Finals Results

It was a monumental day in the 2008 MBF Champion of Champions that took place on Sunday 26th October at Valentine Sports Park in what were ideal conditions for football as the heavens smiled on Glenwood.

Seen as one of the biggest spectacles Football NSW runs, 36 teams competed in 18 matches which kicked off at 8am with the Under 10’s match which Smithfield RSL ran out 3-1 winners over South Coast side Figtree while the final game kicked off at 5.30pm for the day’s major match which saw the Dunbar Rovers seal a 1-0 victory over Budgewoi with the goal coming in via the Golden Goal rule.

One of the matches of the day was seen in the Over 35’s as a number of former NSL and ex-Socceroos stars took on each other in a clash which saw 12 goals.

Castle Hill led by Alex Tobin and notable players such as Damon Langan and Jason Connolly took on West Ryde Rovers who had the likes of Francis Awaratife, Kimon Taliadoros, Chris Kalanztis and Paul Okon in their roster.

With both ex-Socceroos skippers going toe to toe, it was Castle Hill who reigned supreme and defeated the Rovers 7-5 in an emphatic match which was enjoyed by the hundreds of spectators that came down to witness this thrilling game.

Sydney FC stars Jacob Timpano, Iain Fyfe, Mike Enfield and Central Coast Mariners stars Chris Tadrosse, Matthew Nash and Ahmad Elrich were also present handing out medals to all participants on the day.

Both Coffs United teams are out of the Champion of Champions tournament after going down in semi-finals played in Sydney yesterday.

The Lionesses couldn't get a look in when trounced 8-1 by Ourimbah United while the Lions had their moments and played some glorious football before bowing out 3-2 to Budgewoi.

Stand-in women's coach Glenn Pearson said his charges had simple been out-gunned by a better side on the day. "We're disappointed to lose but you must pay credit to the winners," he said. "Ourimbah are a strong side, they played some brilliant football and we gave it everything we had but in the end... much, much too good."

Cassie Albert was the solitary goal scorer for United.

The Lions bowed out after twice hitting the outright lead, only to be outpointed and outplayed in the back end of the game. Prolific strike weapon Ben Mackay opened up a 1-0 lead that was levelled soon after. Again, Mackay goaled and the Lions were back in business at 2-1, only to have their hopes dashed when their rivals fought back.

All hopes faded when Budgewoi rattled the cage to go 3-2 up and while the Lions threw everything at the net in the final minutes, the leaders' defence held rock solid.

Match Report: Senior Men: Coffs City United 2 Normanhurst Eagles 1
MBF Champion of Champions Quarter Final

Normanhurst Eagles fresh from an 11 goal victory the previous week were now ready to play the unknown quantity, Coffs City United who were as near to full strength as they could be although still missing Nic Lambert and Peter Bayndrian from this stage of last year's competition. Nevertheless the local side was quietly confident but football is a funny game...

A typical Coffs Harbour summer day with temperatures approaching 30C and a hard green pitch would surely test both sides in this quarter final contest.

Coffs Lions were straight on the attack from the kick-off with the resultant corner kick causing little problem to the Normanhurst defenders who had a definite height advantage over their opponents. Sam MacKay used his pace out wide to beat his defender but once again the high cross was effectively dealt with by the Normanhurst defence and their answering attack quickly launched.

Following some sloppy defence by Todd Barden, Adam Goldrick fired in a powerful cross from the left hand side that Josh Wiseman could only parry into the path of a Normanhurst striker for the Sydneysiders to take a 1-0 lead. This strike certainly quietened the local crowd which had grown considerably in size since kick-off probably because of the enormous publicity attached to this game by local officials and media.

Ben MacKay led the fight back with an immediate reply but Normanhurst's A. Frost was up to the challenge and saved efficiently. Play was quickly switching from end to end with some speed and anyone suffering the effects of the conditions was easily found out. Will Bailey and Brent Turner were forced into several crunch tackles for the Lions as Normanhurst threatened to take complete control of the game in the latter stage of the half. Not to be completely overshadowed, Anthony Wiseman finished off a smart interchange with Ben MacKay only to shoot wide of the Normanhurst goal from 18 metres.

Tyson Barry followed up a few moments later when he found some space inside the penalty area but his goal bound shot was blocked by a desperate Normanhurst defender. Then Josh Wiseman was forced to save a rocket from D. Ochert and then watched in relief as the follow-up shot was blasted high over the bar from a good scoring position. The half ended with Will Bailey again called into action to save a Normanhurst raid down the right side and ensure the deficit remained at the odd goal.

Whatever Mike Smith imparted to his players in The Lions' shed at half time seemed to do the trick as the home side came out with more purpose and width to their play. Daniel Ivers replaced Rory Dollard, Miro Maco was introduced into a game that suited his style of play and Anthony Wiseman was pushed wide in an effort to release him from the high defensive load he took in the first period. Ben MacKay reversed the attention he had been attracting from the Normanhurst defence for most of the game but his tackle brought him a yellow card and a long break in play while his defender was repaired for the next encounter.

