the match and the fact that the team were able to lift and perform under a good deal more pressure than we have faced previously.

FMNC predators were clearly not ready to relinquish their position without a fight and played thoughtful creative football when they possessed the ball, keeping us constantly needing to match their efforts and counter in defence. An open and very entertaining match was unfolding with both teams battling for supremacy.

Ultimately it could be argued that the tussle in the central midfield was the crucial factor in the contest. When NCF dominated in that role the whole team benefited, whilst when the Predators took charge in the centre the opposite was the result. Having said that the supporting roles of the fullbacks behind the midfield and the strikers making space to receive and attack could not be underestimated.

Going forward, NCF Galaxy put together some nicely worked attacking plays. Switching from wing to wing to find space and also playing in behind the defence for our central strikers when opportunities arose. Sean Butt found himself through on goal more than once but was forced wide. Jack Vandermaat had chances in the centre but the ball just wouldn’t sit for the strike. Aaron Wolfe was fast and direct down the left to get through but we just didn’t get the final finish we needed.

At half time NCF 0 – FMNC 0 should probably have been NCF 1 or 2 – FMNC 0, and we were reminded of the last time we played at this ground and the constant shots that just wouldn’t go in. On a positive note, we were the team attacking most regularly and had the better field positions through the half. Keep at it and surely the result would come.

The second half saw the Predators come out stronger that the first. They had lifted and were looking for the elusive first goal with the same desire as NCF. The Galaxy’s defence was now being tested and at times faced reluctant pressure.

The all important midfield battle was being won by the Predators and it was due to excellent defence from our back line as well as some finger tip saves from goal keeper Josh Bardon that kept us from conceding. Worth mention was Joe Pettits first game for the squad and his solid performance as a central defender, winning ball and distributing well.

The pendulum slowly swung back to the Galaxy and again and the boys pushed forward again for the winner.

With the shoe now on the other foot and the Predators defending hard, Aaron Wolfe put his pace to good use again to get the ball into the box and around his defender. A rash tackle to try and slow him down led to the foul, and a penalty was awarded.

Sean Butt stepped in and placed the ball hard and low into the back corner of the net for a valuable goal.

The Galaxy in the lead but the Predators not yet beaten and the game was still being played end to end. Both sides created further chances but the clock relentlessly gnawed away at the time and at the whistle it was the Galaxy who triumphed.

This was a high calibre performance by both teams, enjoyed by all who watched. NCF deserved the win and worked hard for the points as at the end of the day they had created more chances and defended better than the opposition.

The other winner was the game itself that provided a great spectacle and showcased the abilities of both squads.

- Report by Trevor Martin

14/15s Boys: Northern Inland 2 NCF 2
North Coast Football under 14/15’s Dynamo’s played a much improved game against a tough Northern Inland team today in Taree. Firstly I must thank Trevor for the use of several willing players who were eager to please and show comradely to their younger team mates.

Again we set goals during our training sessions for the boys to work on during this game. One of those was to work hard on zone defending and winning the ball from more from the front and the midfield. As opposed to letting the opposition keep possession and just having the backs and keeper defend. I believe the boys achieved this today and we were able to keep the ball a bit longer each time we won it back. This lead directly to some great runs in play and proved to the boys that by working hard we can keep possession and land the ball in the back of the net, in this case twice before half time.

I must give credit to Northern for a gutsy second half performance with no subs, their boys did well under the conditions and fought themselves back into the second half and evened up the score. However, that’s all our lads let them get away with, they dug in and worked hard enough to share the points this week which is a massive effort of which I am very proud. I believe that we continue to improve and grow as a team and I commend the boys for their efforts and encourage them to work hard, stay focused and enjoy the competition.

In closing thanks to all the mothers who gave up their day again for their boys.

- Report by Joe Grant

13s Boys: NCF Dynamos v NCF Galaxy
Barnier Park

Round 6 saw NCF Galaxy travel to Junction Hill to play the NCF Dynamos at home.

A dry pitch, 22 degrees and a slight north westerly greeted the team at Barnier Park.

A repeat of last weeks starting 11 took to the field for kick off. The first 5 minutes of play could only be described as ‘slow motion’. The call went out to the players to move the ball a lot quicker. The mid fielders were not providing options and they appeared to be getting in one another’s way.

Ten minutes into the game saw Adjikou, well placed out from goal. His first touch bounced straight off a Dynamo defender, he regained possession and managed to produce a goal. There was one word used from the bench describing the play and that was ‘lucky’!

15 minutes into the game saw the mid fielders substituted. The fresh three were given instructions to ‘open up the play’ and provide ‘good’ positional options.

Passing of the ball started to become quicker and options were being presented. Looking to receive the ball from a throw in, Bender had the ball in his sights, he looked up, found an unmarked player and after taking possession of the ball from the throw in, played the ball on the angle to Adjikou who once again found the back of the net.

There was great play and passing of the ball down the line but it was evident the mid fielders needed to press more and all players needed to be looking forward for more options. At times players were ‘giving balls away’ whilst running and ‘playing too many square balls’.

The whistle was blown signaling half time. Unfortunately, 5 minutes too early as the official was unaware 35 minute halves were to be played.

Following the half time talk players returned to the field and bench fully aware that at times they were playing well, but better positioning was still needed, options had to be provided, less square balls needed to be played and quicker movement of the ball was necessary. Most importantly they needed to look up before receiving the ball and the game was not about the score but more about how they played the game.