Within a few minutes Wiseman and then Nathan Silvy squandered excellent opportunities to put The Lion's on equal terms with Normanhurst but one felt a score was imminent and the large crowd was now more expectant and anxious than at any other time in the game. Ben MacKay brilliantly scythed his was through a back peddling Normanhurst defence only to see the big frame of A. Frost in the Normanhurst goal deny him yet again.

From the ensuing corner kick a Normanhurst defender handled the ball in the penalty box and just as quickly Nathan Silvy had put The Lions back on equal terms with Normanhurst; 1-1.

With the momentum clearly going with the home side and refusing to buckle to any of the Normanhurst challenges, MacKay this time combined with Anthony Wiseman who deftly beat the advancing keeper to give The Lions a 2-1 advantage. The game had changed within 5 minutes and it was Normanhurst who had to find answers or face the long trek back to Sydney wondering what was different from this game to the last game.

Coach Mike Smith made some personnel changes giving game time to Kurt Daley and re-introducing Sam MacKay and Rory Dollard to continue to probe at Normanhurst and to challenge for any loose ball and prevent any Normanhurst reply. After several near chances at both ends and a 5 minute period of injury time, Coffs Lions had once again done themselves and their supporters proud and advanced to the semi finals of the NSW MBF Champion of Champions tournament.

Local pundits agreed that Joshua Wiseman was instrumental in this victory with several goal denying saves, Tyson Barry was tireless in his central mid-field role and Will Bailey often threatened in attack and cleared up in defence to give a high quality all round performance. On such a hot day against a hard tacking and well organised opponent this was an excellent team effort and one which is sure to again raise eye-brows further south!

first Round of the MBF Champion of Champions

In blustery conditions on Sunday at Maclean Street, the 13 years Woolgoolga Waves football team ran on to the field to face the 14 years Rooty Hill squad in the MBF Champion of Champions for girls. The Champion of Champions is a sudden death knock-out competition involving the Premiers of every football zone in NSW.

North Coast Football has a 13 years girls competition, but not a 14 years, so the Waves were punching above their weight in this one as they played up a year. You wouldn't know it the way they started, however. From the kick off, Jesse Gentle dribbled through the entire Rooty Hill team and fired a shot just wide for a goal kick. Only 12 seconds had elapsed. Jesse continued to cause trouble like that all game.

From here Rooty Hill began to dominate the crucial midfield battle, slotting the ball in behind an overworked Woopi backline time and time again. Anika Morgan at sweeper kept pace with the attack however and bumped several much larger defenders off the ball at key moments. Jacqui Newland in central midfield covered acres of ground and defused plenty of raids.

The goal Rooty Hill had been searching for came midway through the first half after Jacqui Newland was judged to have deliberately handled the ball in the penalty box with the resultant penalty kick awarded.

Woolgoolga's Georgia Allen, despite being only 12, was still the tallest girl on the pitch and made herself as large an obstacle as possible. The Rooty Hill striker was allowed to begin her run up for the penalty, stop and backup before starting again, which drew howls of protest from the locals, but when she struck it, Georgia fell to her right and made the save. The ball rebounded out towards the striker who was not challenged for the ball by the Woopi defence. Again she struck the ball and again Georgia blocked the shot, but as Georgia fumbled for the ball it was third time lucky for Rooty Hill. In it went and they led the locals 1-nil.

Half time came and the Woopi girls felt like they were well in the contest with their much older rivals. The nor-easter kept up its onslaught, but this match was being played on Maclean Street's east-west pitch meaning the breeze blew across field and only slightly favoured one team, but Woopi had best use of it in the second half.

The second period was played a little differently to the first in that the Rooty Hill girls began to tire, perhaps owing to the long trip, and the Woopi girls began to find their way to the end they were attacking more regularly. On several occasions the Waves created chances which only needed a decent shot on target to even the score.

And there were a few decents shots which had the Rooty Hill defence scrambling, but nothing which found the back of the net. In fact it was Rooty Hill who had the best chance to score in the second half with the awarding of another penalty. Georgia attempted to clear the ball as it was played back to her but missed it completely. Her boot, however, did not miss the Rooty Hill striker and she went down clutching her leg as the whistle blew for the spot kick. The penalty taker, however, fluffed the kick and sent it wide of the target.

At full time the visitors from Rooty Hill had won 1-nil and deservedly so. They played the match in the right spirit and have earned the right to advance to the 2nd round.

For Woolgoolga the season is over. They must now wait for the 2009 season to kick off and hope for another shot at the Champion of Champions. At least next year they will be more experienced and matched for age with their opponents.

11 Boys: Match report/photos:

Despite the Blacktown comp having almost 50 U11 teams and an enviable reputation, Quakers Hill proved no match for the Northern Storm boys (and girl), with the home team leading 3-0 at half-time and eventually triumphing 6-1.

The win sets up a Rd 2 match against Condell Park, from the St George district comp, next Sunday.