During the second half the Dynamos scored their first and only goal through poor defensive play by Galaxy. It was only the second time these two teams had played one another this year, but it was evident the Dynamos had considerably improved their game.

The second half also saw Galaxy score another two goals. Whilst there were glimpses of great technical play, the team will go into training this week in the lead up to next week’s match knowing that quicker ball movement, looking forward and consistency as a team will be of high importance for the full 70 minutes of football.

Final score – Galaxy 5 Dynamos 1

Goals to: K Adjikou (3) & R Bender (2)

- Report by Angela Short

CCUFC Lions 4 Northern Storm Thunder 1
Coffs City United Lions silenced the Northern Storms Thunder four goals to one in perfect weather
conditions on Sunday afternoon in their round five clash of North Coast Footballs Premiere League at The Den.
The Storm began the match confident they could damage the premiers reputation after taking the
Lions to penalties in their State League encounter in April. The visitors challenged the champions for
the first 15 minutes before the Lions midfielders Aaron Allsop, Scott Goddard and Alex Douglas began to
take charge.

At nil all with five minutes remaining in the first half the Lions struck after young striker Chris Dooley finished off a clever passing interchange with Nathan Silvy, one nil the Lions. The northerners were then thunderstruck after the Lions second goal a minute before half time. The home side turned defence into attack when centre back Mike Swarbrick fed debutante Douglas out wide on the right flank, he roared down the sideline and delivered a pin point cross to Silvy who's deft first touch and crisp shot doubled their advantage at the break.

Soon after the restart the Storm were back in the match when Riley Dillon broke down the strong Lions
defence scoring a neat goal and putting his team in striking distance of the premiers. Within minutes
the Lions restored their two goal advantage with Dooley scoring his second after a strong individual raid on the thunders goal. The home team stepped up a notch and began to attack at will which unsettled the visitors into making desperate and dangerous tackles resulting in a red card for their captain Brendan Myeres for lunging at and striking Sam Mackay with an elbow. The Storm eventually conceded a
penalty which was duly despatched into the back of the net by Mackay.

Lions coach Mike Smith was pleased with his teams performance especially that of his young midfielders
all of who are all under 21 years of age. This week United travel to Junction Hill for a catch up match with Westlawn Tigers on Wednesday night then meet the Coffs Coast Tigers at home on Sunday.

- Report by Noel Goodworth

Woolgoolga Wolves 1 Sawtell Scorpions 1

Summer like conditions greeted Sawtell as they travelled to High St in a battle of the satellite suburbs. In Youth/Reserves Sawtell started with 10 players and Woolgoolga welcomed the return of Harmeet after a three year absence. It wasn’t long till Woolgoolga opened their account with goals to Lester Murray (2), a deft penalty to Lachie Arthur, Brad ? and yet another to the ageless Coster. Leaving 6 in the positive for Woolgoolga and a late penalty calmly slotted by Sawtells’ Mick Healey for a 6 -1 result.

First grade opened with grit and bustle and in a see sawing arm wrestle neither side failed to take any real ascendency with Sawtells’ maestro Gary Phillips steering the side around the park though not making any real inroads against a fortress like Woolgoolga back four. Midway through the first half Sawtells Ben Jensen clinically finished a parried save from Woolgoolga’s keeper Alex Byrnes for an early lead and five minutes later Byrnes was again in the thick of the action saving a Sawtell penalty low to the right post. Woolgoolga quickly rallied and a full blown assault on the Sawtell goal saw a volley of short range shots saved by the Sawtell keeper who was doing his best to channel his inner spirit of Jackie Chan.

Sawtell one up at half time and both teams again came out with measured aggression questioning each other’s defences. A corner taken by Woolgoolga’s Jimmy Palmer evaded the Sawtell defenders heads and found an un-marked Benny Hill on the back post who volleyed in a good finish. More of the same followed with the young Sawtell forwards speed and athleticism matched evenly by good defence and solid midfield play was the order of the day for both teams. In a game where both teams may have been disappointed not to take home the three points, one each seemed fitting as there was an equal number of chances and a combination of the conditions and the ferocity of the game saw both teams equally spent. In what was a thoroughly engrossing 90 minute encounter it could be sensed that both coaches felt their respective sides weren't at their absolute best on the day.

- Report by Wally Watkin

Photo: Urunga's Jaxen Heward

Raider’s Coach Tom Campbell’s dream of an entirely red headed team took a step toward fruition last weekend with the return of the ‘red fox’ aka Arlen Horton to the Raiders 1st grade lineup. He joins brother rangers Grant Homes, Tanjil Everett, Jacob Hughes and tinge ranger Adam Marks.

It was mother’s day and round 5 of the North Coast Premier League Football Competition the Raiders v Grafton Tigers, the Cabbage Patch looked a picture under azure skies, zephyrs of warm breeze cooling the crowd and the players as veteran and well respected referee Phil Payne looking resplendent in his periwinkle blue tunic released the sides on the stroke of 2pm.

After the initial hectic opening forays it was evident that the Tigers were a transformed side to that of 2011. They had a purpose and direction to their play well beyond that of last year. Brand Cavanagh-Nesa working well with Tim White providing a good test for the Raiders back three which included for the first time Paul Pomroy at central back. It all went pear shaped early though after the Tiger’s low corner found a Raider hand resulting a penalty converted by Daniel Usher to once again put the maroon and whites on the back foot early in the match.

Usher’s strike had an adrenaline like effect on the Tigers and their at times overenthusiastic defending producing a couple of yellow cards as they pressed for a second goal only to be denied by solid defending from the Adam ‘blonde Bieber’ Marks, Jaxen Heward and Pomroy. As the half played out the Raiders steadied producing good ball and body movement across the park.
The strike pairing of Tommy Frewen and Harry Gale looking dangerous and did produce the first goal for the home side as Jaxen ‘the mailman’ Heward swept around the right flank to collect Sam Jarrett’s deft pass. The mailman delivered a pin point flat cross for Ben Dooley to stroke home on the far post BUT off side as the lines women stood implacably on the western side flag in the horizontal position. A quiet “oh my gosh” escaped the lips of coach Campbell as the only cloud in the sky completely obscured the sun.

The match was gradually turning the Raider’s way though like the ripples of an incoming tide they were releasing too many shots on goal too pressure. They’d been bashed in last week’s ‘red mist’ adventure at Toormina, but not today. Harry Gale flashed a header over the cross bar on 33 minutes then going one better 5 minutes later meeting Robbie Marshall’s cross to nod in the Raider’s first as the sun finally reappeared sending the sides to the break 1-1.

Photo: Urunga's Ben Dooley

The tide was in full flow when Ben Dooley punched in his header to advance the score to 2-1. It was only 12 minutes into the second stanza and Squirrel Jarrett found some room on the right flank, boned one diving defender and looped in a cross that Dooley nodded home with pin point accuracy.

The Tigers were working hard now bolstered by the belief in their hard work ethic. It had worked in previous rounds, wins over the Storm and Coffs Tigers based on a never say die attitude, mmm no thoughts of heading back up the highway yet. Usher bouncing one header off the Raiders crossbar - close but it was the maroon and whites day. At the top of the tide a Ben Dooley corner met Paul Pomroy’s right foot, the back of the net and undoubtedly the sockdolager (final blow or statement .. haha!) of the afternoon 12 minutes from time. So a 3-1 win for the home side who now look north and the prospect of a game v second placed Storm on Sunday 20th at Korora kickoff 2pm and that should be a good one.

In other results the U/21’s 7-0 winners Nick ‘rooster’ O’Mallane in fine form knocking in 2 goals, 2 to Tanjil Everett and one each to Arlen Horton, Snowy and Bradd Danzey who also scored what he describes as an absolute snorter in O/35’s mmm DC.

- Report by Tom Campbell
2nd Report...

Last Sunday Westlawn Tigers travelled to Urunga and came away with a disappointing 3-1 loss in a game that they had the early lead but then sat back and allowed a more determined Urunga to dominate and eventually take the points.

At 7.30 tomorrow evening the Tigers take on Coffs United (first grade only) in a round 4 postponed match at Barnier Park and will have to play at their absolute best to match it with the current champions.

Last Sunday was a game where the Tigers received a penalty in the twentieth minute in a fairly even start to the game. Both sides had a few half chances and there was a determined battle for dominance in the middle of the park. As the half wore on Urunga began to get the upper hand and it paid off when the Westlawn defence tried to play out from the back and were stripped of possession and Urunga struck to have the teams going to the break at 1-1.

The second half was always going to be a tough encounter and the team to show the most enthusiasm and desire would be favoured to take the points. Westlawn went on the attack immediately after the break and had the Urunga defence under pressure. Unfortunately they couldn’t sustain this pressure and Urunga took the initiative and once again after a poor attempt by the Tigers to switch the play as the ball was cut out and the Raiders attacked down the right crossed the ball and an uncontested header saw them go up 2-1.

The Tigers in an attempt to get back into the game tried to attack and with twenty minutes to go leaked a third goal. The last quarter of the game saw the Tigers trying to get the goal to kick start a comeback but the resolute Raiders defence would have nothing of it.

The game ended with the Raiders retaining the lead in what was a sound overall display and they deserved the three points on the day. The Tigers will have to learn from their performance, lick their wounds and prepare for Wednesday nights encounter.

With Coffs United defeating Northern Storm on the weekend the NCF champions will be keen to take the points from a Tigers team that appears to have stalled a bit after a sound start to the season. This will be an entertaining match well worth braving the chilly conditions to cheer on the local team in the North Coast Football first division.

- Report by Westlawn sideline eye

Photo: Urunga Raiders v Corindi Red Rock Breakers

With a majority of players being away for the weekend, the Corindi reserves doubled up for first having a bare ten players affected the final results of the game. However, this did not stop the field communication from both teams flowing easily which resulted in positive play during the first half. Raider’s structure continued to allow the ball to work for them and at times found the ball moving at too fast of a pace to allow shots on target. Corindi were committed to make this game no easy task for the Raiders and defended gallantly.

The only point on the board during the first half came from Raiders Breanna Martin after receiving the ball from the centre play.

During the second half the Raiders lived up to their reputation of coming back stronger with a pass from Gabby Bastick to Breanna Martin in the centre to take a successful chip over the Corindi’s keeper’s head. With Corindi’s defence working hard, the referee had given a corner to the Raiders which was taken by Crystal Halverson who landed the ball into a mix of centre players with Hannah Taylor taking the net. It was not long after for Tara Archibald to add to the Raiders score with a hard low ball, drawing the Corindi keeper out to defend in a one on one situation after receiving a cross from Crystal Halverson. Breanna Martin had taken the game’s final result of Raiders 5 – 0 with a great play built up from the mid field.

Photo: Urunga Raiders v Corindi Red Rock Breakers
Reserve Grade

The first half had seen the Raiders placing pressure on the Corindi defence and net having many shots on goal, however with many shots going straight to the Corindi keeper or wide the raiders were tending to rush their shots.

It had taken approximately 30 minutes into the first half before the successful goal was taken by the Corindi Breakers; with Corindi taking the advantage when two Raiders collided due to lack of communication on the ball and with Corindi intercepting the ball and placing the first goal on the board. Raiders then fought back not wanting to go to half time with no points on the board. Raiders allowing the ball to move and let it to work for itself paid off with a successful shot coming across the field, being passed between Donna Navin, Marijke Verschuuren with the ball finding the feet of Hannah Rees to take the shot.

During the second half the Raiders come out strong with Hannah Rees taking her second shot, finding the target at the near post. Corindi then saw the opportunity to take the ball to their end and amongst tackle to set up for the shot, the Raiders backline defence cleared the ball to striker Kelly Archibald who found the far post taking the Raiders to 3 – 1.
The Raiders still having a high percentage of procession then seen Hannah Rees passing to unmarked Raider, Hannah Taylor at the far post, the ball going across the goal mouth had brought the Corindi keeper off the mark for Hannah Taylor to have success. Raiders fifth shot had come from a two pass situation with a free kick out wide which found the feet of Hannah Taylor to have her second successful goal for the game.

Corindi’s, Ally Ray found a break in the Raiders defence taking the ball and shooting on target, drawing the Raiders keeper Shelby Mackenzie out to defend the low ball with triumph. Raider’s striker Kelly Archibald scored the final goal of the game to seal the score board 6 – 1 with great build up of feet to feet passing coming from the wing.

- Report by Judy Archibald

Woolgoolga Wildcats 4 Sawtell Scorpions 0
Both Sawtell Scorpions and the Woolgoolga Wildcats showed a strong defensive back throughout the game, however, Woolgoolga dominated possession for the majority of the match, resulting in a 4 to 0 victory to the Wildcats.

There were some great runs by Jessie Gentle up the wing, which kept the Sawtell defence on their toes. After the Wildcats’ determined attempts at goal being thwarted by the Sawtell goalie, one finally bounced off the cross bar and just inside the goal area. It was awarded after confirmation with the linesman. The first goal was scored by Ashli Deane.

This was soon followed by a second goal for Deane after converting a penalty due to a hand ball inside the box. The Wildcats continued to push forward. In another strong attempt, Janice Lacy slammed a shot into the crossbar, which bounced off, only to be knocked in by Jodie Cooper after rushing it from outside the box.

Team keeper, Georgia Allen, took to the field as striker in the latter part of the game. Photo: Souths Gunner Sirens Ashly Cambell

The Souths Gunner Sirens womens soccer team made the short trip across town to play Westlawn Tigers in their round five clash on Saturday. The Sirens won the local derby 1-0.

The Sirens wasted little time in scoring the winning gaol, in fact the game was only in its second minute when Lisa Linnetson dribbled the ball towards gaol from the right front corner of the penalty box, the Tigers keeper left a fraction too much room at her near post and was easily beaten by the shot.

A hand ball by Westlawn resulted in a spot penalty being awarded to the Sirens. However for the second
week in a row the attempt was unsuccessful, with the Tigers keeper picking the correct direction and
turning the ball wide.

Westlawn were keeping the Sirens on their toes with some counterattacking runs but were inevitably
thwarted by some dogged defending, they were unable to draw a save from the Sirens keeper all game.

Photo: Jo Powell blocks a shot from Keana Scholes

The second half was for the greater part controlled by the sirens, but still they failed to put their rivals to the sword. A combination of poor finishing when there was only the keeper to beat, hitting the frame work and some good saves saw the match remain at 1-0.

Although pleased with the win, the Sirens can ill afford to squander so much possession and so many
chances in future games. Gillian Rae is revelling in her first year of senior football, Jo Powell controlled the game from the back and Naomi Jenkins was excellent up front.

- Report by Brett Collison

1st Div Men / Women Match Preview

1st Div Men

Westlawn tackle Raiders

Westlawn Tigers travel to Urunga tomorrow to tackle Urunga Raiders in what should be a very tight affair. The Raiders coming off a loss to Sawtell last week and the Tigers went down to Lismore Workers in the State Cup to the tune of 3-0 at Lismore.

Last week the Tigers failed to come to terms with a bumpy surface and found it very hard to retain possession against a very well organized Lismore outfit. There were periods in the game where Westlawn matched their opposition but they couldn’t sustain any real pressure on them.

Sunday sees the start of a big week for the Tigers as they will also play a postponed match against Coffs United on Wednesday night at Barnier Park and then will be at home to Woolgoolga next Saturday. Playing midweek can be difficult but it’s much better than playing two games on a weekend.

Urunga have had a mixed bag so far this season with a win and a couple of close losses and Westlawn have played three games for two wins and a narrow loss. There is not much to split these teams and the bounce of the ball or a slice of luck could decide the outcome.

Westlawn will need to find their possession and passing game on the tight Urunga pitch. The Raiders usually play a physical brand of football and the Tigers will have to match them across the park.

This game will be won and lost in the midfield and the return of Westlawn’s Zac Mawhinney will give a more balanced look to the lineup. With no injuries the coaching staff have a full squad to select from which is a positive for the club as there is plenty of competition now for all starting positions.

Westlawn have had a steady start to the season and playing three games in a week will be a real test for the young Grafton team and they should relish the opportunity. Team captain Aiden Cavanagh-Nesa said. “Playing football is what it’s all about, the more games we can play the better. There is a good feel about the club this year and we want to do well.”

“Last week we were disappointed to lose and get knocked out of the State Cup, we were unhappy with our performance but things were really positive at training this week and we want to get back into the winners circle. This will be a tough game as it always is down there, it should be a great game.”

For the longest road trip of the season the bus will leave the Crown Hotel Sunday at 9.30am sharp for a 12.00 kick-off for youth/reserves and 2pm for First Grade. Have an enjoyable mother’s day.

- Preview by Westlawn Sideline Eye

16 Girls FMNC South v NCF
North Coast girls faced off against Mid North Coast Jaguars and came out with a 1-1 draw.

From the kick off Mid North Coast put pressure on NCF and forced them to continually clear the ball from the back. With this constant pressure, the backline of Hope, Hannah, Gabby and Sarah stopped many threatening raids, until Mid North Coast managed to take advantage and chip a goal pass Georgia the NCF keeper.

This spurred the girls into action and from the kick off NCF finally started to play their game, making the ball do the work and passing the ball all around Mid North Coast. By stringing many passes together Sam Barker placed a perfect ball past the Mid North Coast’s defence for Brontie Barrera to strike it pass their goal keeper, putting the score 1-1 at half time.

In the second half NCF kept continual pressure on Mid North Coast, spending majority of the second half in their half of the field. This was due to the fantastic efforts by Sarah Vidler, Emma Campbell and Sam Barker passing the ball around in the mid-field opening up many chances for NCF to score, but with many close shots from Lillie Moye, Sarah Vidler and Sam Barker but unfortunately couldn’t get the ball in the net.

With NCF tiring late in the second half Mid North Coast took full advantage to pass NCF’s defence and put on a shot that everyone thought was going in. But new goalie Laura Young pulled off two brilliant saves to keep NCF in the game.

Also big congratulations to Mid North Coast Jaguars for playing a hard game and never giving NCF a chance to rest.

Well done to NCF for keeping your heads up throughout the game, especially Hope Eadie and Hannah Taylor working well together in defence with Hope using her speed to stop Mid North Coast for getting any opportunities to score and Hannah giving plenty of options to pass the ball to. Also Georgia Allen playing a good game in goals in the first half then having a good run on the field in the second half.

Overall it was a good game from NCF raising the intensity and stringing passes together for a good team effort.

- Report by Gabby Bastick

Two weeks ago the boys had played a strong and dominant game at Port Macquarie, and all were hoping for more of the same this week.

The visitors of course had other plans and from the first whistle indicated their intent. They were pressing hard when not in possession to put us under pressure and to their credit made the first 10 minutes difficult for the home team. NCF worked equally hard and with determination, but the resulting play was a little rushed and lacked design.

As time went on though, the tempo slowed a little and the boys were able to push the ball around with more composure. Wide runners on both flanks were finding room in the channels and created many opportunities to attack. Nick Ranieri and Aiden Whish-Wilson, as overlapping fullbacks often got forward running into the spaces out wide and are showing confidence joining in to the attack.

Photo: Eddie Neaves plays a neat move to beat the ref.

Our first goal came after just such a wide play was scrambled over the line for a corner kick on the left. Aiden Whish-Wilson took the corner, playing to the near post where Eddie Neaves snuck in and deflected the ball past the keeper.

FMNC continued to play hard and the game was still a real tussle, particularly in the middle of the park, but the main threat for us was once again being caught on the break. Tyh Murphy played solidly in the central defence to make sure that would not happen, dropping in as a sweeper as required and tidying up whenever a threat was perceived.

Another player who was finding opportunities out wide was Aaron Wolfe. Playing as a left field striker it was he who secured the next goal for the team. After receiving a ball out of the midfield he used his pace to beat two FMNC defenders and then finished well with a shot to the far post.

By half time NCF was 2 up.

Photo: Trent Stack and Max Peltonen combine to find a way through a congested midfield, while Eddie Neaves looks on

With the sun sitting low on the horizon the boys took to the field for the second half. If we continued to play our style of football, and not get caught up in the scrapping game that FMNC were playing (to good effect I should add), we should get the result.

The boys did just that, fighting hard when necessary, but pushing the ball around when possible and as a result were never really seriously threatened throughout the game. Many more chances came our way and once again I have to say, if we had finished all our chances we could have had a few more. We did pick up a third, this time attacking centrally, via Sean Butt who received the ball just inside the box after a bit of FMNC scrambling defence, and managed to make space enough to poke the ball into the back of the net.

Those who came close, Trent Stack, Max Peltonen, Harry Atherton and Jack Vandermaat. All in all, another game where the boys did enough to dominate and take the points and we are just where we want to be.

- Report by Trevor Martin

14/15s Boys NCF v FMNC Jets

North Coast Football under 14/15’s Dynamo’s played the Mid North Coast Jets under warm conditions at Polwarth Drive for round five of the fixture. Firstly I would like to start by thanking Trevor and two of his players for their efforts today, they jelled well and we miss them, lookout!

The boys started well achieving one of our small goals we set this week which was to work hard from the first whistle and we were a little unlucky early not to go one up with some good pressure on the Jets. We gave ourselves good opportunities by playing to feet and moving the ball quicker than in previous games. However, we were unable to convert this encouraging play into points.

I will not go into too much detail right now about this game except for the clear improvement both physically and mentally of the team under what has not been a great start to the season. We definitely have lots to work on and I feel very positive about this group of boys achieving our goal of becoming a skilful team rather than a team of skilful players.

Lastly I would like to give a clear instruction of commitment to NCF and our team so please use club as a training run and to have fun. Get well soon Clayton.

- Report by Joe Grant

13s Boys FMNC South v NCF

Photo: North Coast’s Lachlan Burt delivers the ball through for another raid on the Mid North Coast (south) goal.

The supermoon had not long set, before the dawning of a beautiful Autumn day. Players, officials and parents were the beneficiaries of a warm, sunny day and a beautifully prepared playing surface and clean facilities. To top everything off, FMNC had BBQ sausages and steaks sizzling away for anyone seeking a snack or two.

Game two for the day featured the NCF Galaxy v FMNC Jaguars. NCF sent out their trusted back four, a new-look centre grouping and front three eager to put the ball in the back of FMNC goal. All-up, six players new to the team this year and rapidly learning the FFA inspired and coach Linsley driven game.

The centre three (Skinner, Cooke & Cosic) worked well together, particularly in defence. Quicker ball movement would have been the icing on the cake, but they still dominated their opposition. These three were reliably supported by a well-tuned back four, lead by Captain Brewster.

Early in the first half, opportunities to get the ball into scoring positions were hampered by poor positioning, turning on the ball at inappropriate times and dribbling the ball without knowing where the player was heading or where any team mates were, when an early and simple back pass would have presented the team with better options.

Then something amazing happened: Jenkins received the ball near the left side-line and just over half-way, he called Onley for an overlap whilst holding the opposition mesmerised with his footwork. As Onley ran past he deftly passed the ball forward and Onley received the ball twenty metres down-field in space…. a perfect example of a well-practised training drill and wildly cheered by all on the bench.

Photo: NCF U13 Galaxy v FMNC Jaguars
At the fifteen minute mark, it was time for Linsley to spread the workload and on came Dillon, Burt and Bender. Play restarted from a corner and with his first touch of the game, Dillon headed an Onley special into the FMNC goal.

It didn’t take long for the experience of the refreshed line-up to show the benefit of their time under the coaching of Linsley. Bender & Burt worked well up front to close-down the opposition and with the midfield (lead by Dillon playing his A-game) really playing well, the team lifted.

Davis was getting down the right wing well and the backs looked comfortable whenever pressed. Coach Linsley commented to those on the bench that Burt was providing an excellent illustration of playing as a 9 through his movement off the ball, coming back to receive the ball, laying off and going again. All this was followed by another excellent passage of play down the left, Jenkins cut the ball back to Dillon who was in space and 24 metres from goal. An excellent first touch forward and up came his head, then with great poise he stuck the ball sweetly into the top right corner. Two nil and looking comfortable.

Then it happened again, another training ground move, only this time the players instigated the movement without direction from Linsley. Shugg received the ball, called Onley around and after holding the ball up (to give Onley time to run forward) passed back and in-field to Dillon who first touch passed the ball into space up the line for Onley to sprint onto. A perfect execution of third man running and if taped would make an excellent presentation to any group of players.

Half time and a chance for all to hear of their fine play and wisdom on what to do in the second half.

Photo: NCF U13 Galaxy v FMNC Jaguars

Back on the field and with Bender looking like a pin ball as he bounced off players and Davis smashing the centre-mid from FMNC, it is difficult to see how they can be related!!

Salmon saved and distributed the ball well all game, although he will be thanking Stocks for his goal saving header off the line. Great vision by Stocks to be alert to the danger and get into position to save the shot.

Excellent football was again being played, with Linsley counting five passes through the mid-field resulting in a shot on goal by Petrie. Adjikou was back on the field, moving, passing back and moving again, which was great to witness.

After further constructive play, where the ball moved from Brewster at back right, through Burt in mid-field and onto Jenkins, a shot by Jenkins was deflected out for a corner. From the corner, Jenkins pounced on the loose ball and struck a bullet-like shot into a ballooning net. Three nil at the 50th minute.

Cosic and Adjikou finished the game with style. Cosic pulled a high ball down with a delicate first touch and turned into space to create a scoring opportunity for Adjikou. Unfortunately, his well struck shot rebounded off the upright.

Final score 3-0 and with some very favourable comments on their performance from FMNC coach, the players should be very proud of their efforts.

- Report by Warren Burt

12 Boys: NCF Galaxy 4 MNC Jaguars 1
Congratulations to the 12 Boys Galaxy on a strong 4-1 win over Mid North Coast Football Jaguars this Sunday. It was great to get a game on a fine autumn’s day after the recent bad weather and the disappointment of last weekend’s ground closures.

Thankfully there were no ill effects from the week off other than a slightly nervous start in which we attempted to force the run of play. Once the nerves settled the boy’s picked up where they left off in round two and showed patience in playing out and building the attack.

A special mention goes to Danny O’Connor for a first class effort in goal. Danny was always well positioned to save the Jaguars attack, played out effectively, and was a vocal leader for the defensive line.

NCF Goal scorers were Alexander Sheargold: 2, and Hayden Purkiss: 2, with goal assists to Boston Phillips.

- Report by Rod Purkiss

(wet weather catch-up)

Sawtell Scorpions 3 Urunga Raiders 2

Photo: While Urunga is still discussing how to set its wall, Sawtell’s Matt Parkins chips the ball into the net to give the Scorpions the early lead.
The Raiders early season enforced wet weather/bye hiatus showed on the weekend going down 3-2 to an enthusiastic Ian Glover coached Sawtell Scorpions outfit. Yes the ‘Glover’ is back giving the Scorpions both left and right ventricle that they so sorely missed last season.

The Raiders through the first half looked the goods in parts albeit a bit rusty with good ball movement with and without the ball but an early free kick saw them 1 down after 4 minutes. The clever Scorpions made the best of a free kick awarded just outside the Raiders penalty area. Having spied the Raiders having a full committee meeting about the placement of the wall, Sawtell’s Matt Parkins stepped up and casually slapped a shot at an open goal and I do mean open. The Raider’s protests and offering of the committee minutes went largely unheeded by centre referee Mr Nigel Hayes as he directed the visitors to restart play. Nice piece of improvisation if you ask me by the green and whites and quick thinking by Parkins, but it was the Raiders who applied most of the pressure throughout the remainder of the first half.

The return of Kale Hopper from the flesh pots of Asia and Adam Marks from a recent Cleo mag. photo shoot gave the Raiders a more complete look as they scrapped for an equalizer. They were rewarded on 27minutes after some excellent passing down the left flank saw Tommy Frewen chip a ball for Ben Dooley to thread through the Sawtell defence for Harry Gale to charge onto, however his run was terminated by an overly committed tackle from Jordan Hayes. Mr Hayes (referee) briefly conferred with Miss Hayes (linesperson) and pointed to the spot, Jaxen ‘the mailman’ Heward slotted the penalty to restore parity and go along way to ease the earlier embarrassment.

The Scorpions went to the break with a goal advantage though after Angus Glover thumped a shot at Raiders keeper Jake Tarrant from the top of the box, Tarrant somewhat unsighted did well to stop Glover’s strike but could not stop the next shot from James Dawson to send the sides to the sheds with the Scorpions 2-1 leaders.

At the break coach Campbell impressed on the Raiders the need for a disciplined united effort, yes wise words indeed and probably spoken in many a dressing shed last weekend. Well I can report that the message was lost in translation as the Raiders racked up free kick after free kick and not long after card after card 6 yellow and 2 red to be exact with Frankie La Spada and Chainsaw Simmonds accepting the offer of an early shower mmm. It detracted from the football which as the second half played out was more than absorbing, raids by both sides tested the goal keeping of Tarrant and Xavier Taylor.

Tarrant pulling out a brilliant save from a Ben Gentle shot - as Tarrant dived one way hung his lefthand out the other way denying the certain goal. Tarrant was again tested midway through the second half after linesperson Hayes flagged for a hand ball that was largely missed by most of the crowd. Yes after conferring with referee Hayes a penalty was awarded. Gentle’s first attempt saved by Tarrant who now had his cat suit on, but lines person Hayes again flagged an indiscretion, that of Tarrant being too ‘catlike’ forcing a retaking of the shot and this time Gentle found the net 3-1 for the home side and they looked like having the points in the bag but not just yet.

Shortly after the restart Sam Sawtell took exception to something - presumably to the news of Adam Marks’ new modeling contract, Sawtell (Sam) lashed out at Marks kicking him in the back of the leg (probably not the first time that Marks has been attacked from behind judging from his immediate reaction) thereby igniting a football brew-har, you know push shove but not the face. Frankie La Spada managed to gain his second yellow in said brew-har and was sent off alongside Sam Sawtell. Cards were being issued now like speeding tickets at the Bathurst 500. Chainsaw Simmonds exited after a 35minute second half cameo after being shown two yellows.

The football largely suffered and as the clock wound down the Raiders were able to pull a goal back via Robbie Marshall’s right foot but not enough to stop the Scorpions running out 3-2 winners.

A better story for the U/21’s though after conceding two early goals the Raiders pulled together and got home 3-2 Sinai Shaul scoring the winner after dribbling through the entire Sawtell side, two spectators and a black dog before releasing from the top of the box - goals also to Tanjil ‘red fox’ Everett and the Chizzbon. The 1st grade women 2-1 winners goals to Brianna Martin and Shelby. The boys U/17 were all class in their 4-1 romp over Boambee Bombers.

The Raiders will be at home this weekend when they take on Grafton Westlawn Tigers on Mothers Day - kickoffs at 12 and 2, so make sure you bring your mum along or any mother for that matter!, see you on the hill.

- Report by Tom Campbell

Photo: Casey Rowles

The Souths Gunners Sirens travelled to York St Oval for their womens 2nd division soccer match against the Northern Storm on Saturday. With the continual wet weather of late it was only the second game of the year for the Sirens. Although they were 2-0 winners on the day, they were far from the standard that their capable of.

Sirens won the toss and elected to run with a slight breeze at their backs. With the assistance of the wind and some poor clearances’ they were able to exert some early pressure on the Storm. At the 13th minute mark Mel Bender capitalised on a good ball from Lisa Linnetson from the right flank and duly placed the ball into the goal for a 1-0 lead.

Photo: Kieran Shanley and Jo Powell

Despite maintaining the majority of possession the Sirens were unable to add to their lead for the rest of the half. They were awarded a penalty for a hand ball in the Storm box but were not able to convert it. Although they often worked their way into good attacking positions they were unable to take full advantage.

The second half saw the Sirens come out and really start to string their passing game together. The Storm did manage to ask some questions of the Sirens defence but rarely tested the keeper.

Naomi Jenkins ran the ball deep into the left hand side of the Storms penalty area and deftly cut it back to Linnetson who beat the keeper to make it 2-0.

For the Sirens Kelsey Pitken caused the opposition headaches all day, Casey Rowles had a strong game in defence and Kayla Worthing is starting to look at home at centre midfield.

- Report by Brett Collison

Lions continue to roar

COFFS United have earned its spot in the quarter finals stage of the Northern New South Wales Football State Cup with a 3-0 win over Port Macquarie FC at Tuffin's Lane. Going into the match without a number of senior players, the lions displayed its trademark big match form to claim a comprehensive victory.

Despite going into half time locked at 0-0, Coffs United found a break though early in the second stanza courtesy of Chris Dooley and didn't look back with Nathan Silvy and Aaron Allsop ensuring the win for the Lions.

Lions coach Mike Smith was impressed with the way his side took control of the game when the pressure was on. "It was 50-50 for the majority of the first half and we did well to turn our time on the ball into goals when we came back out after the break," Smith said.

"The surface wasn't the best and it took a while to get used to but when we did the boys were able to play the ball around well. "We didn't have many options up front due to injury and suspension but those that filled in did a great job."

Smith praised the Performance of glove man Josh Wiseman who maintained yet another clean sheet. "Josh was impressive in goals today and had a really good game," he said. "Port looked to move the ball around but we were able to shut them down before they could create any legitimate chances on goal."

The Lions next state cup match will be at BCU International Stadium on July 14/15.

- Report by Nick Houghton, courtesy of

Earlier info...

Below is the round 2 draw for the Northern NSW State Cup which will be conducted tomorrow (Saturday May 5th) at two centres: Port Macquarie and Weston (near Cessnock).

The draw for matches being played at Port Macquarie is as follows:

2.00pm
Great Lakes United FC vs Oxley Vale Attunga FC

3.30pm
Port Macquarie FC vs Coffs City United FC

The draw for matches being played at Weston is as follows:

2.00pm
Goonellabah FC vs Alstonville & District FC

3.30pm
Lismore Workers FC vs Westlawn Tigers FC

The winners of these four matches will go through to the finals of the competition where they are guaranteed some of the $10,000 prize money on offer. The finals series will be played on July 14-15.
Preview: Westlawn Tigers v Lismore Workers
Westlawn Tigers take on Lismore Workers in the second round of the Northern NSW State Cup at Western Park Goonellabah at 2pm Saturday.

The Tigers were washed out last Saturday against Coffs Harbour and have had training severely restricted due to recent weather conditions. This weekend was set aside for any postponed matches in the early part of the season but has had round two of the State Cup scheduled. It will once again give the Tigers a great opportunity to test themselves against opposition from a different zone.

Last week’s postponement has allowed a few players with niggling injuries to gain full fitness, the only unavailable player is inform midfielder Zac Mawhinny so the coaching staff have all but everyone available for selection.

Having won their last two league outings the players are keen to progress further in the knock-out competition. Last year they progressed to the third round and are hoping to equal that or go one better and get into the prize money.

Lismore Workers showed in round 1 at Barnier Park that they are a very well drilled football side and play an expansive attacking style of game based on controlling possession. They defeated Coffs Coast Tigers 4-1 in round 1 and it was an emphatic win against an outfit that Westlawn defeated 1-0 in April.

Westlawn coach Robert Usher said. “We had an opportunity to see Workers earlier in the competition and they were impressive. We will need to be on our game right from the start as they are one of the strongest clubs in their league and are a proud club with a long history in the game in Northern Rivers football.”

He went on to say. “We have been in good form but with the disrupted season so far we need to build on our last two good performances and work hard. There will be a few minor changes in our structure and these games often give fringe players an opportunity to state their case for a regular start.”

This will be great preparation for next weekend’s mother’s day trip to take on last seasons finalists Urunga. With postponements and a bye in the competition no one team has dominated which makes for a very competitive and interesting competition. A couple of poor results and a team can be left well and truly behind the pack.

- Preview by Westlawn sideline eye.

Preview: Port Macquarie v Coffs United Lions

Underdone Lions still like chances

COFFS United Lions will be venturing into the unknown in more ways than one when they take on Port Macquarie FC today in the second round of the Northern New South Wales Football State Cup.

The Reigning North Coast Football Premier League champions will go into the sudden-death match with only limited knowledge of their opposition, despite defeating them in the same round of last year's State Cup.

The Lions will be without their talismanic front man Ben Mackay, who is still serving a suspension from the first round, as well as a number of their regular starters because of injury.

While admitting his team might not have had the perfect preparation for the match, Coffs United coach Mike Smith felt his players would be able to get the job done. "To be honest with you we are a little underdone. We are missing some key players and a lack of match time in the local competition doesn't have us in the position we would like to be," Smith said.

"Because of the weather, bye weeks and the Easter break we have only played twice in five weeks, which is less than ideal. We have four senior players who aren't able to play this week, so it will give a number of the young guys in the squad a chance to perform."

Smith said despite the challenges ahead of his team the Lions were still confident of making it to the next round. "The State Cup is one of our big goals for the season," he said. "It is the chance to test yourself against the best teams in the region."

- Preview courtesy of
